Fantastic Public Course

Not quite a 5 star course but a solid 4.25. Would definitely play it again if I was in the area. Solid greens, bunkers, fairways, and tee boxes. Gorgeous scenery on some of the finishing holes and just a really fun layout.

Fix your bunkers

Love the course, play it almost daily. But the bunkers need work. Some are soft, some are hard as rock. outside of that, course is in great shape. If they gave some serious attention to the bunkers this place would be 5 stars from me.

Beware of the middle bunker in the short area. There's literal blacktop underneath it. Not even joking. Actual concrete. Scraped my 60° wedge pretty badly.

Disappointing

I would normally rate this 5 stars, and actually love the course. But this time around, I was really disappointed to pay full price only to find out a minute before teeing off that we were playing the back 9 twice due to the fact that they were aerating the front 9. Had I known that, I would've opted to play another course in the area that was offering the full 18. There was no mention of it in the reservation, and they didn't even mention it in the pro shop when I checked in. We found out from the starter as we were about to drive off to the first tee. Probably won't be back for a while. This left a really sour taste in my mouth.

Solid course

First time playing AC. I really loved the layout of the course. Most of it was in good shape. If I could give the conditions a 3.5, I would. But unfortunately GolfPass doesn't allow partial scores in their star rankings. Just a few holes needed some TLC. A couple of fairways were missing grass in large spots. Greens weren't the fastest, but they had no visible pitch marks, they rolled pretty nicely, and they were consistent. It's a little bit of a drive for me, but I would definitely come back. Course has a ton of potential if they just tidied things up a little bit in a few spots. Highly recommended if you're in the area.

Worth the money,

Good challenge, good conditions, solid course. One of my favorites to play in the Raleigh area since I moved down in August. It's a bit of a Drive, but worth it.

I got out at as a single at 9:10 a.m. on a Sunday, and was done before noon. Decided to play another 18, and was done with that by 3:00 p.m. Sooooo I decided to try one more 18. Unfortunately the front 9 was packed at that time. So I just drove through a bunch of groups until the 10th hole where I joined up with a twosome who was waiting on the box. They were kind enough to let me join. I was done with that 9 by 5:30 p.m. Needless to say, the replay rate of $20 is fantastic. Especially if you can get out at a time where the course isn't too busy. 45 holes on a Sunday? Not bad for $80 bucks.

Subpar outing... This time

I've played here multiple times now and it's a good course. Condition wise it's always been in good shape with smooth and fast greens, well manicured fairways and tee boxes, and quality bunkers.

I will play there again for sure, but unfortunately the past time I played there was just after Hurricane Ian. While the course was playable, they probably should've given it one more day before they opened. It was really wet, which was expected. The main reason I say that they should've given it another day is the fact that there was debris all over the place. Fairways were covered with small branches and leaves to the point where you couldn't even find your ball. I lost at least 3-4 balls in the fairway.

On top of the poor conditions, I have to say that I was pretty annoyed by the way the starter moved me around prior to teeing off. First he had me with a threesome that looked like they would be pretty decent golfers. Then he decided to switch me to another group of older golfers who looked like they might know a thing or two about playing golf. Then, he finally put me with a two young guys who were just starting out. He claimed "I'll set you up with these two guys instead, they play fast." Now, I don't mind if you're just starting out. We've all been there. But these guys were sharing a set of clubs. One of the guys would hit 3 tee shots on every tee-box, and take 7 practice swings before each shot, all of which would leave nasty, non-replaced divots all over the course (Not exaggerating even a little). Off the tee, one guy would hit it 40 yards right x3, the other guy would hit it 40 yards left x2. Then they would both need the same club. So now on top of the multiple tee shots on every hole that they hit and now have to find in the woods, I'm also waiting 2x as long on pretty much every shot out of the fairway, every chip/pitch, and every putt. Maybe don't let people share a bag on a busy weekend. Oh, and enforce the rules on your scorecard. If guys pull up wearing sweatpants, maybe don't let them out. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

Not impressed

Definitely not in a rush to go back. That kind of bums me out since I live nearby and was hoping this would be a good place to add to my rotation. I only played the Meadowlands 9 and decided that I had seen enough. There isn't a flat tee box on the course which makes teeing off an adventure. You should never have to tee off with the ball above/below your feet. Bunkers are hard dirt and not kept up.

Greens were in good shape and fast, but other than that I don't have much good to say about this place.

Nice Track

This was my second time playing the course. Well worth the hour drive from Clayton, especially with a hot deal for $37. I just moved to NC from NY and this course would easily be in the $80-$90 range up there.

Fast, but fair greens. Fairways and tee boxes are in great shape. Bunkers are fine.

It's definitely a challenging course and you can get into trouble if you don't know where to hit it. Cart GPS or a yardage book would be really helpful for first timers. Since this was my second time playing here, I was lucky to know some of the positions I had to put myself in to score well.

I would've given it a 4.5 overall if I could, but unfortunately GolfPass only allows a 4.

My only complaint this time was the pace of play. It seemed fine on the front 9, but then it slowed down considerably on the back. There were a couple of groups ahead of us that slowed the entire course down.

Disappointment

Luckily I got the Hot Deal on Golf Now because I can't even imagine paying $144 for this course. I paid $50ish and feel like that was too much.

After driving over an hour, I arrived at a course that was in very poor shape. Tee box grass was long, there were weeds all over the place, and just generally ratty conditions.

The only plus was that I was literally the only person on the course... on a Sunday. This course was a major bummer. I hear that the Lake Course is nicer, but I don't plan on driving that far to find out.

Nice, but overhyped and overpriced

After playing the three major university courses in the region, I can say with certainty that Duke was my least favorite of the three. There were parts of the Duke course that were better than the others, but the price left a really sour taste in my mouth. Considering that I could play Lonnie Poole or Finley for about half the price, the $120 price tag is just too steep. I plan on playing here again, but it won't be until next summer when I can play the 4:00 p.m. twilight rate and still finish 18.

Pace was a bit slow, but condition wise it was in great shape. The tees, fairways, and greens were all top-notch. While the greens were in great shape, my only complaint was that they were just too fast. I enjoy and prefer fast greens, but if you were above the hole, you were three putting. When you bring your putter back 2 inches for a 10 foot putt, and you end up 12 feet past the hole, it feels a bit unfair and quite frankly it's unenjoyable. I hit 13 greens in regulation and lost more shots putting than I have since I started playing 20+ years ago.

I'd recommend giving the course a try since it is a really beautiful course and challenging, but it's just a bit overhyped. If you're looking to play the nicest university course in the area, play the NC State course... or UNC course when they finish the redesign next fall. You can go on Golfnow, and get a hot deal for each of those courses. It'll cost you about the same as one round at the Duke course.

Bunkers need work

I know they are shutting down soon to do a renovation which may explain why it wasn't in tip-top shape. I really hope they address the bunkers during the renovation. This is my second time playing here and each time the bunkers were a gigantic disappointment. When you repeatedly hit the liner under the sand, it makes it a bit difficult to hit out of bunkers. Love the course, just needs some TLC. Looking forward to playing it again next fall after the renovation

No more

Since I'm moving, I decided to play Casperkill one more time before I left town. I should've played some place else.

The price and the pace of play are not worth it. I could've played The Links at Union Vale for the same price, and the Links is a top 10 course in the state. Also, I would've played The Links in 4 hours. My round at Casperkill was 5+ hours. Multiple people who were behind us, drove off the course and quit because of how slow it was. The brutal pace of play makes it not fun to play here anymore. I used to zip through and have fun. Also, there was no ranger and the starter told us we were running behind because he squeezed a few member groups out in the morning. So not only are we behind schedule, but the course is also packed to the gills.

Also, the greens at Casperkill are insanely slow.

Brutal Pace Lately

Time to get a ranger out there. I play here pretty regularly and enjoy the course. It's one of my favorites in the area. I probably played here between 20 to 30 times last year and never once had a problem with the pace. I've probably played here around 10x this year as well. But the past few times, the pace of play has been brutal. Going to be taking a break from playing here for a while.until they can get the 5 hour rounds under control. Nothing worse than waiting 10 minutes on every tee box. Impossible to get a rhythm going.

A little rough around the edges

I've seen this course in better shape. Not that it was in bad shape. It wasn't. The fairways were fantastic. Rough was full and thick. Greens were in decent shape, but not great. Golfers really need to fix their pitch marks. This is no fault of the course, but instead the fault of lazy golfers. I was fixing 2-3 pitch marks on every green and could've easily fixed more if I wanted to make it my mission to fix them all. People c’mon, fix your pitch marks… or at least fix one pitch mark when you get to the green even if it’s not yours. Tee boxes weren't as great as I've seen them in the past, but were fine for the most part. The part of the course that really needs work though, are the bunkers. In the past, I've seen them with nice crisp edges. But they are starting to get a little scraggly. I would normally give the conditions of this course either 4 or 5 stars, but with certain parts of the course not kept up very well, I'm dropping that to 3 stars. If I could rate in halves, I'd say the course conditions were 3.5, but that's not an option on GolfPass. I'd still recommend the course to anyone and will continue to come here because I love the track. But I think I’ll aim for the later/cheaper tee times since I don’t see this as a $120 course at the moment. Hopefully as the season progresses, things like the messy bunkers will be cleaned up and get taken care of a little better.

Pace of play has been excellent the past couple of seasons and yesterday was no different. We didn’t run into another group until the 17th hole. On top of that, nobody was riding our butts.

Good Track

Good course, challenging holes.

I'm hoping to move to the area soon and wanted to try out some courses to get a feel for what the area courses were like. So, while playing Keith Hills earlier in the week, one of the guys I was playing with recommended this course. I had my doubts based on the recommended score on GolfPass, but decided to give it a chance. It didn't disappoint.

The price was right. Visually, and the holes were interesting and made you think. The course was in good shape overall, but a little dry. But every course in the area was dry the week I played down in the Raleigh area. The course was fair, and good shots were rewarded. I will definitely add this to my rotation once I'm down here full-time.

My only complaint was that there was some inconsistency in the bunkers. Some were super firm, while others offered a little fluffier sand. Outside of that, no complaints.

Tough course, bring your A-game

A beautiful facility from top to bottom. Raleigh golfers are lucky to have a place like this in their area. I'd love another crack at the course since I didn't bring my A-game.

The course itself was in fantastic condition. This is a tough track with a lot of visually intimidating holes. But if you hit good shots, you'll be in good position. I played the red tees, and they played just a little too long for me. But I feel like if I moved up to the Wolfpack tees, the course might've felt too short and not challenging enough. Perhaps the right thing to do would be to shorten the reds slightly or lengthen the Wolfpack a little.

Very few complaints about this course. One of them might be that the type of sand they use in the bunkers. I wasn't in many bunkers, maybe 4-5 shots total, but every bunker shot was a fried egg which is tough to hit out of if you're not accustomed to it. Also, it would be great if they had a place to practice chipping and bunkers prior to the round. Maybe they did, but I didn't see it.

If you're in the area, play this place. It's worth the money, and it's in tip-top shape.

Challenging and a great value

I had heard great things about this course after playing a few other local courses earlier in the week.

It did not disappoint and it was a fantastic track. The greens were quick. The fairways were wide enough that you could stay out of trouble if you hit in the right spot. If you hit it in the wrong spot though, there was enough slope to the fairways that your ball could easily find the rough. Everything was very well maintained and each hole was "pretty".

I teed off at 2:30 p.m. and didn't see a single person on the course. You can't beat that. I kept expecting to run into groups, but that never happened and it allowed me to just relax and take my time on this gem.

I don't have one complaint about the Neuse and will definitely be back when I'm in this area again. As a NY'er playing in NC, I was really surprised that this course was only $39. I guess there's a lot of competition in the area and some courses need to offer lower prices to compete. Well that works for me. I would play this course regularly if I lived in the area. If GolfPass allowed me to give a 4.5 score, that's what I'd give The Neuse. But, since I'm stuck with either 4 or 5 stars, I went with 4.

Fazi-WHOAH!

What an absolute stunner of a course and pleasure to play. It was my first experience with a Tom Fazio designed course. I was in town for the week to play golf, and UNC Finley did not disappoint. It wasn't peak season yet so the grass was still a little dormant and yellow, but that didn't affect what I thought of the facility. I can't wait to play it again in the future when everything is lush and green. Fantastic tee boxes. Nice, smooth, and fast greens that rolled very true. Tightly cut fairways which added 15 yards to my tee shots. My only complaint would be a minor one. But the sand traps needed a little work, or more sand in some places to be precise. On two bunker shots, my club head hit the liner of the bunker which brought my swing to a screeching halt. Other than that, I can't recommend this course enough. Go play this place if you're in the area.

Good classic course *

Good classic course and fun to play with the exception of 1 or 2 holes. Casperkill is always a great time. It's probably the course I play the most in the area because the mix of price, challenge, and conditions gives you the best value for your money. I would give it a 3.5 overall.

Greens aren't the fastest, but they're in pretty good shape for the price. A bit on the slower side so make sure not to read too much break. Fairways are usually pretty good. Never any bad spots, just not cut as tight as some other course in the area. Bunkers are a little firmer than some others in the area as well. All of these things are more than serviceable and make for a great day of golf.

Also, they have a pretty decent practice area to get you warmed up for your round. The range balls are a mix of old balls that were probably found all around the course, to actual range balls. All seem to be a little dead, so don't expect to see varying distances when warming up with each club. Good size putting green and nice little chipping area as well.

Here's my one beef with Casperkill. The tee boxes need some work. There are some holes where it's really difficult to even find level footing. Either the tee box is crowned, so you're left with the ball slightly above or below your feet. Or they place the tee markers on an up slope. If they leveled the tee boxes and gave them a little extra TLC, this place would be slightly more than a 4/5 for me.

I seem to be getting paired up with the same two people the past few times I've gone... Joe and Tina. If you get paired up with Joe and Tina, you're in luck because they are an awesome couple to play with. Super friendly and fun to be around on the course.

* I would give Casperkill an over 3.5 if the ratings allowed it, but I went with a 4.
