Mission Hills - Gary Player Course
Played On 08/18/2023Great value
Played as a single (the twosome I had been paired with went off 30 mins early!). I was a little worried about pace of play as a single knowing that it was mostly 3 and 4 balls ahead of me. Eventually got invited to join a 3 ball after 14 holes.
Grass surfaces are in pretty good condition for middle of August. Greens a little slow but ran true. Bunkers were often quite firm. A few tee boxes looked well worn (divots) but could always find a fair lie to tee up from.
The practice ground and green is right in front of the clubhouse. The cafe in the clubhouse is adequate. Nothing special. Staff were all friendly (inside the pro shop, cafe and at the starter).
Good value at $55 including GPS cart.
Hapuna Golf Course
Played On 07/05/2023Hot deal bargain
Got a great hot deal (<$70)!!
Course is in great condition. Greens were firm and true but a little slow but I think that is because the wind can really get up here.
I played the orange tees (6000 yds) and with the wind that was plenty for my first time here. Local knowledge helps with some of the lines of the tee boxes.
Definitely recommend it if you can bag a Hot Deal.
Mission Hills - Gary Player Course
Played On 11/23/2022Worth the trip…
I play out in the Palm Desert a couple of times a year: in summary I’m glad I made the trip. I got a Hot Deal for $100/person and we enjoyed our round.
Pace of play was slow… by the 5th hole we weee waiting on the tee box on every hole: this may have been in part because we were playing cart path only.
Conditions were to be expected just after reopening from over seeding but there were a few scruffy paths, and transitions dotted around the course. Didn’t negate having fun.
A lot of desert golf can start to feel samey… there are a few interesting holes here… I quite enjoyed the par 3’s and there is plenty of water around the course to be mindful of.
Shame the clubhouse/ pro shop facilities seem to be a bit of an after thought. Again it didn’t impact our golf fun but the facilities are a little sparse.
Shadow Ridge Golf Club
Played On 09/03/2021Great condition for late summer
Played 09/03/21 and the course was in great condition. Greens were a little slow but rolled true.
Busy morning but pace of play was right around 4hr 5mins.
Santa Anita Golf Course
Played On 08/27/2021Slower and slower…. Beware 5 balls
Had a 7:57am tee time on Friday.
Usually get round in sun 4 hrs. This is the 2nd week running we’ve been over 4:30hrs.
We were back up by 4th hole. There were 4 groups playing the par 4 5th.
When we got to hole 14 we saw a 6 ball walking up 16 and a 5 ball putting out on 17.
These guys must have been out at around 7am.
Please Santa Anita… don’t let 5 & 6 balls play!
Kona Country Club

Stunning coastal holes; well conditioned course: weaves through resort in several holes; we got a great hot deal on Golf Now.
Would play again.

Fun layout for vacation golf
.plenty of challenges and the course was in great condition.
Water side holes are beautiful.
Played a midday hot deal as a 3 ball and we were round in a little under 3hr 30 mins.
Vellano Country Club
Played On 03/30/2017Ok if you get a deal.
Got a deal for $22 ... not bad for 18 holes with cart. Had big expectations for this Private Country Club/ Greg Norman Design layout, but pretty disappointed to be honest. Spent too long driving in the cart between holes and from mountainous elevated tees. Lots of forced carries over canyons off the tee boxes. Fairways firm and fast (and dormant). My buddy was losing balls every other hole from tee shots since the holes were so tight. Greens stimping at 10 (they were in good condition), but the green contouring is ridiculous on some greens. Pins were placed on edges of ridges. Our group had several 20-40 ft putts roll back to our feet because of the slopes despite rolling up to within 2-3 ft of hole. Lots of 3 and 4 putts which slowed pace of play right down. Not sure if the course is normally windy, but we had strong winds the day we played which made it really tough.
Staff were friendly, but nobody loaded our bags onto carts at the bag drop and we had to ask directions to putting green and first tee. No starter on duty.
Worth playing once for $22 deal, but not rushing back anytime soon.
The Oaks Club at Valencia
Played On 03/06/2017Challenging TPC layout... worth an outing
Played in an SCGA member outing for $65. Great value. (worth the $90 for the Mastercard deal too).
Shotgun start, got round in good time. Not too far between greens and tees.
The practice facilities were good.
The 18 holes wind their way up and down the hillside (with some spectacular views over the Valencia valley) returning to the clubhouse at 9 and 18. Wind gets up early afternoon and can be a 1-2 club wind.
Greens were running very fast and firm. Really needed a delicate touch on the short game. Had several 3 putts getting used to the fast greens.
A couple of quirky long holes on the back 9 (around 14-15 I think). Most of the difficulty is visible and fair on this challenging course. Nice finishing hole in front of the clubhouse.
Overall, it was in great condition given the recent rains.
