Whitestone Golf Course
Played On 05/23/2018Enjoyable round
First, the bad: the sand traps are awful. But if you’re willing to trade that in for great fairways and greens and some chalkenging par 5s, look no further than Whitestone. Super value, too.
Kings Creek Country Club
Played On 10/06/2016nice layout, reasonable course conditions
This is a fun course to play except for a few holes (e.g., 12, 15) that can be quite unpredictable/unfair. Expect a bumpy ride if you drive your carts onto any fairway on the course. But the greens and fairways are not too bad for the money.
If you're looking for high-value lessons, try Phil Hale, the golf pro here....I've had a couple with him and he's really good....works with what you have and his instruction is very easy to follow and execute. I"m very grateful for his advice and coaching, it beats anything I've tried so far and the results were immediate.
Southern Oaks Golf Club
Played On 09/17/2014What a difference a couple of years make!
This is a much improved course from when I played it 2 years ago. It's clear that a lot of TLC has gone into it recently. Good fairways and teeboxes, and the greens will eventually be smooth (a bit inconsistent and bumpy right now, but still puttable.) Some bunkers have good sand, and they tell me the rest will be filled up this winter.
The staff in the pro-shop were very friendly and helpful too, as was the guy who met me at the car and loaded my clubs.
Keep it up!
Falconhead Resort & Country Club
Played On 07/05/2014Great greens, interesting back 9.
Mostly flat and straight-away front 9, but the back 9 is hilly and varied, with plenty of visual beauty and intimidation.
Fairways are in ok shape. But the bent-grass greens are really true, albeit difficult to putt because of the tiers and undulations.
Worth the 90-min drive from the Dallas area.
Rusted Rail Golf Club
Played On 06/18/2014Great value, great greens
I gave this an extra star for value...can't beat their deals on golfnow. The greens are really good, and the fairways, while still below average, are a vast improvement over 2 years ago.
Definitely worth a visit despite the long drive.
Duck Creek Golf Course
Played On 06/11/2014Big improvement from Oakridge
While the course is still not perfect by any means, it's certainly an improvement over the last time I played it (2 years ago). The greens are good, fairways are passable, and the layout is interesting enough to keep you coming back.
Buncombe Creek Golf Course
Played On 05/31/2014Enjoyable course layout, wish it was an 18-hole course
well-maintained with holes 2 thru 8 showing plenty of character and/or beauty.
RB Golf Club & Resort
Played On 05/30/2014Great greens
The fairways and teeboxes are patchy but the greens more than make up for them. Beautiful, true-rolling bent grass makes putting a pleasure and every putt within 15 feet is a legitimate birdie op.
Definitely worth the long drive from Dallas, particularly if you get a hot deal. Enjoy!
Woodlawn Country Club
Played On 05/25/2014Quirky layout, terrible "greens."
The front nine seems to have been squeezed into the acreage normally reserved for, say, 6 holes, and while it does make it amusing to play for a first-timer, your score will not reflect your actual skill, since there are 2-3 unfair holes.)
Overall, the lack of course maintenance shows on the greens, which are advertised as bent grass but actually seem to be mowed down versions of the fairway.
Willow Springs Golf Course
Played On 9/6/2013Flat course, suitable for beginners/intermediates
Nothing memorable about this track, but it's better than working. Course maintenance is quite good but the course layout itself lacks any interesting features.
Buffalo Creek Golf Club
Played On 9/2/2013Greens in poor shape this time
I think these guys had a tough summer. They say they're trying to get the greens back, I wish them the best in that effort. But putting on these greens today was not fun. Patchy, different speeds, humps and bumps.....took away from the overall enjoyment of what usually is a pretty decent track.
Two at Sherrill Park Municipal Golf Course
Played On 7/8/2013Sherrill #2: short, tight course in great shape
I hadn't played this in 2 years, was pleased to see the fairways and greens in such great shape. The long par 4's (3, 9, 11, 18) are great holes, plus tight short par 4's and a good set of par 3's make this as good an experience (IMHO) as course 1.
Lakes at Firewheel Golf Park
Played On 6/6/2013Daunting course, in very good shape except for bunkers (being repaired)
This course may be among the top 5 hardest courses in the area; so be kind to yourself when selecting which tees to play from. Back 9 is pure murder, with 14-16 providing the only relief. Greenside bunkers were being repaired today so I had to take relief twice.
Tanglewood Resort Hotel and Conference Center
Played On 6/5/2013Nice Greens, a few memorable holes
I was expecting more hilly terrain and more views of Lake Texoma...instead, this is a relatively flat but tree-lined course with 4-5 notable exceptions.....those include #18, which is a memorable hole, sweeping around a lake and boasting great views all around.
Twin Creeks Golf Course
Played On 5/29/2013Good shape, reasonably easy layout but tricky greens
Challenging finishing holes (16, 17, 18) and a couple of memorable ones (7, 8), with the rest being more-or-less straightforward fare. Greens have lots of hidden and late break.
Legacy Ridge Country Club
Played On 11/20/2012The greens were as true as I've ever putted anywhere.
Nice layout....fairways were brownish coz of time of year, but wow the greens were good. Amazingly good.
We are glad to hear that you have noticed the improvements to the course and enjoyed your round. Hope to see you back at Southern Oaks soon!
