Only play here if out of options

Course was very, very average. Greens are “plinko” like….
Untrue, unpredictable and, in some areas, unputtable. With so many other options in Myrtle, don’t play here. We had a group of 24 teeing off at 12:30 with most of us driving from D.C. the same morning. We arrived at 11:30 and the cart staff couldn’t wait to get us out - almost like they couldn’t wait to get home. Greens are as bad as anywhere in the grand strand. We only came back because last year the greens were absolutely gone (no grass, crusty, hard, terrible) and they offered us a replay for free. Layout is tight, but manageable and there’s not a single redeeming quality of this course - other than the bar staff
in the clubhouse who was wonderful. Spend your money elsewhere. Between the aggressive staff, the bar closing at 5:30pm and the bad greens, spend your money where you’re appreciated!

Worth every penny

I returned from Cabo 4 days ago and all I can think about is how much I want to play this course again. I was hesitant to shell out $350+ but I don’t regret it one bit. The driving range is the nicest, most interesting range I’ve ever seen and it’s not close. You are met by a bar as you walk onto the range, as well as your caddie. The range is expansive and gorgeous, hitting ProV’s and enjoying the dozens of targets you can aim at. The real fun begins on the first hole - a demanding par 5 that requires a well struck tee shot. Once out on the course, you wonder how Davis Love even envisioned the holes amongst the large, sprawling dunes. As you wind through the next few first holes, the elevation changes and demanding nature of the course becomes very apparent. A caddie is mandatory but there’s no other way to play this place for the first time, caddies are invaluable. I’d write a hole by hole analysis, but suffice it to say the back 9 is one of the best 9 hole sides in the world. You have winding dunes amongst the Pacific Ocean that require a focused eye or a big number awaits. I’m a low handicapper, I had 4 birdies and 4 double bogeys... the place is demanding and requires well struck shots - especially on the par 3’s. It also requires a well placed approach shot... the greens are undulating and challenging - large, tiered and fast. Just hitting the green isn’t good enough, I saw a few 4-putts! You have to know where to miss and take advantage. Dramatic is the best word I can think of when describing this course; just an amazing layout and an absolute treat. Hospitality could not have been better and I couldn’t be more impressed with the condition of the course. It’s pure and true.

A must play....

I am a new member at Westwood as of 11/1/19.

This course is a true gem - the turf conditions rival any other premier course in the D.C. region (Congressional, Avenel, etc.) and the entire experience playing Westwood is absolute first class. The mix of tees make this course extremely playable. Short hitters, play the whites. Please. Long hitters, go all the way back (6900+) and put this track to the test. A decent round of ball striking will allow you to play with the same ball all 18 holes - well struck shots are rewarded with birdie looks. The fairways are lush and allow for plenty of roll. There isn’t a weed of a bare spot anywhere on the course - it’s immaculate. The greens are as true as carpet and are well kept. The mix of par 3’s, 4’s and 5’s make you want to play the course again and again. The subtle breaks in the greens will make you wonder how you lipped your putt. There are a few doglegs, but the course is right in front of you and demands a well struck shot. The clubhouse and amenities are top notch - the locker rooms, pub and restaurants are fantastic. The range, putting green and chipping green are exactly what you need. Course is extremely walkable and the routing is well thought out.

Westwood is great. Very underrated in the region and is a place to play again and again. Keep up the good work!

A good test

We caught playing #4 at a good time... a day before the women’s north/south and less than a month before the Men’s U.S. Amateur. Course was in fantastic shape with very lush fairways and the greens were rolling around 11 and were true.. The layout demands a good approach shot, much like #2. Greens that really stood out to me were hole 2 and hole 16. 16 is a short, driveable par 4 and the only pin location for a decent putt is in the back left... - middle/front pins are extremely demanding. Hole 2 is a reachable par 5 but there are wild undulations that make going for it and hitting it close is nearly impossible. Also, like course #2, it’s hard to lose a ball which makes it very playable off the tee and relatively score-able if you’re driving it well. The greens are very firm right now (1 year old) so the run out is still 10 feet more than it should be on approach shots. Pace of play was slow, slower than it should be for sure. I think people are playing the wrong tees and spending a lot of time on the greens since they are so tricky, and they are tricky - the whites are all the course you need if you’re not a scratch. A bonus is you wind thru a few holes of course #2 and the layout on 4 is now surprisingly similar with the same grass and waste areas. All-in, course #2 is the king of the resort, but #4 is a really nice track and, for me, the second best course at Pinehurst.

Private but accessable

River Creek is a fantastic private golf course. I have been invited to play in their member/guest the past two years and I really enjoy the entire experience River Creek delivers. The course is always in great shape considering the amount of play it gets from a fairly large membership. The layout is a really good mix of challenging holes and easier holes with a few doglegs - for the most part it's right in front of you. There are some nice elevation changes and the par 3's really get your attention even though the yardages aren't crazy long. Holes 15-18 are a true test and I love how the course finishes with some bite. The greens are just the right firmness/quickness and roll true. If the rough gets up the course really shows it's teeth and fairways become a premium. The clubhouse is excellent and the driving range and chipping area is above average. The staff is courteous, professional and accommodating. There are a number of houses on the course as it's laid out in the River Creek development. Keep up the good work RCC!

From decent track to dogtrack

I have played Marlton a handful of times each year over the past 6-7 years. This past year the course has taken a noticeable nose dive and is in about as bad of shape as any golf course I have ever seen/played. I don't know if it is under relatively new ownership or if the owners who have had it for a while have given up, but the course condition is reflective of a group of folks who don't care about the playing conditions. Starting from tee to green: The tee boxes are dirt pits, looking more like something you'd play horseshoes in than golf. My Dad joked that you need to "dig in" like you're in a fairway bunker. It's a struggle to find a decent patch of grass in the fairway to hit an approach shot from and weeds are the majority of what is growing. There were 6 or 7 greens that weren't too bad but even those have considerable ball marks/chewed up and bare spots (those are on the player, mostly). Other greens (like #10) are almost totally lost and un-puttable. The bunkers haven't been raked in quite some time and the one I took the time to rake actually turned out to play nicely (took me 2 minutes to rake). There's also noticeable graffiti on number 3 and 6 - yes, graffiti. Additionally, it took me 15 minutes to have someone come into the clubhouse so I could pay at 7:30am for an 8:00am tee time... I walked around the clubhouse and outside and I couldn't find a Marlton employee for a while - are there really only a handful of employees at the course now? Just another tell tale sign of a course and operation that is circling the drain. The D.C. area had prime grass growing conditions in the late spring with all the rain we had (other courses are in great shape), so you would expect Marlton to be in as good of shape as it could be in... it was far from it and I definitely won't be returning, even if the greens fee is extremely cheap. You've been warned!

Members Delight

I was invited to play Trump (championship course) as a guest. Most of the courses in the Mid-Atlantic are tree lined so I was expecting this to be more parkland than anything else. From the first green, you can see this is anything but tree lined and is practically links golf. I loved it. The amenities are world class as you would imagine at a Trump property - gorgeous clubhouse and the staff offers more than you could ever need at a club, truly first class. The course was just immaculate and in pristine condition. The fairways are like carpet and the greens are fast and true. The rough provides a challenge if you're in it and if you end up in the high rough (the true protection of the course) you are likely losing your ball. With the exception of 1-2 doglegs, the course is right in front of you and very fair. Good shots are rewarded, bad shots punished. This seems like one of those courses you wouldn't get tired of playing over and over again (especially considering the condition of it) and while the members pay a premium to belong, it really has to be a members delight to belong at Trump.

Trending WAY down...

This was my third time playing here. I had a family member in town and decided I'd take him to a "premium" public track here in Northern Virginia. I see the previous two reviews that played on 8/20 and I can't agree more. We've had some thunderstorms, but this course was beyond soggy - multiple balls plugged in the fairway and around greens... They may we over watering to avoid losing some of the holes, but it was way too wet for a mid summer round with temps in the high 80's. Traps were unraked and a few were washed out from storms we had days ago... Where is the maintenance? Multiple aprons around the greens were totally ripped out and just sand. Multiple holes with areas of new sod around the greens and, overall, the greens were not as true or as fast as they have been. It's a true test and a real challenge but for $109, it should be in MUCH better shape. Shame on the staff and superintendent for letting this course fall apart like it is. If your plans are to get it back to a $109 course, charge $70 until it's back in $109 condition.

Nice track, painfully slow

I went out with a customer and while the course played well - fast greens and great fairways, it took almost 3 hours to get through the front 9. We decided to call it quits after 9 holes and have lunch then head home to avoid a 6+ hour round. They had groups going off every 8 minutes and on the first tee alone there were 3 groups. Our foursome waited an average of 10 minutes per shot, per hole and it was an absolutely brutal pace of play. It was 80 degrees and sunny so that made up for some of the slowness but it was a very, very slow 9 holes. I'd love to go back because the course plays well and the layout is great but they have to do something about the abysmal pace before I go back there with so many other courses in/around D.C.

Fantastic Course

My wife and I went on a weekend retreat to Bedford for the third time in the last 3 years. This is the third time I've played the Old Course and it is just a great experience. The staff is as friendly and as accommodating as you can ever imagine. Pace of play is well maintained. Perfect fairways, true greens and a great test of golf matched with a beautiful layout. I've played as a single twice and both rounds were around 2.5 hours for 18 holes. The practice area is close to PGA standards and is very well maintained. I can't say enough about this course and resort in general - it's worth the drive, the money and every minute of your time. The Par 3's can put you in a hole quickly, give them all the respect they deserve!

A True Gem

I'm from Washington D.C. - I came down to visit a friend in Pensacola and he set up a tee time at Brewton. The course is one of the nicest I have ever played and I've played a LOT of nice courses in my day. I still can't believe the value for the experience. This is Boo Weekley's home course so I'm sure he spends some money to keep it as nice as it is. The practice range is everything you need - nice grass, plenty of distances to hit at, etc. The layout is first class - some easy holes, some challenging... For the most part, generous fairways and many holes right in front of you with a few doglegs/blind shots mixed in. The greens are tour quality with no exaggeration. They were rolling around 11 when I played in December and they were as true as you can ask for. The greens alone put many expensive, high end, courses to shame. Tied in with the southern hospitality, absolutely no waiting on tee boxes, the condition of the course, the value and the overall experience you'd be a fool to pass up a round here. HIGHLY recommend spending a day here, kudos to Brewton CC!

Best course in the country

Wow, #2 is a true gem. The experience in the clubhouse, the people in the clubhouse and the facilities at No. 2 are unmatched. The course is immaculate and very playable. The back nine is easier than the front nine and it's almost impossible to lose to a golf ball which really makes it "scoreable." I played here for 36 holes with my Dad. We had caddies for both rounds #Bob and Adam# and they were just awesome on the bag. A caddie is a must as there are reads on the greens you simply can't see ##11 for example.# The greens can be quite punishing if you pin seek the wrong pin placements but it's a true, fair test which I can't wait to go back and play again and again. Worth every penny. Get there early to practice and get used to the greens.

Greens like nowhere else - good and bad

Warm welcome, great folks in the clubhouse, tremendous facility and a great range. Pace of play is ideal but this a more than a hard test of golf. The layout is superb and the fairways are like carpet. The greens roll true but they are an unfair test for anyone not playing the PGA Tour. They are very, very firm and depending on where they put the pin, impossible to get it close. There was a 12 handicap in my group who took an 8 on a green he hit in 2 on a par 4 because of the severity of the green/pin location. You can't even get a divot tool in the green deeper than 1/4 inch. If you play here, expect many approach shots to roll off the green. Chipping takes a pro touch to get it close to the flag and if you can shoot your handicap, be sure to thank the golf God's. Worth a shot to play though, just be prepared for some true frustration on/around the greens.

Where are your Marshals?

Great restaurant, clubhouse, practice area and experience. Layout was a little tricked out but a fair test of golf with very true greens that rolled pure.

We went out at 11am on a Friday. We finished at 4:30pm. Yes, that's right, 4:30 a 5.5 hour round. I could only imagine this place on weekends. One guy I played with said it was "the home of the 5 hour round." On this day, 5 hours would have been a treat. For $100, you should have marshals governing pace of play. We waited on every single tee box and twice on Par 3's we had 3 groups on the hole - unacceptable.

I'm a 6 handicap and really enjoyed the course but until I hear pace of play gets better I will not be returning.

Thanks for your comments, and glad to hear that you were impressed with our facilities! The challenging course can occasionally cause rounds to exceed our 4 1/2 hour goal, but we've recently started experimenting with teeing folks off of #10 tee to play the back nine first, and the overall pace has improved!

Come back to see us again soon!

Thank you for sharing your feedback - both positive and negative - on your recent experience. We've been working with all of our course marshals to be sure we are helping golfers finish their rounds within our course's time rating of 4 hours & 40 minutes. We have instituted new procedures and guidelines to help us stay within that goal even in heavy times of play and we will be increasing our daily vigilance!

We have heard a few negative pace comments - particularly from groups following outing play - and we are working to maintain a 4 1/2 hour (or better) pace to help increase the enjoyment of our golf course!

Thanks again for recognizing our great facilities and guest service levels!

Great track

Fantastic course - played here 12-15 times and the greens are ALWAYS true. The staff is very helpful and cordial and this course is perfectly priced for what you get. The driving range is dated but offers what you need before a round. The greens are the protection for this course for good ball strikers so spend some time with the flat stick before the round. Pace of play gets slow at times but they marshal is pretty well. Great track, looking forward to getting back to Glenn Dale soon.

Play only if you MUST

Played here 5 times, will probably never play Greendale again. For nearly $60 on a weekend, you would expect more than what you get. No driving range, very rude and unpleasant staff (Starters especially) and extremely poorly kept. The greens are the slowest greens I have ever played and I've played some true dog tracks. If you don't check in 30 minutes before your tee time, they give you slot away - because, you know, getting to a course early to sit and wait with no practice range is ideal. The layout is decent and you can put up a number if you can ever hit a putt hard enough. Clubhouse is pathetic. If you're looking for rude, bossy folks and terrible playing conditions this place is for you!
