Seen better days

I’ve played all three 18 hole courses at Jekyll Island over the last forty years multiple times. This complex of public courses used to be a bargain but my return to play Indian Mounds this year was a disappointment to say the least. The corse layout is interesting enough but the course conditions were unacceptable. Mid June should be the time of year when the course is in top shape but instead we found bare patches on tees & fairways & the putting greens were like
Corduroy. I didn’t ask staff if the greens had recently been aerated or had other work done on them but in any case the greens were close to being unputtable. The worst lack of maintenance however were the conditions of the bunkers. Now to be fair, they had a significant amount of rain over the previous days but the compacted sand conditions that we encountered were not due to that, they were mostly like concrete. After being in a couple traps, I even stopped trying to rake out my footsteps since they left almost no indentions in the compacted sand to begin with & to get the tines of the rake to penetrate into the sand was more work than it was worth. All of the bunkers need a deep rototlling for a start to recover them, totally unacceptable. I won’t be back until management gets their act together.

Most Excellent

Haven't played Stonewall Golf Course since I moved from the area 9 years ago. It was one of the best courses in the area back then & in 2023 still is one o0f the best courses in the area. lots of beautiful views of Lake Manassas. Conditions were just fine. It's just too bad that the golfers who play the course don't take the effort to repair their divots & ball marks on the greens.

Fantastic desert course

First day that Devil’s Claw course was opened after overseeding & redoing the sand traps. The course, as anticipated, was in perfect condition. The sand traps had loose sand at least six inches deep in all of the bunkers. The only thing that I could find fault with was that their large putting green at the clubhouse was kind of burnt out and fast compared to the actual course greens that were lush and not tightly cut. Therefore it took a few holes to determine the actual speed of the greens.

A gem on St. Simons Island

Beautiful course with a layout that will test your shot making ability. Be sure to select the correct tees since there are plenty of tee shots that require substantial carry over lagoons or salt marshes. The greens were in good shape for Feb. & are very undulating, therefore creating various cup positions that you must consider when hitting your approach shots. Just reaching the greens here in regulation won’t guarantee a par if your ball wnds up out of position on an unfavorable poetion of the putting surface. This course requires a round or two just to get to know it since there are many doglegs that keep the pin hidden until after hitting your tee shot.
