One of the top munis in the area

I believe that every golfer in the Louisville area should play Nevel Meade at least once a year. It’s my favorite course in the area outside the top 4 or 5 private courses.
It is an incredible Smyers design featuring various types of holes, sizable elevation changes on almost every hole, contoured greens, and a rare taste of bent fairways to the region. It is a challenging course due to its large elevation changes, including blind tee shots on multiple holes, contoured greens, large bunkering, elevated greens, penalizing hay grasses for big misses, and wind exposure due to no trees on the course. It includes tough half par holes and very scoreable holes including the fun 6th and 16th, and joke of a par 5 18th.
Hard course to walk, golf carts contain GPS, definitely worth a visit at least once a year.

Fun, Challenging layout, great value, questionable course conditions

Play here quite often, a very convenient public course. Typically can just show up and get a tee time if playing in the afternoon, very cheap, and a testing layout.
The course conditions are very subject to the weather, during a week a dry wheat we the zoysia fairways became almost hitting off dirt. I also have played it in very good conditions. Greens always roll very smooth but slow and with little to no movement. Bunkers are in play shape, biggest problem is a lack of raking by customers.
Very nice layout, most holes have some feature that makes them unique. All par 5s are able to hold up pretty fairly because they have have doglegs and water hazards. The second is hard to reach because the approach is back uphill and the shot needs to carry a cluster of tallish trees. The ninth hole doglegs back right hard on the tee shot, so ones distance to always much less on the tee shot because it needs to fade around a Forrest of trees that comes right up to the fairway on the right side, easy place to lose a ball. 16 is definitely reachable with a good tee shot, but it is a forced carry over a creek down the hill. 18 is very tough to reach if you are not able to draw your driver down the center of the fairway. Pars 3s are just whatever barring the 7th, a difficult 220 downhill par 3 with water long. You have to be thinking from the first hole on, as a water ditch runs across the fairway in the middle of most players drive ranges. 8 is a fun short par 4 with water right on the tee ball, and an elevated green. The par 4 on the back are all difficult and interesting, particularly the 15th which plays over a pond on the approach. The course plays fairly long, but is only difficult because it is so easy to lose a golf ball as there is lots of water, and there is Forrest like tree clusters that line so many of the holes just gobbling up weren’t shots. This become frustrating if you keep losing balls, but it is a good test and good value.

All depends on expectations

I give the course two stars because honestly it’s not a great golf course for anybody who plays private courses or upper class public courses, but it is a good course for certain people. It’s a good golf course for beginner golfers it’s not very penal. There are few water hazards, basically no rough, flat slow greens that roll true, and hardly any bunkers. However on the back side the holes are surrounded in an arena of Forrest, that if hit into will be a lost ball.
It isn’t conditioned overly well, as the tee boxes are half dirt boxes, the few bunkers have no sand and have grass growing out of them, and the dead grass clippings are left on all over the rough.
However the course is a great value, the cheapest 18 holes in the city, and if one is looking to have fun and not be pushed by advanced golfers behind them, then this golf course does it’s job.
There are some fun holes, the 8th is a wedge par 3 over a tiny pond, and the 15th is a long par 4 with a forced carry over a pond. Back nine is much tougher with more area to lose balls so the hitting the fairly large short grass is imperative.
Lastly, if you come to long run expecting a championship course you will be disappointed, but if one expects any easier course to learn how to play the game at their pace then Long Run is a perfect course.

Fun, Fast practice course

This course is a great practice course, it is always open, usually you’ll be the only person on it, it’s easily walkable, and can be played in under 90 minutes easily. It has a great design because it has such varying yardages, that it requires one to have to hit most of their clubs in their bag. Just because it’s short doesn’t make it easy, it’s not overly penal, but some of the smallest putting surfaces I have ever seen. I think the green at 7 has got to set a record for how small it is. There is a number of lengthy par 3s that may require long irons for some. Greens roll much slower than the big course and rough is way more forgiving. Great quick practice 9 holes for members.
