Reston National Golf Course
Played On 07/17/2023Getting back to how it was
I've always really liked the variety of lay out at Reston and it remains a good test suitable for all abilities. It had become very poorly maintained in recent years but its back to near its best. Teeboxes and greens were good and the fairways were lush. The greens are exceptionally slow but they run true.
Green fees are still above average but the twilight rates, particularly for walking (and it is a walkable course) are good. Can be slow but on a hot, steamy Monday in July it was pretty deserted so nobody holding up on progress - front 9 in under 2 hours for a 3 ball
Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club
Played On 05/08/2023Great Twilight rate
Expensive at normal rates but the twilight rate of $50 is great value given that at this time of year, 18 holes is easily possible from one of the first twilight tee times.
Beautiful course with lots of variety. Course condition good although greens a little bumpy given recent aeration. Back 9 is a great challenge with multiple memorable holes across the 18. Pace of play was also great when we played given that it was pretty busy.
Brambleton Regional Park Golf Course
Played On 04/11/2022Will Improve
Greens were bumpy due to aeration and sanding and some fairways were a little short of grass given start of growing season. Should be great in a month but still worth playing now.
Herndon Centennial Golf Course
Played On 03/21/2022Great conditions for March
Herndon is my go to course because of their great twilight walking rates ($30 right now with tee times available from 3.00). The course is in amazing condition given that the grass has only recently started growing. the greens are a little fluffy but great to see fully sanded bunkers in pristine condition - an all too common issue right now at the majority of courses where bunkers are just dirt and stones and collect water after rain.
Great little muni - on the short side but lots of challenging holes nevertheless
Cypress Point Country Club
Played On 09/02/2022Firm and running
Had a great value hot deal in a Friday morning. Course was dry and running on the fairways but slow and soft on the greens. Condition was good overall. Pace of play was good other than a slow down towards the back of the front 9. This course usually backs up on 16 and 17 but no such issue today. Challenging enough but generally forgiving of the odd wayward shot.
Play a couple of times a year and always enjoy.
Brambleton Regional Park Golf Course
Played On 08/24/2022Nice Layout
Good challenge with a variety of holes and length. Conditions generally good - greens slow but true and most fairways good with a couple showing wear.
Good value and friendly staff
Thank you for your positive rating! We’re thrilled to hear you had a positive experience and can't wait to have you back again sometime soon.
Chesapeake Golf Club
Played On 08/12/2020Nice Layout
Enjoyed the layout at Chesapeake which has a number of moderately challenging holes. Many of the greens were undulating which left some challenging putts and pin positions.
Not particularly long and generally forgiving of the high handicapper but a few holes with water.
Greens were generally fine and medium paced but fairways were a bit scruffy with some of them cut very high, almost like a first cut of rough than a fairway on some holes - tended to reduce the roll on a good drive.
Given that many courses in the area are suffering from heavy rains, this seemed to drain well with little noticeable impact from that.
Would play there again - good value
Reston National Golf Course
Played On 07/31/2020Give Reston a miss for a while
I’ve played Reston National more than any other course this year and really appreciated them staying open through COVID. Through Spring and early Summer, the course was in typically great shape but what on earth has happened? I played after a wet day so expected the course to be a bit waterlogged in places but put simply the course should have been closed. I walked but stood in amazement when watching other groups churning up fairways in carts on a cart path only day. A lack of marshaling may have contributed to this.
But the real crime is the state that this course has been allowed to get into. The course management should be ashamed of themselves or preferably fired. I’ve taken this off my list of courses to play until I hear that conditions have improved.
I would recommend everyone give this a miss for a while
Thank you for taking the time to review the course. Aeration was completed on 3/29. With the cooler temps in April, the grass has not grown as quickly as normal and full recovery has taken longer than in years past. Thanks for playing and for your patience as we get back to great course conditions.
