Carlton Oaks Lodge & Country Club
Played On 06/30/2015Used to be a great course
You can tell that this Dye design used to be a great course. Sadly it hasn't been maintained for years. Dirt tee boxes and fairways, especially on the front 9, are common.
Not much grass in the fairways and few of the bunkers have anything resembling sand. The greens were slow but fairly smooth if you overlooked the 400 unrepaired ball marks on every one. Pace of play was a complete joke, 2.5 hours on the front and despite seeing a ranger a couple of times he did absolutely nothing.
The back 9 was a little better but not much. Properly maintained this could be a truly great course once again but as it sits now it looks more like one of the tired old muni's.
Ventana Canyon - Canyon Course
Played On 06/04/2015Gorgeous, challenging course
The $49 Golf Now green fee brought Ventana Canyon back to my budget and it was a pleasure to play a course this nice. The greens were firm, very fast, probably 11+ on the stimp which made them difficult to hold but very smooth to putt.
From the moment you arrive you know you are at a first class facility. The staff and amenities were great though the lack of a GPS in their carts was a surprise. I'd played here once before several years ago so was somewhat familiar with the course. Local knowledge helps a lot as there are a lot of blind shots and the greens are rarely flat which is difficult to see from the fairways.
Being June in Tucson the weather could have been a problem but got lucky and had a nice cool day (in the 80's), and managed 18 in just 3.5 hours with only a little bit of waiting on the last few holes. I'll be back.
Friars/Presidio at Riverwalk Golf Club
Played On 03/18/2015The course needs some work
Half of each green had recently been punched and heavily sanded which rendered those portions nearly unplayable. The rest of the greens were getting most of the play and ball marks were everywhere. The greens were fast, probably 11 on the stimp. The practice green was closed as it was being punched and sanded. The fairways were very thin, probably due to the lack of water.
It is a challenging layout that would be a lot more fun if the course was in better shape. Great pace of play teeing off at 1230 we played in just over 3 hours.
Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa
Played On 03/09/2015Awesome Golfcourse
The excellent, albeit challenging conditions along with perfect weather and great pace of play resulted in the nicest round I have played anywhere in a very long time.
The courses here are being prepped for a Champions Tour event next week. The greens are smooth as pool tables and stimped out at 12. Lots of blind shots makes your first round here even more challenging. The views from many of the holes are nothing short of breathtaking and the many serious elevation changes add a lot of "wow" factor.
I can't wait to play here again.
Quarry Pines Golf Club
Played On 01/16/2015Nice little course
The fairways had beens scalped and were very thin on grass. the greens are very fast, 10+ on the Stimp meter but overall pretty smooth. The greens like the fairways are very thin and could use more grass. to that end they are watering heavily which made for a lot of muddy lies.
The course is quirky, the back nine having been built in an old quarry. No two holes are alike and each hole offers its own unique challenges. it is not a long track as it measures only 5800 yards from the men's tees but bring lots of golf balls as most folks will find lots of ways to lose them.
The Golf Club at Dove Mountain - Saguaro/Tortolita
Played On 10/07/2014I won't be back.
The course was in poor shape, the greens were a joke - very bumpy and slow. Fairways were inconsistent, a few were decent but most were scalped. No mention was made by the staff that the back nine was cart path only which is a severe problem for my bad knee combined with a cart that died early into the back nine it made for a miserable day. Finally got the cart replaced with just 2 holes to go. If you are hungry or thirsty their offerings are absurd. A can of miller Lite and a small bag of chips cost $8.75!
Golf Club at Vistoso
Played On 08/14/2014Course is in poor condition
I don't know why but the course has deteriorated dramatically of late. The fairways are scalped with large areas of dirt where there should be grass. despite the heavy Monsoon rains the course is drying out and what little grass there is, is very thin. The greens are extremely bumpy and poorly maintained. The free lunch deal was the only bright spot as the post round lunch on the patio was very good. I won't be back until they upgrade their course maintenance and that is going to take a long time (if ever).
Thornapple Creek Golf Club
Played On 06/09/2014Gorgeous!
Very beautiful, challenging course. Lots of dramatic, often blind shots. The rough is deep and water is often in play.
Preserve Golf Course
Played On 04/09/2014"Customer Service" has left the building...
The course is in good shape, the greens are quick and smooth. No Rangers or drink service anywhere on the course. We were lucky in that the course was nearly empty and managed to play in a little over 4.25 hours (we waited on every hole, every shot... but not long). A typical round here is 5 hours plus. Unless you get a great rate from Golf Now the Preserve is simply not worth your money given the aggravation from a course that simply does not want your business.
MountainView Country Club
Played On 02/25/2014Slow play ruins the experience.
Pace of play is a joke. There are no Marshall's on the course. This course should be playable in under 4 hours but never is. No beverage or food service available on the course and the restaurant is now closed indefinitely. Over priced for the poor quality golf experience occasioned by the abysmal pace of play.
SaddleBrooke Ranch Golf Club
Played On 02/06/2014Pace of play sucks
There are no Rangers on the course and pace of play is a joke. Four hours is more than enough time to play this course and a five hour round is ridiculous. Also no cart service for drinks, snacks etc. They are suppose to be on the course Wednesday thru Sunday but just did not bother. Sadly management does not seem to care about a quality golf experience. Green fees are way overpriced considering what you have to put up with. This used to be a great golf experience but they have eliminated the ability to have a quality round by pulling the Rangers from the course.
The Views Golf Club at Oro Valley
Played On 11/20/2013Challenging and well maintained
The Views is one of my favorite courses, tough but fair it offers many opportunities to score but mistakes can be costly. Target golf in the desert, it puts a premium on accuracy. A good score here is particularly satisfying.
My name is Donn Hess, General Manager at Quarry Pines. Thank you for playing Quarry Pines and posting a review of your experience. As a valued customer, we take your review very seriously. We agree our greens currently do not have the visually esthetic look we strive for at our facility. Unfortunately, colder than normal temperatures experienced in early January have forced remaining Bermuda grass into dormancy creating the discoloration and thin visual appearance on our greens. Our maintenance team continues to focus on improving the visual appearance by using fertilizer applications which enhance color while warming soil temperatures in an on going effort to create additional winter grass growth. Warmer weather and continued maintenance practices will improve conditions each week.
