Oakcreek Country Club
Played On 09/24/2018Great views, fine golf vcourse
Oak Creek boasts great views of Red Rocks, well manicured greens and a challenging but fair layout. Carts include GPS, always a treat especially when playing a course for the first time. Greens rolled true and fairly fast but held approach shots extremely well. Complimentary range balls always appreciated Traps could use softer sand as opposed to the very firm grainy dirt-like substance... only downside.
Great Rock Golf Club
Played On 05/24/2017Great Rock 5-24-17
I first played here a few years ago, loved the layout and design but felt the course could use some TLC. Last year, tried it again and felt that it had gone further downhill, w/ big bucks being put into restaurant, clubhouse, bathrooms, etc. and not nearly enough in course maintenance. This year, I had read some solid reviews for Great Rock recently and decidied to give it another shot.
Greens had been aerated in early May and will need another week or two to smooth out and speed up. But seems that, with the exception of the first green which has long been a problem, the greens are in decent shape and will likely get a little better. The layout and design is as I remember, very entertaining and challenging. Not a course to walk, but u will enjoy the elevation changes while driving ur cart. Fairways in fairly good shape, but quality of rough was inconsistent... in some cases, too unkempt and gnarly even just off the fairway, and then bare spots in other places. The value remains pretty high for what they charge, but a little more TLC and this place could be excellent. Hopefully that's their direction this season.
Pine Hills Country Club
Played On 04/27/2017Pine Hills Late April
It had been about 12 years since I played there, went there 4-27 for a change of scenery. Practice facilities are solid (Range, putting green, chipping area) Played the white tees, but the scorecard is confusing, with two different holes showing Par4/3 and Par5/4 options, with different distances, yet the "total" distance is NOT variable, and there is only one Rating/Slope (72.0 127 on the card, but 72 129 is what shows up when u post online). There is a free course yardage book in the pro shop, with hole pictures and descriptions which I found very helpful.
As for the course itself, the layout is fine. A mix of hole types, inc doglegs, some elevation changes, well placed ponds, etc. Despite the name, not very hilly and walk-able tee to green. But distances between greens and tees are often a hike, and #9 green to #10 tee is a long walk past practice facilities and parking lot. As for course conditioning, I thought there were too many bare areas off the fairways, leading to shots off dirt/hardpan. And I caught the course at a bad time, with greens that had recently been aerated (LARGE plugs) and sanded, and not mowed or rolled. So slow and bumpy! No advance notice of that. Will give it another shot later in the season.
Assuming the greens round into form, a fair test and good value. Nice bar w/ tons of TVs and good food/tap beers in the Clubhouse for post-round bet settling.
Oaks at Palm-Aire Country Club
Played On 02/16/2017Oaks on 2-16
The Oaks has a nice design... as u would expect from a Fazio designed course. Water lurks but u only get wet with bad shots that deserve the penalty. Greens are pretty good. But the course needs a little more TLC. Tee boxes are uneven and not well mowed. And lies, in general, are super tight. Not an issue so much from fairways or rough on full shots, but annoying for ball to be sitting on virtual hardpan around the greens, making for challenging wedge play.
The Vineyards Golf Club
Played On 08/27/2016First time at The Vineyards
I was very impressed with the condition of the course, especially given the grueling hot weather we had gone thru prior to my playing. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were all in gorgeous condition, best I have played on the East End. Facilities are top shelf, staff is friendly and helpful. The course plays to a Par 70... but seems short even for that. Only one "long" par 4 over 400 yards, the last hole (do not miss that green left). And every hole seemed to be about 10 yards shorter than the distance on the card... i think they could have stretched it out a bit more. But conditioning off the charts good, greens are well protected, and u will enjoy this shot maker's track, for sure.
Excellent! Thanks so much for leaving this detailed review and for playing The Vineyards for your first time. We do hope to see you again real soon.
