Club at Hidden Creek, The
Played On 10/15/2017Short, but fun.
This course is pretty short and not especially difficult even though there is OB on many holes. It was in great shape for our round and even with a ton of players on the course we got done in about 4:15 as a foursome, which is about as quick as could be expected. Fairways and rough were in great shape. Bunkers were mostly good though some areas look like they've collected water recently. There were also a few low lying spots that were pooling up to create some non hazard water hazards. I think this has been the case for as long as I can remember here. The greens were almost universally flawless less one with a touch of damage and one that was obviously vandalized (car did donuts on it... ugh) at some point, but mostly recovered.
Lost Key Golf Club
Played On 10/13/2017Doesn't get mich better...
I hadn't been to this course in around 10 years as I moved away from the area but it was always my favorite course near Pensacola, just ahead of The Moors which was so unfortunately dozed for more ranch homes. I have to say, it's just as nice now as when it was new and the conditions were practically flawless. The greens looked as though they were punched not too far back but considering rolled very true and were lush and consistant. Fairways perfect. Rough perfect. Bunkers perfect. And the course layout is just an absolute blast. So challenging for a course without a ton of length but if you can miss small, you'll typically be in ok shape to make a decent score. The only thing I miss from the "old days" at Lost Key is the trailer clubhouse, outdoor grill and the original 16th and 17th holes. And maybe a few trees that were lost in Ivan. The fancy upscale golf vibe with a "beautiful" clubhouse has never been something that did anything for me and this place felt like it was about golf and golf alone in those days, versus the centerpiece of a beachy gated community which is what it is now. But that's nitpicking. If you're in Penscaola or Gulf Shores and wanna play somewhere nice, try Lost Key. It's as pretty as any golf course I've seen and the course plays every bit as good as it looks.
Indian Hills Golf Club
Played On 09/21/2017It's a golf course
It's a golf course. That's about the best thing i can say about Indian Hills. Pace of play was fine until we got to the back and then we were held up by a few twosomes for a 4.5 hour round. Worse were the greens which rolled slower than my grandma's old shag carpet. Worse than that was the lie I got after I drove the ball to the entrance of the green, between two bunkers, on one of the short par 4s—ended up in a nice patch of dirt and zoysia cut to the roots. A couple feet to my left and right were areas marked as GUR that looked identical to the garbage I was sitting in. Houses everywhere ligning the fairways. It was cheap as heck but I would have rather paid double to play something with at least some level of grooming.
Hunter Ranch Golf Course
Played On 09/15/2017It's okay
I thought the course was just okay... greens were great, fairways good to soso, sand good, rough really patchy. Layout I expected to be a lot better based on reviews. There aren't really any memorable holes here, which is surprising considering the location and ratings. I also felt like the white tees were too far back and if we hadn't been able to pass by the twosome in front of us at the turn, we would have had a 4:30 round on an empty course. We played the back nine in 1:45 or so while taking our time.
Dos Lagos Golf Course
Played On 09/07/2017Love this course!
I really enjoyed my round at Dos Lagos. It was my first time playing the course and I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it was. I plan to play this course, along with Eagle across the freeway, much more often.
Pros:
• Fun layout, a bit quirky at times, but in a good way
• I like the par 70 layout with 5 par 3s
• Couple reachable Par 5s
• Fairways were in wonderful shape
• Yardages well marked on both the cart paths and fairways
• The rough was moderate and pretty consistent from hole to hole
• Pace of play was excellent on a weekday afternoon, finished in 3:20 as a twosome
• Great views on the back 9
• Tee boxes were above average for the area
• Not many roped off areas or holes where you have to park the cart 100 yards from your ball or the green
Cons:
• Not many opportunities to hit driver if you prefer to play conservatively off the tee
• No on course beverage service
• No in cart GPS (though smart phones cover this generally these days)
• The course heavily favors the miss left. If you're a righty and miss with the slice as I tend to do, you can find lateral hazards on many holes, the front in particular.
• A few of the cups were domed up and it cost me a couple putts
• Do any courses in SoCal have nice fluffy sand in the bunkers? These bunkers were more like hitting out of wet dirt, which seems to be the norm everywhere
Neutral:
Greens were a bit pocked marked and rolled rather slow for my taste. It also looked like someone who was twisting their foot with every step had played 36 in the morning before we went out. I've never seen so many roughed up spike marks on a green in my life of golfing. It was just plain weird. Can't fault the course for this but it was a bit irritating.
Eagle Glen Golf Club
Played On 08/17/2017Really nice course
First time playing Eagle Glen and thought it was great. I'm a bogie golfer so played the white tees when I saw the recommendation on the GPS screen and they were challenging without being overly intimidating. Fairways were in really nice shape for the most part and the greens were some of the nicest I've putted on recently.
Hidden Valley Golf Club
Played On 08/03/2017Nice Course, tough the first time
This is a pretty nice course tucked into the hills in Norco. The layout is interesting and you'll have to make a few layup/go for it choices throughout the round. There are a lot of blind shots that make course knowledge here a must for better scores. Greens are on the smaller side I'd say and fairways are relatively forgiving on most holes. On the day we played, the fairways needed to be mowed badly and so played more like first cut rough and a couple greens were sandy from a recent punch but the course was otherwise in nice shape. Never found a bunker so no idea what the sand conditions were like. Pace of play was great on a weekday afternoon. 2 of us finished our round in around 3 hours. Carts have GPS but it's a super old and tough to read LCD display under the dash. Do not try and walk this course.
Thank You for the kind words. We here at Eagle Glen work hard to give our guests the best possible experience we can! Look forward to seeing you out here again.
