Raven Golf Club - Phoenix
Played On 03/31/2018Course was in excellent shape.
This course is always in good shape. The layout is challenging, but playable. Todays round was quite enjoyable. Every facet of the course was in great condition. The greens here are always a little tricky to read the break. They were just a bit slower than normal, but were rolling very smoothly.
Golf Summerlin - Palm Valley Course
Played On 11/11/2017Solid golf course
My arrival for an early morning tee time started perfectly. A cart attendant came to my car to gather my bags. The pro shop was very friendly and helpful. They had a well kept , full service practice facility. The starter came to the range and introduced me to the other 3 players I was grouped with. The course had just come off path only, and I found the conditions to be very good. The layout itself allows you to challenge your game. There are a number of very aesthetically designed holes on the course. There are also a few great views to be had.Even though this is a Sun city course, you won't come out of the round feeling that way.
Club West Golf Club
Played On 05/04/2017Once again, the Foothills group is a disappointment.
First, let me say that I have never been a big fan of this course to begin with. The layout is not that good. The driving range has always been kind of a joke. You hit balls down into what amounts to an open desert pit. You could mostly count on decent playing surfaces on the course. This is no longer the case. The whole course is no pretty dried and hard. The fairway is still there, but is already starting to go. The greens are TORCHED.......what good is it to play a shot into the green, only to watch the putts hop around like a jumping bean? The Foothills group seems to keep all their courses in this " barely playable " condition. Enough for me.....there are too many other courses at that price that are just better.......
The Grand Bear Golf Course
Played On 03/22/2017Incredible hidden gem
As part of my latest cross country golf trip, I happened upon this course while in Biloxi. What a find to say the least!! First of all, don't be put off by the 30 minute drive and 6 mile road into the national forest to get to it. This only adds to the experience at this Jack Nicklaus masterpiece. The playing surfaces were all very well kept. The layout is very true to some of Jack's best design elements. It will present you with many thoughtful challenges through the round. Aside from the outstanding golf course, you will find the staff to be top notch. I spent plenty of time talking to the head pro about the course. There is a lot of pride put into everything here. This course can hold it's own against any other!! My top pick from anything I have played within 100 miles of Biloxi.
Toka Sticks Golf Club
Played On 10/05/2016The old Williams Air Base course
Since the takeover, very few changes have been made to the course. The bunkers and greens have improved substantially from the old days. The layout is a pretty flat, straight....boring kind of thing. It is a good place for learning the game and having some fun. The new clubhouse is quaint and functional. The staff is friendly and helpful. Pace of play can be an issue, but remember a lot of beginner and novice players use the course.
Stonecreek Golf Club
Played On 10/01/2016Staff has developed serious service issues.
I will start by qualifying that that course condition rating was due to prep for over seed. That being said, the maintenance crew did not stop driving around you long enough to take a shot. The front nine took 3 hours to play, due to 2 groups in front of us that were several holes behind. The staff wasn't willing to do anything to nudge them along. They actually allowed them to group into 6 at the 10th tee. That was enough for the nice couple we grouped with, and us as well. When I lodged a complaint with the staff, I was fully ignored and treated quite rudely. Days later, a staff member called on my direct complaint. He was quite obviously not an experienced manager and only made them look worse. For these reasons, I am telling all of my groups and buddies to play elsewhere, until they can get their staff under control. Customer service is every bit as important to the player as the course is.
Canyon/Lakes at Spanish Trail Country Club
Played On 08/05/2016One of Vegas favorites.
As you may know from reading my many reviews, I am a BIG fan of RTJ designed courses. Spanish Trail is a gem of one at that. The conditions are always great from tee to green, even in August..in Vegas...at 100 outside. That being said, for those who have not played the course, there are no disappointments. The design is tough, but very playable for all skill levels. That is the true genius of an RTJ course that some other designers don't fully consider. A 20 handicapper can play up a tee or two and have a great time, while the scratch golfer on the tips will find a solid test. This is and probably always will be in my top 3 for Vegas courses. "Nuff said"
Friars/Presidio at Riverwalk Golf Club
Played On 07/31/2016Staff could care less about you.......
From our first arrival at the course, I found the staff to be aloof. Even the breakfast we had in the café had below average at best service, with the same on food. What really got me about the outing though, was the fact that a small tournament of about 12 players was ahead of us. They openly taunted us in the fact that they could care less how long it took to play, or how much the course backed up behind them. The few times we did see a ranger, we were handed extremely lame excuses for their behavior. Upon finishing the round, the group stood around and taunted us some more about their extreme attitude toward everyone else and our displeasure with that fact. The golf shop basically blew me off as nobody worth talking to. Too bad for them.....as I am regularly advising large groups on where to play in many different cities..... Riverwalk has earned a GIANT NO GO from me......period!!
Cave Creek Golf Course
Played On 02/05/2016Well....it's officially a GOAT TRACK!!
All I can say is this.....the conditions were flat out deplorable. The whole course is bone dry, not much grass on the fairways, greens are bumpy, torn up and burning out. EVERYTHING of the fairway is practically bare dirt!! Services and ammenities on course...pretty close to nonexistent. Oh yeah let's not forget the 5 hour pace of play. Save your money...play anything else, anywhere else....
Cave Creek Golf Course
Played On 02/04/2016Another Phoenix Muni on the cow pasture list!!
I have not played this course for about 2 years. Back then it was in what I would term as decent shape for a muni. Compared to the year previous, it had slipped somewhat.
This trip however, showed the course to be nothing more than a barely maintained goat track. Thin to no grass fairways. Hard rock dirt everywhere else, including nearly every bunker. The greens were playable. Overall though, a HUGE disappointment. Save your money and play elsewhere!
Desperado/Diablo at Badlands Golf Club
Played On 11/20/2015Great layout, greens on the Desperado 9 almost unplayable
This is a challenging course that runs you through many arroyos/ mini canyons and such. Overall, nice design. The Desperado 9 on this day however, saw greens with ridiculous speeds on them. Since they tilt heavily front to back, getting above the hole was an absolute guarantee of your putt going back into the fairway. Maybe 15 or 16 is just too high on the stimp for greens with that much slope. Still like the course though.......
Sun Mountain at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
Played On 11/19/2015True to Pete Dye, diabolical greens and tricky layout.
I was really impressed with the layout of the course. You must take careful consideration of every shot you make. Nothing new with a Pete Dye course, he loves to torture golfers at every chance. The course lays at an angle in a valley with mountains close by. This leads to some very tough reads on the putts. Course conditions were near tournament quality. Just accept that the first time you play it, you're not going to make many putts.
Canyon/Lakes at Spanish Trail Country Club
Played On 11/18/2015A classic RTJ course
I am a BIG fan of Robert Trent Jones golf courses!! They are all great layouts that are fun to play at all skill levels. This has been a Las Vegas favorite of mine for many years. Conditions were good, as always. Just a great play....
Golf Summerlin - Highland Falls Course
Played On 11/17/2015A decent layout that offers a bit of everything.
The course layout is in keeping with what I have seen many times with Sun City / Del Webb courses. Basic resort style layout that gives you a taste of everything. Course conditions were OK. The grass had it's issues here and there. Greens were a little beat up, but playable. Good overall course for most players.
Los Caballeros Golf Club
Played On 10/17/2015A well designed course in nice condition.
Wickenburg AZ isn't really where you expect to find high quality golf courses, it's a sleepy little horse town with a rich old west history. AND....you would be wrong.....!! Los Caballeros is a course that has been around for a long time...the 70's in fact. Most courses this age have issues...to say the least. Los Caballeros defies this in every way. The clubhouse is filled with old west charm. The practice facilities, while not overly fancy are very well kept. The course itself has a timeless design that will give you great views, challenging holes and quality playing conditions. I will put this course against the Scottsdale courses any day.
Longbow Golf Club
Played On 09/16/2015A great layout, good conditions.....BUT
I like this course..it is usually in good to above average condition, it has a solid layout in a desert target style, that I find interesting.....BUT....I have a few issues with other things here...first and foremost...there is NEXT TO NO WATER available on the course...completely unacceptable in AZ. Second, range balls are a ridiculous 10$...for a lame..virtually target free range...RIP OFF!! Third, I find the staff to be quite aloof...this does not live up to the standard they are trying to advertise.....maybe that's why they aren't as busy as many other area courses...just sayin'
Starfire Golf Club - The King Course
Played On 08/28/20151st time back in over a year
Last year when I played this course, I must say that I wasn't overly impressed with conditions overall. This round however, saw a much improved course. Tee to green was pretty good overall. Quality muni, is the stature I would rate it at now. The layout is an old one, parkland style, without a lot of excitement. It is very playable for a skill levels and will give you an enjoyable round overall.
Palm at McCormick Ranch Golf Club
Played On 08/22/2015Seems to be on a downward slide.
I used to play this course more often a in past years. this was the first trip to the pine course this year. First thing I noticed was that the grass is starting to devolve into a mix of grasses. Some of those grasses are pretty grabby, and shouldn't be found in the fairway. The greens have become pretty inconsistent for both speed and break...they got a little bounce in 'em now. The bunkers are looking pretty muni these days. I have known for awhile that the layout is a little weird on a few holes...you know..some of that stuff that was the "bomb"....in 1982. Hope this isn't a trend...remember...this is supposed to be Scottsdale golf...you certainly ask the price for it...!!
The Vineyard at Escondido
Played On 08/13/2015Another favorite that was nice to see after 9 years.
This course is another personal fave from my days kickin' around SandDog. I am happy to say that she is the same as she ever was. The layout is solid, you get a nice mix of holes. There are plenty of birdie chances out there...as well as dangerous holes where running away with par is a good thing...Course conditions were good overall. Happy that we made it back to play again!!
Maderas Golf Club
Played On 08/12/2015Wow...that was awesome!!!
Maderas has instantly made my best of San Diego list...Only Torrey Pines South tops it in my book( and barely). There is everything to like about this course. The layout is challenging, well thought out, scenic...and yada yada yada.... Conditions are nothing less than what you expect from a Troon course. I found the staff to be quite friendly and helpful, almost to a fault. Be warned though...bring your "A" game here. This course will "make you cry for mommie" if you don't...hehe...
Thanks for playing and providing your feedback. We will make sure to improve from your experience.
