Lost Marsh Shortee Review

For a mid-May round the course is looking really good. Course offers both walking and riding rates. Given the Covid-19 situation it's 1 player per cart if riding.

The course is a mix of link and parkland style courses. The openings 4 holes puts you to a test and can set the tone for the rest of the round. I like this course as it offers challenges for every skill level of golfer. Challenges long players to choose a a shorter club off the tee to account for dog legs and short players to force carry hazards if they want to attack pins. The greens provide their own challenges with subtle breaks and unforgiving if found above the hole for a downhill putt.

The staff is friendly and accommodating during the current pandemic. Carts are an issue though right now but won't once courses are fully open. Foursomes taking 4 carts applies a capacity constraint. If you're booking a late morning or early afternoon round when the morning groups aren't back yet, you will have to wait for a cart.

Carts come equipped with accurate GPS, usually matched with my arccos system, gps watch and laser range finder. Distances to pins and hazards are easy to navigate on the touchscreen. Electric carts come with USB ports, although I didn't test it to see if it charged my phone.

All in all I give the course a solid 4.5 out 5. The value exceeds what I would get comparably in Illinois, where price gouging seems to be the norm.

Rude staff and poor conditions

Firstly, the staff didn't seem too concerned with actually accommodating our golf outing. We planned to have a short 30 minute meeting prior to our outing for our league and the waitress at the time says "you people just keep moving around!" The connotation and tone of her voice was condescending and dare I say a little racist. We are all of a particular race. We used the course rating from their site to calculate our groups' handicaps and they had put all the tee boxes we would have used up towards the ladies boxes. Along with the tee boxes the bunkers are more rock than actual sand. Pray you dont go in them. Also the bathrooms have that old building stagnant urine smell. 55 dollars was a bit steep for how poorly maintained the course was in this late in the season. I will not be returning to this course. I remember this course way better back in the day I dont know what changed.

Terrible Conditions

I play for a Sunday league and have been to this course before. I feel like the layout of the course is actually really nice but the conditions were unplayable this most recent visit. It's a smaller operation a simple club house nothing too fancy. I'll describe what I mean in the breakdown below.

Bad:

The main issue with the course is that everything has been left poorly maintained.

1) Course Conditions - the absolute worst I've experienced to date. Greens were the length of first cuts making putting slower than molasses. There was no distinction between rough and fairway in terms of grass length. Roughs were well over ankle height and grass clippings were left left to die on top of the existing grass so if your balls happened to roll under some dead grass good luck trying to find it. Bunkers weren't bunkers, they didn't have sand in them but they did have patches of grass growing within them and were hard baked mud basically.
2) Pace of Play - with everyone trying to find their balls even in the "fairways" it was close to a 5 hour round with the majority of the time trying to find your ball. I know some will say just hit fairways, but when the fairways are the same conditions as the rough it's impossible to keep a steady pace.

I would be harder on the course but it looks like a small local operation, nonetheless it's already the end of May I would expect the course to be in better condition. The management team has a lot of work ahead of them but unfortunately I would rather spend my time and money else where based upon this most recent experience.
