Mistwood Golf Course

This course is probably the most well thought out layout (from each tee box) I've played in the Chicago area.
If you choose the correct tee box for your length off the tee you'll find traps, mounds, fescue, water and doglegs at just the correct distances to force you to use every club in your bag and to think about what club to hit off the tee and what type of shape you want to hit (if you're able). When you succeed with the correct choice off the tee and find yourself in the fairway you'll be rewarded with a great look at birdie with a variance of your short or mid-irons. You'll also have an opportunity to drive a green or two on a par 4 (like they do on TV) and may also have chance at putting for an eagle on a shorter par 5. How much fun is THAT?
The greens are not overly undulating. However they are subtly sloped so you need to take a good look at the entire slope of the area around each green so you're not fooled by what looks level but really isn't.
That being said, the only complaint I have is the shocking amount of pockmarks on these greens. Somebody needs to get on the players here to fix your ball marks. Or get some help for the greenskeeper to keep up with the damage being done to these beautiful greens.
The carts here have a great GPS system so you won't have any blind shots or surprises in distance to obstacles or hazards.
The practice facility is 5 Star quality but the main clubhouse is still being built. It looks like it's going to be one beautiful clubhouse too.

It's cart path only until next year to give the new fairways a chance to take hold and fill in. Actually I was amazed at how lush 90% of the fairways and greens were for being less than a year old. There's still a few bare areas which is to be expected but you can tell it's being addressed.
The layout has been toughened up by totally changing the layout of the 1st hole and the first 5 holes on the back 9 along with 17 and 18.
The pace of play here is usually pretty slow before noon. MP is a bedroom community and this course has a tremendously faithful retiree following. So it's usually quite full at the early tee times.
My only complaint and the reason I won't give it 5 Stars is this. It's a short course squeezed into a residential neighborhood. 6305 from the back tees. 5955 from the next set of tees. Unfortunately from this 2nd set of tees there are 3 par 4's at 420 - 430 yards. That's unreachable in two for most of the players that play from this distance. The reason they play from 6000 and under is usually they're short off the tee. Someone please tell me what PGA course is set up where some of the shorter pros can't reach every par 4 in two. Answer: There are none. So why slow your course down by forcing players to play three par 4's like they're par 5's? I guess they could play down to the next tees but they're considerably shorter, 5235. Why not just make them par 5's?
The greens are very quick, smooth and well maintained as is the entire course in general. The practice facility is first rate as is the bar and restaurant which has a great big veranda overlooking the practice greens.
Overall a fun and challenging course to play. I'll be keeping it in my yearly rotation of courses I play.
