Great Course but play the Senior Tees

Being a senior I usually try and play the tees that are about 6,000 yards and this one is almost 6,200 from the white tees. However I forgot to look at the slope which is 135 from those tees. It was a fairly windy day and I should have played from the Green Tees which is 5,620 but a slope of 130. We were hitting many hybrids into greens and a few of the par 4’s played like short par 5’s. The course is an interesting but very challenging layout which is reflected in the slope. The next time I play this will be much more fun from the green tees. The greens and fairways were in great shape but a few tees were brown with not much green grass on them. Sand in bunkers was good as well. Some very interesting bulkheaded greens surrounded by water and tight fairways that were well trapped with water. Made for a tough 94 and I have a 14 handicap. We didn’t understand why there was no seed mixture on the cart to help repair our divots because we like to repair extra ball marks on greens and always repair our divots. Will definitely play this course again and thought it was a good value.

Great Tillinghast Layout

They have put a massive amount of work and money into this golf course over the past couple years which included improving the drainage, renovation of some greens, rebuilding many sand traps, resoding some fairways and removing some trees. The work is ongoing and there are two temporary greens currently. However it is obvious when they open those two greens and the grass starts growing again, the fairways and greens will be in great shape and this course will be fantastic. The greens are bent grass and in good shape after a tough winter. This is a very interesting and very playable course that has some challenging holes. I never lost a ball during the entire round today. The pace of play was excellent and I will be playing here often this season. The only reason it wasn’t 5 stars was because there were two temporary greens.

Definitely Exceeded Expectations

This is my third trip to Myrtle Beach and have always wanted to play The Dunes because of its stellar reputation but this was the first time we could get on there. I had very high expectations and they were exceeded. I am a big fan of Robert Trent Jones golf courses and play Hominy Hill regularly at my home in New Jersey. This one is a gem with almost every single hole being just beautiful looking out from each tee. And there are some really unique holes and the course remains very playable with wide enough fairways and many large and deep sand traps around the greens. The course was in perfect condition more like a private course with the tees in great shape as well as the fairways where they had over seeded with rye grass so they were lush and green. The greens were some of the best if not the best I have ever played on. Very fast and rolled beautifully and the pro shop said they measured 11.5 on the stemp meter. I have to mention that they had many, many sand traps but each and every one was edged and maintained perfectly and had plenty of fluffy sand to give you an excellent chance of a good result near the pin. I would say these were the best maintained sand traps I have seen because of the consistency across all the traps I was in and they were all perfectly raked. We saw a crew of about 6 guys out there raking and maintaining the traps while we were playing. The pace of play was outstanding as the course was not crowded and we played 18 holes in 3.5 hours. I would play this again for sure the next time I am in Myrtle Beach and thought the greens fee was a good value considering the beautiful layout and the pristine condition.

Course Should Be Closed

Greens keeper lost 15 out of 18 tees so you had to tee off on temporary tees in front of the most forward tee. This causes the course to play ridiculously short and you are teeing off in the rough. If this were a private course the greens keeper would be looking for another job. Some fairways were also dead as well but greens were very good. Really a shame to see a very good layout in terrible shape. The county should warn you of these terrible conditions but they don’t and aren’t discounting the greens fees. Wait until next spring when the grass on the tees should be back and open.

Great Course Beyond Expectations

I was a guest of a member and this was my first time playing this great layout. I have known several members over the years who planned to get me out here but it never happened until this year. This course always had a great reputation in Monmouth County and it was even better than my expectations. Very interesting layout with many elevation changes and rolling terrain. Some water holes with streams across fairways and a couple of ponds in front of greens. Challenging but a very fair and playable golf course that was a lot of fun to play. The course was in pristine shape with perfect tees and fairways and fast greens that rolled perfectly. This was August when many courses in the area have struggled with fungus on tees and fairways from the extreme humidity but this greens keeper maintained excellent conditions. The staff was very welcoming and friendly and we had a good caddy. Great poolside bar overlooking the 9th and 18th holes to have a beer and burger after your round. This country club also has an incredible pool complex, beautiful clubhouse and tennis courts but if golf is your primary focus you will really enjoy this club.
