Well maintained, narrow fairways

John at the front desk was friendly and helpful. The groundskeepers were attending to leaves on the course and were cooperative when we were playing on the holes that they were working on.
There are four holes that are near water hazards. If I had not been striking the ball so well, it would have been moderate course difficulty.
Fairways were honest and manicured. Hitting into the rough was not the end of the world, as the grass was trimmed well and the turf was in good shape.
We used pull carts which had velcro that needed replacement. But the carts worked fine and the velcro held.
You can tell when the course is maintained with pride. This course is. The greens are very well manicured, although the fairways are relatively narrow in placed.
With the perfect weather, the course was crowded. The pace of play was not horrible, but it was slow. We were following a foursome with two on cart and two on foot. There was a twosome behind us on a cart. We finished in 2.5 hours. With no one in front of us, we would normally be through in just over two hours.
We had a great time playing Rob Roy. Thanks to the staff!

The back nine was more challenging

I play infrequently, but this was the nicest course that I have played out of the six outings this year. My brother was visiting from Phoenix, so this was a nice surprise for him.
The carts are new and work great, although they do not have the GPS distance finders that Talking Stick had in Scottsdale.
The grounds crew at Orchard Valley does an excellent job. It was a pleasure to view the fairways. Unlike some courses, there are still well-maintained sand bunkers to add intrigue to the game.
I wish some of the drains would have had distance markings on them. I liked the flowers near some of the tee boxes. At the turn, the ladies in the clubhouse were charming. I paid $4 for an all beef hot dog.
There is a lot of water (hazards) on the back nine. It was beautiful, though. Tons of egrets and turtles in the lake.
Riley was driving the drink cart. She was nice and pleasant to speak with. Good luck at Western Illinois, Riley!
Orchard Valley may be one of the nicest courses in the area. Great job, guys!

Hazards make life interesting

The water in the water dispensers was cold. Although the weather was forecast to be hot, a nice breeze and good shade made the outing perfect.
Some courses have eliminated many hazards. Philips Park still has plenty of sand traps and water hazards.
There were a few holes with narrow fairways, but many with wide approaches.
I think it was 14 that had a wide approach, but I sliced two drives to the right, into the fesque.
The greens played fast and the greens were shapely without being comical.

Fast Greens, Bug Spray helps

The course is well maintained and holds some challenges. There is a sign that says, "Don't spray mosquito repellent over grass."
With fall leaves coming down, it was an exercise to find a few of the balls. At the turn, the staff at the lunch room was friendly and the hot dog was good.
I was hitting my drives well, but managed to end up in the sand traps on five occasions. I need to golf more!
We started at 2:26 pm. With the sun high in the sky and with the openness of the front nine, the mosquitoes were not too bad. The course is very natural and we saw frogs and critters in the ponds and creek.
The sun was getting low by the time we got to 13 and 14. With the breeze held out by trees, the mosquitoes were evident. Spray helped.
At 18, it helps to have a cart. We were walking. If we had a cart, we could have driven forward a distance and had a peek. But from the tee, you can't really make out the shape of the fairway. They do have a flag in the middle of the fairway, which was a good target. Since we were walking, we were a little tired and did not take the time to walk forward and look at the fairway before teeing off.
