Blue Heron Golf Course
Played On 07/21/2020Great Muni, short, fun layout
I stumbled across Blue Heron trying to find an alternative to Queenstown Harbor (couldn't devote the time or $ this trip) and Hunters Oaks (fun once, but conditions too poor to play again). Blue Heron is a great find! Short, but interesting, where precision is rewarded. Loved the triple green on the back nine. In good condition. Staff very friendly and helpful. Great course to test short game. Definitely will play again!
Hunters Oak Golf Club - Old Course
Played On 07/04/2020Like playing 1900, before modernity
My grandfather died when I was 7 yrs old, 30 years before I started playing golf. I have a picture of him as a teenager in 1905 playing the Sunset Hill House course in Sugar Hill, NH which I tracked down, and played years ago, after I took up the game. Course conditions seemed pretty much unchanged; this was the era before manicured perfection and irrigation.
Hunters Oaks played very much the same way but is a far more interesting course. Expect an experience as if it is 1900--dry conditions, "greens" that are rough and imperfect, fairways that are dusty and hot. However, the design makes it worth playing. Many bunkers (now mostly grassed in) protect approaches. The eighth hole is particularly interesting with a series of bunkers dotting the fairway all the way to the green. Visually quite intimidating from the tee box, and targeting distances is key!
I have a high tolerance for poor conditions, when there is another reason to play. This unique 9 holer is worth experiencing-- its one of a kind.
$10 with a cart. COVID 19 honor system (put the money in the slot).
You will get glimpses of how great a course this can be. It would take time and money. For $10, it is worth a play, if only to reconnect to the old style of course conditions.
South Riding Golf Club
Played On 09/16/2017Good test, condition a bit ragged
Played for the second time. Course layout rewards accuracy.
Greens are a bit ragged with bare spots which detracted from the overall quality of this track. Pay attention to distances to hazards that cross fairways.
Starter gave comprehensive overview. Professional and thorough, encouraging keeping up with group in front. Pace of play was good for a Saturday morning.
Will definitely play again. Hopefully condition will improve.
Laconia Country Club
Played On 08/20/2017Incredible greens!
My brother has been a member for many years. I finally got to play on a recent visit. Some of the best greens on which I have ever putted! Fantastic and challenging! A great course, as defined by perfect shots are amply rewarded, good shots are in play, but bad shots are trouble. While the course is not particularly long, it threads through woods, some fairways have contours so accuracy is rewarded. Straight is better than long.
The greens were memorable, with challenging pin placements, and conditions exceptional. Stimp 10.2 the day I played (posted on the starter booth).
Private, but if you can be the guest of a member, LCC is well worth playing!
General's Ridge Golf Course
Played On 02/25/2017If you want the thrill of really testing your game
Wow! Hard but wicked fun! It is true "target golf" where you must be strategic about where you place your shots to advance. On almost every hole, I found myself having to think through risks and rewards more thoroughly than most other courses I play. Very intellectually challenging! A couple of suggestions for those contemplating playing it: Hitting it straight is far more important than hitting it long. As others have written, once off the fairway, the ball is lost so use a club that is reliably straight instead of pulling out a club for the distance. Another is to use the contours of the land. Many of the fairways are sloped l to r or r to l. I found success hitting towards the slopes, then letting it feed down to (generally) flatter land. Lots of elevation changes! Finally, on almost every approach shot, there is a more safe choice that might not be obvious at first, and a higher risk choice--spend a minute thinking it through. Last suggestion: commit to playing it twice (but not in the same day!). This was my second round at GR and I was much more effective having learned some about the course from round 1 a couple of years ago.
The course will test your putting and greens reading skills like few courses in No VA! None are flat; some are severely sloped which really challenged me to be much more creative in "feeling" putts and much more strategic about where to leave "misses". Note that when I played, course was very dry so greens were very, very fast!! And, as a previous comment mentioned, it is better to approach putts from below the hole!
I agree with previous comments about the deterioration of the cart paths, the slopes of the fairways (I left the cart on the path and humped up and down the hills), etc. To me, those don't matter nearly as much as the thrill of the difficulty of thinking through how to, and trying to execute, approach shots and putts, particularly on the back nine. Yes, tee boxes were generally chewed up and sandy but I was able to find firm footing on every one.
If you want manicured perfection and an easy round, this is not the place. If you want the thrill of really testing your game against course contours not normally found at this price, it is well worth playing. If you are up for a challenge, General's Ridge is a blast!
