South Granville Country Club
Played On 10/20/2023Back to flawless greens
Played here a bunch a few years ago when greens were all perfect (and lightning fast usually) as it made up for the rest of the course conditions being fair at best. Greens weren’t great for a while so I found other places to play but I took a flyer on a midweek Hot Deal and am happy to say this was the best I’ve seen it out there. Greens were all flawless (and a much fairer speed), tee boxes and fairway were in better shape than before too. Still some hard pan areas to deal with in spots but this isn’t Pinehurst we are talking about here. Also larger pro shop was welcome surprise. Definitely will consider playing again soon.
Riverwood Golf Club - Deer Run/Riverview Course
Played On 05/30/2023So close to ideal conditions
Snagged a hot deal for Tuesday after Memorial Day as a single. Deer Run/Riverview routing. Caught up with another single on 2nd hole and played rest of the way with him. Bunch of twosomes out there so pace of play was good not amazing. Greens were shaved tight so they played firm and fast which was surprising after the rain from the weekend but rolled true. Fairways were solid. Rough hasn’t really filled in so not much to it. The only issue I saw was the tee boxes. At least 1/3 of them were in really bad shape. Huge bare spots. And not just in one strip where tee markers were. Otherwise course is in great shape. Would recommend it.
Lochmere Golf Club
Played On 08/21/2022Flawless greens even with the downpours
Everyone around knows this course does not drain well but I have to say the new green system they put in few years did it’s job amazingly well. Rained buckets the morning I played and then again mid round and you would have no idea. Rest of the course still held a lot of water but any course would have. Completely worth the $50 I paid for a morning weekend round.

Played On 07/23/2021Challenging greens
Played on a Friday afternoon hot deal for $20 and course was almost empty so played in 3 hours. Typical conditions for this course. Greens are flawless and will bite you if you lose concentration for a second. Rest of course is hit and miss so you have to roll ball to get grass in some spots. Good mix of holes and some elevation changes to deal with too. Don’t let the yardage fool you though. Play the whites unless you are a single digit handicapper. Much harder course from the back tees.
Raleigh Golf Association

If you understand it’s a 40+ year old course and you can get past the first two greens then it’s not a bad track. For $36 on a Sunday midday it’s fair. The layout is fine not spectacular. Requires accuracy off the tee on most holes although there are a few green light holes where it’s worth the risk. Don’t think I’ve ever played it where it wasn’t a full tee sheet so don’t plan on a sub 4 hour round. Won’t happen.

As usual greens are flawless and pin positions take advantage of it (although it’s time to move #9 pin) where you are absolutely punished for misjudging speed. Rest of course is just average but I can deal with that when greens are good, price is right and pace of play is great.

Typically don’t play this course once mid-summer hits because greens get too beat up from people not fixing ball marks and being bent greens they have to keep them soft which makes it worse. It’s getting that way again but not too bad. And the fairways are in the best shape I’ve seen in years. Got a hot deal on 5th for under $25 which made it even more worthwhile. Course was busy but wasn’t that long of a round (4 hrs).
The Golf Club at Eagle Creek
Played On 05/31/2021Good deal
Course was in good shape. Greens are typically slow but roll true. Had a lot of rain the day before but dried out mostly by the back 9. Zero bunkers on course just some small water hazards to watch for on most holes. It was Memorial Day so wasn’t surprised by the pace but it was slow.
The Challenge Golf Club
Played On 06/07/2020Solid track
Grabbed a $39 hot deal. Very good value. Of course I had a career round so might be slightly jaded but the greens are basically perfect. Saw one small dead spot on par 3 by highway otherwise in excellent shape. Quick but not punishing. Tee boxes were good. Fairways above average. Bunkers were thin (except for 11 which I found out has 18” of sand on the high side of it). Played smoothly until caught a twosome behind a foursome on 13/14 but still played in 3:30 on a Sunday late morning so can’t complain about that.
The Neuse Golf Club
Played On 10/18/2020Still solid course for the money
Glad to see the ownership change hasn’t had any noticeable impact on course conditions. Fairways, greens, tee boxes, bunkers all in great shape. Was slower than typical round due to a five some that was two groups in front of us was only drawback to the day. Absolutely will be back in the next few weeks.
Excellent! Thank you so much for the great review. We are glad you had an incredible time, and we hope to see you again soon! Thanks for choosing The Neuse Golf Club.
The Challenge Golf Club
Played On 09/05/2020Continues to be in great shape
Probably my 10th time playing there this calendar year. Continues to be in fantastic condition and worth the price. Groundskeeper was in a mood placing pins this weekend though. Had them in several spots I hadn’t seen before. The only thing that prevents this course from being 5 stars is cart conditions and lack of driving range ( I hear new carts are on order for the winter)
Olde Liberty Golf & Country Club
Played On 02/02/2020Worth a shot
Hadn’t played here in years but hot deals kept popping up so tried it a few weeks ago. Overall it wasn’t as bad off as I thought it might be. Greens are actually really good. Quick but fair. Layout of the track is so great. They just can’t keep up with the maintenance of the fairways and bunkers like the terrain requires. So many areas are washed out leaving fairways thin or edges basically dirt. If you understand going in that you might have to roll the ball around to get some grass then it’s well worth it to give it a shot. If you are a “purist” (aka golf snob) then this isn’t the place for you. Pace has been good the few times I’ve played. Shop is bare bones.
Thank you for the great feedback! We love hearing from you and are glad you had a good experience. We would love the opportunity to bump those 4 stars to 5. We hope you will come back soon so we can WOW you on your next visit. Until then, take care!

Caught a hot deal on a Wed morning. Drove from Durham to play on the new greens. They are amazing (although you can see the recent dry spell taking a toll on tbem already), fast and hard. Fringes were redone before greens and they are in good shape overall. Fairways were solid, tee boxes ok. No driving range yet (warm up net) but putting green is expansive. Only drawback was it took nearly 4 hours, midweek for just my two some (that turned into a threesome) to play. Saw pro one time on 5th hole when oddly enough an older couple was letting us play through, then never saw another ranger again. For the conditions the $25 was a steal though. If you haven't been there in a while I would definitely go play there!
Lakeshore Golf Course
Played On 10/01/2017Value course and sneaky fun
Full disclosure this is my "home" course as I've lived near it for 15 years now but I am impressed with the course. As most of the people around here know the course is being sold to a developer. Most courses would see a definite drop off in conditions but this is the oppposite. The course has improved since last year. Greens are slow and they don't have much break but they are also flawless. Fairways are in best shape I've seen in a long time too. Tee boxes are iffy. This is a very short course, target golf mostly. But being a shorter hitter like me and being able to go at par 5s with a long iron if you hit a good drive is refreshing. Place won't win any awards
for amenities but carts are clean and Chip (course pro) is always pleasant to deal with. For under $35 on a weekend in the condition it is now and being 5 mins from RTP/Brier Creek/540, this is a steal. If you have never played it do so soon as it likely won't be around after this winter.
Reedy Creek Golf Course
Played On 11/09/2016Make the drive soon
Been 2 years since I played out here and had hit and miss experiences in the past but $24 on a Wednesday and playing partner lives in Cleveland area so it was worth it to me to ride an hour. Extremely pleased with the decision. We teed off about 5 mins before 11am and I was loaded up and back on the road by 145p and we even made a pit stop at the turn. I'm sure weather that morning kept a few people away but it would have been a 3hr round max even with a few more golfers around.
Course conditions were phenomenal. Even the tee boxes were in great shape. Course is all Bermuda so greens had been dyed already and even though it rained a decent amount the morning we played they were crazy fast. Smooth and true though. You had to keep your speed right or you were in trouble. Putted 2 balls off the green!
It isn't the most imaginative layout. Lot of 350-360 yard par 4s but par 5s are reachable which makes risk reward holes and par 3s are challenging enough.
I fully intend to play there again soon. I do think the greens will start getting crusty with them going dormant so probably would play in the next few weeks to get the same conditions. Can't imagine you would regret it.
Creek at Carolina Trace Country Club
Played On 09/24/2016Good choice
Second time playing course. Creek course both times. Facility is good. Brand new carts and they provided a towel as well which came in handy as ended up being very hot. Course was still wet from recent rain so played long and slow although greens dried out mid round and sped up a good bit. First green is little patchy but after that they were solid.
My best advice is to bring bug spray. Lots of it. Got a $27 deal on Golfnow and was able to tee off a little early bc everyone wants to play the Lakes course. We saw a total of 1 twosome the entire round on creek course so we set our own pace the whole time. It's a drive from Durham but for the cost, conditions and pace of play it was worth it.
The Golf Club at Chapel Ridge
Played On 09/05/2016Good test
Always enjoy this course. Greens were punched about 2 1/2 weeks ago I'd guess but basically healed now as aeration holes didn't impact play at all. Greens are seeing some infiltration of crabgrass in spots and as you would expect the summer has taken a toll on them but again didn't really impact play. Rough has no such problem. Very sticky and if ball settles down just take the stroke and punch it down the fairway. Fairways are basically perfect. Def worth the $29!
The Neuse Golf Club

Played on Father's Day and even though course was busy pace of play was excellent. Waited on a few shots here and there but never to the point it was a problem. Course was in fantastic shape. Worth more than the $36 I snagged on GolfNow for a Sunday midday tee time. Sure, it is a haul from Durham to get out there but I have yet to play out there and be disappointed.
Carolina Club, The
Played On 07/31/2015Great deal
Got lucky and grabbed a hot deal on golfnow for Friday afternoon round. First time playing the course and had heard great things about it. Pro shop desk was helpful and friendly and told me I could tee off whenever. First hole had me concerned as side of fairway was roped off for mud and there were weeds in fairway but course conditions improved immediately. Greens were soft (think it has rained earlier that morning) but still quick enough to make you think. Lot of water hazards but I liked the heavy par 5 and par 3 setup. Wind wasn't too bad for being near the coast but it was into you on most of the back 9 so it played long. Best part was I didn't wait to hit a shot until 16 when I caught a twosome. Still finished under 3 hours. Overall, good course with challenging layout. Wouldn't pay rack rate for it but absolutely will watch for deals and play again.
Thank you for your review! We appreciate your business and hope to see you again on your next visit to the OBX!
Pine Hollow Golf Course
Played On 07/25/2015Always good shape
Alwayss enjoy this course but their rack rates are too high for me to drive 45 mins. This time I was able to snag a golfnow deal for $34 on a Saturday at 1230pm. I was prepared for long day but course was basically empty on a perfect weather day. Greens here are always solid. On the quick side but not super slick.
