Sarasota National Golf Club
Played On 11/28/2017Through a housing development
With a late morning tee time we were round in under four hours which as a twosome seemed a long time. The course is in good shape with greens at a good pace, though some with severe slopes, and very wide fairways. No rough to speak of, so unless you are playing the black tees, you should have little trouble. The layout of the course is through a building site at the moment so not very scenic and there are some very long rides between holes which would make it unwalkable even if walking was allowed. Pro shop staff, starter and rangers were all very friendly and helpful. Range balls were complimentary. Not my favorite course in the Venice area but I would play it again, and it should be much more scenic once all the development is complete.
Heron Creek Golf and Country Club - Oaks/Marsh Course
Played On 11/27/2017Worth a play.
Played the Marsh and the Creek nines. Course was in excellent shape and the greens were lush and putted true though a little slow. There was an unusual smell close to some of the ponds like RV gray water, perhaps from recycling, though it did not detract from the enjoyment of the course. Plenty of hazards and several forced carries especially on the par 3s. We played the Marsh nine in 1½ hours but ran into slower groups on the Creek nine which took 2¼ hours. Clubhouse staff and the Rangers were very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this course and would play it again.
Riverwood Golf Club
Played On 11/26/2017Wonderful!
Played early with another couple in just under four hours. The course was in excellent shape with lush fairways and fast true greens. No complaints and would definitely recommend this course and would play it again.
Not up to scratch
In two weeks playing in South Florida, this is the first time I have been disappointed in a golf course. It is situated in what looks like a depressed area but the driveway and the club house are impressive. However, despite a nice layout of the course, the conditioning is not up to par. The tee boxes and fairways are alright but the greens are poor, slow and patchy, and it looks like the holes had not been changed for several days. The bunkers had not been raked and there was grass growing in many of them. Pro shop staff were excellent as was the starter who gave us advice on how to play some of the holes, and managed to get us on an hour before our noon tee time. From the blue tees, the course is a mixture of short par fours and some long par threes. I don’t think I would play this course again unless there is some major work especially on the greens.
Magnolia Landing Golf & Country Club
Played On 11/23/2017Poor design.
Played Thanksgiving on a Hot Deal and did not know it was a shotgun start. However there were not many players, but it still took four hours. The course was in good shape with some wet spots and the greens were fairly smooth and a good speed but not overly fast. My main problem with the course is the layout. There are some incredible distances between green and the next tee. There must be over ½ mile between the second green and the third tee. In my opinion that is very poor design, and simply makes the course unwalkable. Water comes into play on 16 holes but is fairly easy to avoid. I’m not sure whether I would play this course again as not much can be done about the design.
Enjoyable round.
Enjoyable course from the correct tees. Many forced carries over water especially on the Raptor 9. Fairways were in good shape and the greens were smooth and a good speed. Most greens were plateaued so if you did not land in the middle, the ball would run off and sometimes into trouble or with a tough chip up to the pin. It is the first course I have played in 50 years that did not have any regular bunkers, but plenty of waste bunkers which double as cart paths. I would recommend this course. Fun if you are driving well. Pro shop staff were friendly and range balls were complimentary.
Coral Oaks Golf Course
Played On 11/22/2017Most enjoyable round
Very pleasantly surprised that despite it’s meagre three star rating, it is a beautiful little course. Staff were pleasant and the weather was perfect. It is quite far out there but worth the trip. Tee boxes were so-so, but the fairways were very generous and in great shape. The greens were firm and fast, so staying on them was a problem, but they putted true. There was very little rough but some of the hazards can sneak up on you. As a twosome with a 0730 start, we finished in 2.75 hours. I would definitely recommend this course and feel it is worth more than the three stars it has been reviewed at.
Eagle Ridge Golf Club
Played On 11/20/2017Great course if you play the right tees.
Early tee time second to a twosome. Joined by a single and decided to play off the tips. Big mistake! Only play from the blues if you are hitting your driver very straight. After several lost balls in the hazards. We moved to the whites and enjoyed ourselves much better. The course is suffering from many lost trees after Irma and a large pile of deadwood greets you as you drive up. Off the fairway is very soft and rutted and plays like a hazard, as you are unlikely to find your ball. The fairways were good but the greens were slow after being verticut. I would like to play this course again and I hope I would play it smarter. Finished in under three hours despite all our problems.
Palmetto-Pine Country Club
Played On 11/19/2017Beautiful Little Course
Early tee time on a beautiful day. Finished under three hours. Course was great with lush fairways and a beautiful layout. Some defects on, and a few areas of GUR in front of some greens which were otherwise a good speed though somewhat bumpy. Bunkers had some rocks though soft and played well. All in all I really enjoyed playing Palmetto Pines, would recommend it, and would definitely play it again.
West at Jacaranda Golf Club
Played On 11/16/2017Not as good as it could be
Jacaranda West
Initial disappointment was that the range was irons only. My driver had not been behaving and I really wanted to sort it out. Range balls were exorbitant at nearly $10 for about 40 balls in a small bucket. Our tee time was 1147 but got out around 1107. The course was packed but we played the first nine in an hour thirty. Slower on the back but finished in three and a half hours. Tee boxes were adequate, but the fairways were excellent, like playing off a plush carpet. However the greens were not good. They were patchy and slow, not at all like the practice green which was beautiful. Bunkers were hard and full of rocks which peppered the greens. Fairways were generous and the rough was short, but could be difficult. Water hazards were abundant but mainly visual as they were not really in play until 17 and 18 where they really caught the attention. I enjoyed the layout of the course, but the greens and greenside bunkers brought the rating down. I would play this course again with a good “Hot Deal”.
We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to tell us about your experience at Jacaranda. We are glad to know you enjoyed the overall layout and conditions. We are aware of the issues with the bunkers and we are working to get that rectified. We hope to have the opportunity to offer you a "wow" experience soon.
Atlantis Country Club
Played On 11/15/2017Most enjoyable day
We played early in the morning and were let through by a foursome on the tenth tee. Other than that we were on our own for the whole round. Played in about three and a half hours. The greens were excellent but the fairways were somewhat sparse. Some tight holes so hitting them straight off the tee is prime. The staff were friendly and we got out a bit earlier than our tee time. Excellent value for the money, which was helped by a “Hot Deal”. Would definitely recommend this course
Country Club of Coral Springs
Played On 11/14/2017Very Nice Course
We really enjoyed playing at Coral Springs. Clubhouse has not been built and the proshop is in a trailer. Staff were very friendly, and the weather was perfect. Course conditioning was good, though the fairways were a bit sparse. The greens were fast and rolled true. Bunkers were good though we got ahead of maintenance and after that they had not been raked.
Fairways were generous, but trouble could be found. Pace of play was excellent early in the morning, it was like having our own private course.
We would definitely play this course again.
Madison Green Country Club
Played On 11/06/2017Course not in optimum shape
To be fair there had been a lot of rain in the preceding days, so the course was soft and not helped by the downpour when we were on the 9th hole. We were informed by GPS that the course was to be cartpaths only from that point. I would rather walk than have carts and not able to get to your ball. However that said, the greens were fast and true and only slightly slowed after the heavy shower. Fairways were somewhat patchy with some tight lies. Many holes were tight and any sprayed balls were gone. Fortunately we found as many as we lost. I would play this course again under drier conditions. The price was right with a Hot Deal.
