Edgewater Golf Club
Played On 05/22/2015Hard to Find But Worth the Drive
Edgewater isn't close to anything, really, but is worth your time to get to. The course was in great shape for the most part. There was a stray spot here or there that was a little bare, but as compared to other courses I've played lately, it compares very favorably. Edgewater had the best conditioned tee boxes I've seen in nearly a year. The greens were very lush and actually played much slower than they looked. I'm not a particularly good putter, and I don't think I've ever said this before, but I wished their greens had been a little faster. There are quite a few holes with elevation changes from tee to fairway, so club selection is key. Most of the greens are fairly large and receptive. It was not particularly hot on the day I played. but there were coolers with bottles of water placed every three or four holes, which I thought was a nice touch. I also encountered quite a bit of wildlife on the course: rabbits. wild turkeys, and deer in particular.
Couple of things to note: This is not a walkable course. There is usually long drives between holes. Also, there are areas to the left or right of many of the fairways that are marked as hazards, so you need to pay attention to not ground your club in these areas.
Lincoln Country Club
Played On 05/17/2015Straight Hitter Paradise
Was the first off on a Sunday morning. This is not a walkers course as there are long drives between some holes. Course has fairly wide fairways and large mostly flat greens. If you miss with your tee shot, you will find trouble. Straight hitters should be able to score well here. There are a few dogleg holes and a couple with large elevation changes. The greens were in great shape. Fairways and tee boxes were decent. The only problematic areas were those that were in shade most of the time. The 18th hole is kind of a quirky finish. It's almost as if they had room for 17 1/2 holes and had to come up with something to complete 18. I would definitely come back here to play again.
The Tillery Tradition Country Club
Played On 05/10/2015Great course on Lake Tillery
Played on a Sunday afternoon in intermittent light rain. The greens are in great shape, and the rest of the course is coming along. It should be perfect by the time summer rolls around. My only complaint about the greens were how slow they were. I could never get the speed down. This was echoed by another golfer in a group I played through. While this course is on Lake Tillery, the lake never comes into play on the course. There are several blind dogleg tee shots and elevated tee boxes where course knowledge is a big help. Some of the greens also have small areas or 'fingers' where it can be tough to get at the hole if it's placed there. The clubhouse is fairly new and is really nice. I haven't eaten there but I've heard the food is really good.
Highland Creek Golf Club
Played On 04/27/2015Highland Creek is Moving Forward, but Work Still to be Done
As with most other former CT courses, I've avoided playing Highland Creek for quite some time. Recent reviews have talked about how the course is coming back, so I decided I'd give it a try for the $29 twilight rate online. You can tell that the new management is working on improving the course, but it will take some time. Most of the fairways and greens are very, very thin. The fairways were all running very fast, as I got good roll on every tee shot. The only exception was #2 fairway, which may be the lowest point on the course. The greens need more uniform grass growth on them. The slopes on HC greens are too severe for as bumpy as they are currently. You can't get a putt started online and have it hold because of the thinness of the grass. Some teeboxes have had extensive work done to them, while others need more attention. I think the course is going to need another full growing season to get to where it needs to be. They also need to repair/replace steps/walkways to some of the tees and greens. All of the bunkers did have nice, white sand in them. Highland Creek is definitely a work in progress and should improve as the year goes on.
Eagle Chase Golf Club
Played On 04/26/2015Eagle Chase is Worth the Drive
Based on recent reviews of Eagle Chase, I decided to play here for the first time in about 10 years. The course was in great shape. I was surprised at how dry it was after the all-day rain on Saturday. Tees, fairways, and greens were all lush, and bunkers were well maintained. There is quite a bit of elevation change particularly on the front 9, and several water carries on the back 9. Pace of play was a little slow. I played with a member who said that folks usually get around quicker than the pace on this particular day. I will definitely go back.
Badin Inn Golf Resort & Club
Played On 04/12/2015Hidden Little Gem
Badin Inn is greening up nicely. The course is not overly long but there is plenty of elevation change. There are a few quirky holes (3, 6, 7, and 12), so course knowledge goes a long way. The greens were a little slow on this day, but I'm sure will speed up as the weather warms. The restaurant is excellent, and the Inn, golf course, and surrounding town are one of the most unique settings I've ever played golf in.
Warrior Golf Club
Played On 01/19/2015Great Winter Day at Warrior
Got a great deal for an afternoon round on GolfNow. Started as a single but joined up with a group as it was slow going on the course. (MLK Day) The greens were in excellent shape for mid-January, although I wish more poeple would fix ball marks. The course was in great shape, with the notable exception of the tee boxes, which have been an issue at Warrior for some time. The course is very playable and offers challenges and opportunity for all skill levels. I played well and shot 85.
Rock Barn Golf and Spa - Jackson Course
Played On 01/11/2015Loved Rock Barn!
This was my first trip to Rock Barn and I'll definitely be back. It was cold; they held up play until 11am for the temps to rise above freezing. The ground was frozen in many places, but that didn't affect play that much. The Jackson course is very playable for a higher handicap golfer like myself. There are lots of elevation changes to deal with, and some water hazards too, but most of those are easily avoided. The greens are large and the bunkers have plenty of sand in them. The pro shop staff and grill are top notch. I will definitely be back to play the Jackson course in warmer conditions and will also try the Jones course as well.
Rolling Hills Golf Club
Played On 06/20/2014Great Course For Beginners
I played Rolling Hills for the first time a couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised with what I found. The course is not overly long, but does have a good bit of elevation change on some holes. Most of the fairways are very wide, and the greens are large and flat. This would be a great course to take a beginner to learn how to play. They can spray the ball around a bit, but still be able to find their ball and play it. It is not overly long, either. The greens were lush and putted true. Pace of play on a Friday afternoon was great. A couple of groups let me play through immediately.
McCanless Golf Club
Played On 03/21/2014Great Little Course For The Money
I've played McCanless probably between 40-50 times. The greens fees are going to be in the $20 range (I've played for as little as $13). For that amount of money, the course is great. It isn't overly long, but there are several challenging holes. 6, 9, 11, 12, and 13 immediately come to mind. The greens on this course are tiny, averaging about 1500 sq. ft. You will miss a lot of greens, so you're short game will get a workout. Scott, the head pro/GM and his staff treats me like a member, and slower groups almost always let me play through. The course doesn't have any bunkers, but there are challenging areas around the greens. Most of the greens are pitched from back to front, so staying underneath the hole is key. Don't worry about what the course doesn't have and enjoy the challenge that it does present, and you'll have a great time.
The Club at Irish Creek
Played On 11/10/2013Great Course!
The Club at Irish Creek is a great course. Davis Love, III came in and renovated the original Kannapolis Country Club, including designing several new holes on the back nine. The course has a great mix of short and long holes, uphill and downhill holes, and Lake Kannapolis comes into play on several holes. I played as a single on a weekday in November, so the course was wide open. This is a private club, but I would definitely consider joining if I were in the market for a private club.
Green Oaks Golf Club
Played On 07/08/2013Don't Waste Your Time
Green Oaks is a pretty poor choice for a course. I would only consider this as a last resort. The course is very inexpensive and it shows. Lots of weeds in fairways and greens. Some of the holes little or no fairway to speak of, which makes it hard to decide where to hit your tee shot. There is some elevation change as the course sits on top of an old mine.
