Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links
Played On 12/05/2020Great Course but in danger
Beautiful layout. Conditions good. Greens were slow, uneven, and patchy. The course has tremendous potential.
The main problem is what appears to be a group of local kids in their early 20s.We'd read a previous review where kids were blocking up traffic and blasting loud music. We ran into obviously the same group. We could hear the music from adjacent holes. Caught up with them on 16. Became clear they didn't care about their pace of play or the loud yelling and music as it could possibly distract others. There were five in their group!! In four carts. The last three holes took over an hour. On 18, they split up to avoid being caught. Could clearly hear every word the belted out from the clubhouse steps all the way on the tee.
7 Lakes Golf Club
Played On 08/17/2017True test
Fantastic layout. This course challenges, but isn't unfair. The condition was very nice. The greens were in good shape, but they are about to give them a work over so they were a little slow.
This course fits into the landscape effortlessly. It flows up and down hills, often times in just one hole, and creates interesting shot options with small, multi-tiered greens. Water comes into play on the back nine as well as some serious up hill shots. The greens are severely elevated on a few holes and make approach shots difficult.
The course is a beauty. Downhill, bending holes look glorious late in the day. The water holes are the stuff of postcards.
The pro in the shop, Mike Whitley, was super friendly. We stopped by to take a look at the course, as we had never played it and our golf package needed to be altered. One course on our package wasn't in good shape, so they offered us a chance at 7 Lakes. Mike was very welcoming and let us take a cart and view a few holes. He was super laid back, helped us with tee times, and just made the golf/pro shop atmosphere what it should be; a place where we relate to the course, our game, and each other.
Country Club of Whispering Pines - Pines Course
Played On 08/15/2017Does the job
Good course. Long. Was hitting everything I had all day long. Can be hilly. Course design flows with the land very well. Greens are turtled a bit and are difficult to hold. They are not too fast and have a good roll. Putts go straighter than they appear.
Two par 5's on the course are demonic. Truly difficult, long, challenging, creations of sadism. Still, even though it's tough to score on them, they are majestic to see.
Needs more amenities and culture around the clubhouse. Has the feel of a real regulars course. Older crowd. But, don't be fooled, they play fast.
Foxfire Resort & Golf Club - Red Fox Course
Played On 08/14/2017Memories
One: The tees, fairways, and greens are in decent shape for the most part. The value and pace is hard to beat.
Two: I remember Foxfire from the '80's and it's hard not to feel a bit sad. I heard it's made a rebound recently or is making a rebound, but it is not the course it was, at the moment, or the course and resort it could be. The tees, while decent, often had debris strewn over it. The greens had many dead spots, and the sand traps are severely neglected.
The layout for this course is a gem. It is a very challenging day out. It's long; longer than it seems or reads. It makes you bend the ball every which way or pay the price.
The resort was a great getaway. The cottages they had were cozy and the atmosphere the I remember has been cut down with the many pines that used to watch over the whole community. I do hope it hangs in there and makes a comeback. Give the course a shot~~
Sprain Lake Golf Course
Played On 07/30/2017Construction
Have played Sprain many times. They've always had some construction, but this year they have major renovations all over the course. They have reduced the fees and their twilight prices are the best you'll find right now. It's worth the cost. The course has some nice holes. At times, it also has a laid back atmosphere. That cuts both ways, sometimes. While we often show up and play with two and don't have to worry about too much traffic, you'll also see kids in carts dart in front of you right before you hit a shot. The greens can be tricky. The temp greens are some of the worst I've seen. When it is at %100, it's a fun course. Right now, it can be frustrating if you are looking to score.
Garrison Golf Club
Played On 07/10/2017Beautiful Views
Garrison is a hilly course. The views make the trip up there worth it. Some holes are challenging and some lack imagination. The front nine uses the landscape very well and the back nine seems more put together like pieces of a puzzle. That is not to say there aren't some nice holes on the back. The par 3's are beautiful. The greens could be misleading. I putted up near the hole and it stopped briefly, before making a 90 degree turn to the left and picked up speed and rolled right off the green. Length will help you on this course. It's a fun day out.
Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club
Played On 11/21/2016A beast
Just when you think you might be in good shape on a hole, the greens bite you straight in the rump.
I had two inch roll outs on my driver and 15 yard roll outs on my wedge shots. I putted off the green more than once. Brutal stuff.
The place is gorgeous and just about as cozy as it gets. The starter is super and the staff is friendly.
Bring your A game.
Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club
Played On 11/20/2016My new place
Mid-Pines has a lot going for it. The Inn is classic and expansive. The staff is super nice. The starter is a real laid back, funny, and flexible guy.
Tons of maintenance folks are out in the mornings like bees to get the course ready for the day.
The course is a real challenge. The greens are the real killers. They are turtle backed and very unforgiving. Hard as a rock and difficult to read, they played tricks on my all day.
Visually, it is a gorgeous layout. It blends right in with the natural surroundings as if it was made to be there.
Maple Moor Golf Course
Played On 11/13/201618 at Twilight
Have played this course many times. The greens were harder and faster today than I've ever seen them. The course was in good condition. The rough was uneven and very thick in spots, but the biggest problem were the leaves. Couldn't find several balls that actually landed in fairways only to roll off into the rough and under blankets of leaves.
Some holes are very easy, while some are very challenging. When the greens are fast, the slope in the greens make putting quite difficult, especially on the back nine.
Great deal here and not overcrowded. The pizza there on site is the best around!!
