Great course, lousy pace of play

Two of my friends played here for a morning round and had a second round scheduled for another course in Bend. Remembering they have a replay rate I asked if we could get a second time that day. They said sure and booked us 5 hours after our start time. They said with the new GPS systems they have that the pace of play was a lot faster. The GPS are great and they tell you when you are behind pace, but they can’t make you play faster. We say a marshall exactly one time during the round, at the turn, when he told us to relax and enjoy the sun despite being 17 minutes behind pace (for a 4.5 hour round!!!). We were stuck behind 4 groups of foursomes who did not appear to play much golf and were playing a scramble it appeared. While I can’t say for sure, I did not get the impression the Marshall was asking them to to hurry up. We wound up playing in just over 5 hours and had to rush to the pro shop to pay for our second round and go out. There was a fivesome in the first fairway and we were told it was smooth sailing once we got through them. When we got to the second tee there were 4 groups on the hold. We wound up playing that hole as an eightsome in order to try to see if we could get past them. When we got to #3 there was a twosome holding us up. And all we could see in front of them was group after group. I felt like the pro shop should have been honest with us about how busy the course was at that time. We played 36 at two other courses in the area and never had any trouble like this. The only saving grace is they refunded me the greens fee when we quit after #2. The impression I got is that they care about the greens fees and not about the experience of the non-member or someone who is not staying on site. I love the course, but I doubt I will be back.

Decent Bang for the Buck

I'd like to give it a 3.5, but I settled on 4 stars. The gentleman in the shop (I wish I could remember his name) was great. I had forgotten my umbrella at home in Oregon and he found one for me to use. The weather was wet, so I was by myself due to low turnout.

The course does not drain well, particularly the back nine, which is flat. I teed off the back first and it was wet in spots. The greens were in good shape however. The back nine is pretty boring. You basically play the same style hole each time - straight and tree lined. Not much variety.

The front nine is pretty good. A LOT more variety and fun to play.

Given the rain overnight I wasn't surprised by the course conditions. It was still playable and I didn't have any plugged lies. The greens were good. I didn't have to fix many ballmarks, which is surprising for a public course. I did notice the bunkers were not raked very often, which you sadly see from lazy golfers.

The value was great. I think I paid $40 for walking 18, renting a rickshaw, and a small bucket of balls.

Not Bad

I played this course for the first time while on vacation. Given the time of year the course was in pretty decent condition, though far from pristine. The greens were in good shape, which is the most important to me. I played on a cold and windy day, but no rain. I rode in a cart given it was 90 degrees and rain was in the forecast. I was hoping to speed around since hardly anyone was on the course.

I played the front nine with a member and we played in about 80 minutes. The course has some challenging holes and makes you think off the tee. Definitely helps to have a yardage book or a member with you as there are some weird tee shots.

My partner quit at the turn and I played the back alone. I encountered two groups of twosomes walking and they let me play right through. However, on #15 I caught up to three women who were walking. It is a par 5, so I waited on my tee shot, second shot, and approach. The next hole is a par 3 and I drove up to the tee as they were teeing off. They never ONCE offered to let me play through. I almost drove around them, but figured I paid to play and they should let me go through on 16. Nope. Surely they'll let me play through on 17. Nope. I waited on them for 4 holes without them ever seeming to consider letting me play through. I know singles don't always get the benefit, but when that single is in a cart on a day with few golfers, let them through! I played the first 14 holes in just under 2 hours and took me over an hour to finish the last 4 holes. By myself. In a cart.

Because of this, I don't think I would go back.
