The Metropolitan Golf Links
Played On 09/03/2022Seen better days
Played here before covid; always a busy place in good condition.
Seems like things have been let go, more like a pasture course than I ever remember. Crabgrass is everywhere, and it's hard to find any decent grass in the fairways. The ruff is really ruff, uncut, and overrun with weeds Greens are still good, but the tee boxes are hard as asphalt, and general upkeep and maintenance is nonexistent.
The range is sad, too. The grass-hitting area is beat to death, hard to find any turf worth hitting from.
I suppose if you're into an 18th-century experience, it's really more like original Scottish courses might have been, and if that's your thing, you'll have a great time.
One&Only Palmilla Golf Club - The Arroyo/Mountain Golf Course
Played On 06/17/2021Struggling
So I've played here 25+ times (I have 25 towels and my wife isn't impressed when you do the math on the cost of those towels.) so maybe more than 25 times, because they don't alway give them out!
I love this place, the staff is what keeps me coming back, time and time again, Israel, Caesar, Jose, Issac, Ramon, Daniel-everyone here knows my name, greets me like I matter and cares about my golf experience.
This is the best group in all of Cabo.
That said, I think the place is in a process of transition, Ocean just opened up from a multi month shutdown post covid. It's not pretty. The greens are spongy, slow and furry, however they are healthy and green. They really need a lot of verticutting and rolling to get them back in their pre-covid form of gonad busting speed and readability, not the case right now. Fairways are rough, need water and are sparse, as are the tee grounds. It's just not ready for play, sadly the entire ocean course really needs some dedicated TLC to bring it back to its former glory, and lots of water and sun without golfers to recover.
Arroyo is closed for an extended maintenance.
Mountian is in really good shape, tee to green, and as fun as always to play. waste areas and traps could use some spiffing up as well, no different than Ocean.
Ultimately I think Palmilla is suffering like many of the resorts from lack of water from the effluent plants to fill their reservoirs and water the grounds, it's tough without guest to generate the waste water used to irrigate the courses. much of palmilla went without water last year because of covid, and is paying the price during recovery.
If only for the good of the staff, I'll be back tomorrow and the next day an so on as the place heals post covid and returns to its former glory, my favorite in all of cabo!
Lone Tree Golf Course
Played On 02/15/2020My home course
Yes, I'm a member and yes I play elsewhere, LOTS! 75 + rounds per year.
Ron Parish has taken this sleepy hometown course and made it into a quality destination here in the East Bay. While the likes of Roddy Ranch, Delta View and several Brentwood courses have closed, LoneTree has become a rising star with quality play and excellent amenities.
Last year a new grounds management and superintendent were put in place and have taken Lonetree to the next level. The bunkers have all been redone with new sand and drainage improvements, the greens have all been reseeded to Bermuda, which has made them fast as a pool table, (code for whiners that want shagg carpet greens, skill is now require, read is now required. This isn't like putting on a furry rug made for your grandmother). Best of all the general look and upkeep has taken a huge step forward, all for the better.
I've read some sorely disparaging reviews by what I believe to be rank amateurs that are looking for a gimme or practice course experience. If that's what you want, you have 600+ members that are ready to adamantly disagree with you and have whole heartedly embraced Ron's amazing achievements in making Lonetree that awesome course folks love to play.
That's me, I love this place for the price, the condition, the challenge and most of all the people, it's our Antioch "Cheers" course.
So, be ready to actually have to know how to putt and expect the Bermuda to be fast, true and cantankerous. No "gimmies" here anymore inside the leather.
Thanks Ron and Zach, it just keeps getting better!
Indian Wells Golf Resort - Celebrity Course
Played On 05/11/2019Boutique Couse
Give the score card a really good review before you book this location. While the condition of the course was beyond perfect, it's short. The Celebrity course is a single par 5 single par 3 per nine, and the whites only play 6000 yards.
I normally look at slope and rating as well as the card a lot closer, but having been in a rut and not playing new course lately, I was out of practice at paying attention.
The range is nice off the grass and piles of balls at the tee, excellent warm up and excellent practice facility.
Definably narrow, you won't be scoring spraying it off the tee and expect to score . if you're longer than 220 off the tee, play the tips. Greens are brutal tough, 14 plus stimp!
Carts are a bit dodgy, I was given a half dead cart that starting failing half way through the front nine, and had issues climbing hills. Called the pro shop for a replacement that never found me. That and the onboard ball and club scrubber was dry because the drain plug was gone, and the cooler was empty on a 93º day.
Lastly, this is a resort facility, not a TPC experience by any stretch. LOTS of bling LOTS of big money catering going on here. Also, plenty of tour-wanna-bees that won't let you play through even if you ask! Twosomes that play slower the foursomes. sooooo slow for a short course, should be round in 3 hours--you'll be lucky finish in 5!
The huge redeeming quality of this location is the on course staff. The starters and marshals are amazing folks that really care about your experience and making it as excellent as possible.
Lone Tree Golf Course
Played On 05/04/2019My Cheers Course
Lone Tree is the jewel of Antioch, a shining gem in a town that just can't get its act together.
Ron and his staff have toiled over the last 3 years to really make this course MUCH BETTER. They set out to replace the grass on the greens with a special Bermuda that on the 2 year old greens are flat and fast. Some of the first years greens like 9 are struggling, but Ron's staff is on it, and doing their best with Mother Nature to bring them around. Traps are hit or miss some are excellent some are hard pack, but like many things at Lone Tree, Ron's getting it done.
For the money , this place is a gift! I play here several times a week. It's close, afternoon pace is fast, I've played dozens of 2.5 hours rounds without even working hard.
This ain't pebble, and never will be, but it is a fantastic local course with it highs and lows. Accept it for what it is and you're ALWAYS have a great round,
I sure do!
The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
Played On 09/30/2015BAYONET
Great track, would play again in a heart beat--Played mid-day, a bit slow at times, on on the front, but finished the back under 2 hrs. if you're not straight or on the green stuff, ugh, strokes will add up in a big hurry.
Excellent range and practice facilities, multiple chipping and putting choices and a normally grass tee area on the range. They were on matts this day, but they're using the latest design turf and it's hard to tell its a matt.
Greens are brutally challenging and will bring you to your knees. They seem to be using that new GMO grass that doesn't show ball marks, like familiar strains of old that nick-up easily. The entire courses seems hand manicured. The vistas are amazing.
Staff is hit or miss, either super friendly, professional and helpful, which is case for the most part, or concept-less of what customer service..
GreyStone Golf Club
Played On 05/07/2015A very challenging course in an amazingly beautiful setting.
Well worth the drive from Nashville. Beautiful country setting and an amazing layout. The course is perfectly kept. Unless your driver is working well, bring plenty of balls, forgiveness is no part of this track. The greens are humbling fast and cleverly sloped, they require the utmost respect. a six inch miss can quickly turn into a a 20 foot next attempt, brutal-Hitting the green means nothing, you still have to put! I think the slope rating is 10 points low. Shot placement is essential.
Would definitely return.
One note, if you're following a higher handicap group, play will slow if their shots start leaving the fairway or the short rough, and while much of the course is in play, the edge of the woods and long grasses eat balls like hungry dogs after kibble.
Verde River Golf & Social Club

Hard times has it's benefits.
Vista Verde was built as mentioned elsewhere during the real estate boom with expense home sites all around. The development went bust in 07 with only a hand full of homes, but the golf course was completed and has become a destination in the higher elevations of the north east valley above McDowell Mountains. The views are amazing in every direction and when the wind isn't blowing, it's so quiet, your ears ring. It may be about to change, the property is in the process of being sold to a new developer, and the original plan to build high end housing around could resume in the not to distant future, so don't delay!
Conditions are excellent, and perfectly manicured. The greens are uniformly green and cut tight, but are a little course giving the ball a tendency to bounce a bit. Some of the sand is a bit hard packed as well, but not a detractor.
The track is challenging but fair, with a 600 yard par 5 #17 from the tips to test the longest of the long ball hitters. No goofy boutique holes, or funky hazards. Not much water either, but brutally cruel bunker placement both along the fairways and around the greens force well thought club selection and shot placement. Most greens, while not elevated per say, are raised and penalize lazy play. Watch for the washes that cross the fairways, their placement requires thought off the tee as well.
Staff is top notch, the range excellent, balls are included with your round. Putting, chipping and sand practice areas are great as well.
There are no facilities on site at all and no club house. Free bottled water is provided in an iced cooler on your cart, there is no water otherwise on the coarse and you can reload on the turn. A fairly well stocked beverage cart circulates as well.
TPC Scottsdale - The Stadium Course
Played On 8/30/2013Wow!
Went for the Twilight rate, because I'm a cheap bugger.
All the rain we've had has left the course in phenomenal condition, and if you can believe it, the, Champions course is even better despite the Stadium being closed all of July.
The staff rocks to the max--Each staff member makes you feel like you own the course and you are the reason they are there. AMAZING!
The practice facility rocks to the max
The entire experience rocked to the max AND, at $48 bucks, how do you go wrong?
The staff at both places will tell you the Champions is tougher, and having played there repeatedly, Stadium has it's challenges, but it is unquestionably easier to score here over Champions.
TPC Scottsdale - The Stadium Course
Played On 8/29/2013$35 Play all day. . .
I've played here repeatedly and love this course. It's really challenging if your game is off and rewarding if your game is on.
The staff rocks, it's all about you, you are their guest and it's clear that is the most important part of why they are there. The place could be a burned out weed patch and the staff's attitude and concern about your experience would make up for any perceived deficiency.
I had a gift given to me by the starter, I played the first tee time of the morning out as a single, a two and a half hour round on the most pristinely manicured and perfectly prepared golf course I've ever seen. It was like the place was my own private course. Amazing. Unlike many places where you can "sneak out" ahead of the first tee time of the morning, that isn't an option here. If you can buy that first slot, the only folks ahead of you will be the greenskeeper setting the new hole for the day and the grounds crew. The course will seem like it was prepared just for you and your group.
For what it's worth, I've had staff members at both courses tell me they find the Champions to be a tougher track. I played Stadium today and I believe they're in a general sense correct. Tee shot placement at Stadium is tighter than Champions, but overall shot placement at Champions is far less forgiving than Stadium. Play both and find out for yourself!
The weekday $35 all you can play deal that ends the 12th of September is the best value in the valley. This visit was a 36 hole play day.
Just like Stadium, the practice facilities here are amazing, the range is precisely mark, the tee ground is like carpet, the chipping, putting and sand practice areas are flawless.
TPC is all about golf and the golfer. Make time to play here.
Dove Valley Ranch Golf Club
Played On 8/26/2013A lot of potential, BUT. . .
I've played here repeatedly because it's close, but unfortunately many of the staff are a real HUGE turn off. Billy and a couple of the guys out front at the bag drop are super great. They're all about being gracious host, but the rest of the bunch are a dower lot, you as a patron, are without question, wasting their time even in the cantina and on the beverage cart, you're wasting their time. Additionally, there seems to be a gross ambiguity with the rates and policy. One guys at the desk says walkups are x, then next says they're x+200 and the next says no walkups. Left and right hand haven't a clue as to what they're selling, and management doesn't really seem to care. Kind of a slap in the face to the good folks that I mentioned above that are trying really hard to make Dove Valley a top choice for golf.
The course can be challenging, although the back nine is somewhat of a boutique course slightly similar to raunch-o yesterday in cave creek which is a one time exercise in ball mining and straight short shots.
The front nine at Dove Valley is a really nice track, the back requires patiences or beer or both. Single or foursome, the back two solid hours to play the back. Ball mining can be as prevalent as golfing on the back, especially if you can't hit straight. The coyotes that wander across the fairways alone are worth the visit. (mainly a few hours before sunset) Over all, the course is very well maintained, and post overseed, it's really plush and and green. The greens are quick and tricky, but unfortunately the members don't carry ball mark tools, or if they do, they don't use them, or believe mark repair is above them and the grounds keepers will fix them.
The practice facility absolutely rocks, and then some. An excellent putting, chipping and sand practice area and a very nicely marked and maintained range. Post overseed, it's even better, well worth the visit. The range card is the best value in the valley--15 60 ball bags for 100 bucks. An excellent value.
Despite my disdain for the dismissive attitude by a majority of the staff, a fact that becomes very evident, especially after you play either or both of the TPC courses in Scottsdale, where every guest is treated like a pro, for now, unless someone there reads this and I'm banned, I'll continue to golf at Dove Valley. Kind of like cutting off your nose to spite your face, again, because it's close, and well, Billy makes me laugh!
Tatum Ranch Golf Club
Played On 2/7/2013Very busy in season, Beautiful property-Forgiving
An enjoyable round, a very walkable course green to tee, clearly designed for the Seasonal visitor to have a "good and easy game". Very forgiving wide fairways and minimal sand with water in play only on #7. Approaches aren't the most challenging, but #9 really shines. #5 is well chosen as number one handicap hole, almost out of place compared to the mediocrity of the rest of the course. Sand traps tended to be hard pan on the bottom. The slope is over rated.
Overall a nice coarse, but like many heavily played courses, the greens take a beating form discourteous wannabe golfers that have no concept of ball mark repair and respect for the course. Unfortunately, this isn't a problem exclusive to Tatum Ranch. Daytime play is slow and heavy, 4.5-5 hours is the norm unless you're out last for the afternoon and play the front twice, easily sub 3.5 hours for 4 on carts or sub 3 hours for 2 on carts.
Staff was generally friendly and helpful.
The Practice facility is excellent which includes a grass range, two putting greens, as well as a green for chipping and bunker practice.
PS--There is no convenient access to the pro shop through the front of the club house as it also houses a bar and restaurant, the pro shop is actually on the course side of the restaurant. One needs to walk to the end of the parking lot and circumnavigate the restaurant to access checkin and the starter.
Dove Valley Ranch Golf Club
Played On 1/14/2013Bring extra balls and study the back nine layout
The course is meticulously maintained and the greens put fast and true. Sand and water are appropriately placed. The front nine is open, but requires good shot placement and club selection to score. The back nine is another story. Bring plenty of balls and leave your driver and ego in the bag. Several of the holes have split fairways that require precision placement shots to move from the first fairway to the second and approach to the green. 18 is a beautiful finishing hole, unless you slice!
GPS mapping is spot on.
Excellent practice facility with sand, chipping and putting adjacent to the grass range.
