Beware the park fee

Stony Creek is a beautiful course - well worth the $30 I paid to play, including cart (senior rate). However, if you are just visiting, as I was, be aware that there is a $10 fee to enter the Metropark which houses the course.

Renewed acquaintances

Hadn't played here in years. Didn't remember a single hole except for the one where my son-in-law got a hole in one! Challenging. I need to go back to exact revenge on a couple of holes that i would have played differently had I known the course.

Bring your own group

Pearl CC is a great course to play. But I have found they cater to tourist bookings. I was a single golfer. There were two groups of three golfers each in front of and behind me. All foreign. None of them would let me join them. So I played as a single waiting on every hole. I always enjoy meeting new people and the pace of a foursome when I golf. Not so yesterday. Wasn't my fault. To be fair, the starter asked me if I wanted to jump and join a group on 4, finishing 1-3 afterwards. I declined. So I played best ball with myself, hitting two balls on each hole. Still would have preferred a little friendliness.

One step at a time

I have played Ko'olau many times. Two or three times each visit to the islands. When you visit here, you must be prepared to play wet, sloppy golf. This time, however, was the wettest. It rained on and off for the first nine holes. The course was almost unplayable in spots. Bunkers had standing water. Cart path only. Yet I had a blast! I love the challenge of this course. Don't pass up a chance to challenge yourself with elements, forced carries, funny angles, elevated greens and huge traps. Do it!

More bite than it looks

From the road, the course looks fairly flat and easy. Not so. Nice use of angles and features like ponds and high grass. Number 12 is diabolical. If you're straight, course plays well. If you're off just a touch, get ready to be creative. Greens were a little slow. Bunkers deceiving. Very soft when you enter but not so soft underneath the ball, tended to skip the club rather than blast. Had a great time, would love to play again.
