Lakes of Taylor Golf Club
Played On 08/28/2019Nice but not elite
We saw this on a list of top metro Detroit courses and made the trip to see for ourselves. It was a weekday afternoon so pace of play was quick because there were so few people out there. It’s a nice layout with a lot of interesting holes and it’s very well maintained. The only negative was that the greens were fairly beaten up and there weren’t any holes that were all that unique. Best downriver, clearly but I don’t think it warrants being on a list of best in metro Detroit.
Brae Burn Golf Club
Played On 07/15/2019Best shape ever
I’ve always thought this was a great property that needed better care. This was the best shape I’ve ever seen this course in. The greens ran fast and true. The fairways were in better shape than I ever remember. There’s definitely room for improvement but I’m far more likely to return after his visit.
Whitmore Lake Golf Links
Played On 07/13/2019Nice course
Played here for just the second time. Really nice course. Well maintained. Lot’s of direction changes on holes, water, sand, marsh and other obstacles to make it interesting. If anything were lacking, it’s on the short side and there aren’t a lot of elevation changes. Good value. Will definitely be back.
Eagle Crest Golf Club
Played On 09/16/2018great course
This is an underrated course in metro Detroit. Great layout, lots of water, stunning views, challenging greens, always in great shape. One thing I often overlook is the staff. Course workers, rangers, the pro shop and bar staff, everybody is really friendly and keeps things moving along. A particular nod to Mike, who is often the starter there. He's friendly, he keeps people moving, he's accommodating and he's enthusiastic about us enjoying the round. If you've not been to Eagle Crest, you should try it out.
Woods/Meadows at Mystic Creek Golf Club
Played On 09/03/2018Declining
This is a nice piece of property and the lakes 9 has some really interesting holes. But the upkeep of this place has just gone down hill seemingly further and further every year. Fairways, tee boxes, greens and rough areas that should be in play we’re all in terrible shape. The greens are slower than anywhere else I’ve played in metro Detroit. The golf carts are even slower. The bunkers are filled with rocks and dirt. If you play in the morning, there’s a sprinkler going off in play on almost every hole. I’ll be back next year hoping for improvement but won’t hold my breath.
Eagle Crest Golf Club
Played On 08/26/2018changes
I usually play here a couple of times a year and this is the first time this year. A lot of changes to the course. Two of the toughest holes (2 and 11) have had trees removed that took a lot of the teeth out of those holes. Several other holes have had trees or greenery removed that have opened up the course quite a bit. Still a very tough course and one of the best in metro Detroit.
Idyl Wyld Municipal Golf Course
Played On 08/14/2018nice for what it is
For what it is -- a lower-end municipal course for beginners or people looking for cheap golf -- it's pretty nice. I played for the first time this year yesterday and the course was in the best shape I've seen it in in the 13 years I've been playing it. Lush and green and well-maintained throughout the property.
Coyote Golf Club
Played On 06/21/2018best in area
There are 9 really good public golf courses within 10 miles of Coyote (12 total). All things considered, Coyote is my favorite in the area. Great staff. Always in great condition. Pace of play is usually pretty good. A collection of unique holes with different challenges. It's right there in quality with Moose Ridge and Lyon Oaks, but without the prohibitive price.
Hilltop Golf Course
Played On 06/17/2018Unprepared
Grass clippings throughout the rough and fairways. The greens were a different speed on every other hole. Sand traps filled with rocky dirt. No garbage cans at any holes. Drink cart was empty every time it got to us. At the turn, nothing was ready to eat and the few drinks they had were room temperature. Including the 35 minutes past our tee time we waited to tee off, it was a 6:15 round. It was Fathers Day, they were way overbooked and unprepared for the mass of people on the tee sheet. Won’t be back.
Salem Hills Golf Club
Played On 06/05/2018much better
I had reviewed this course a couple of weeks ago and was disappointed in the conditions. Went back this week and all is forgiven. Course was in great shape and had a much more enjoyable round.
Woods/Meadows at Mystic Creek Golf Club
Played On 05/28/2018Improvements
Hadn't played here in a couple of years and remembered it being in pretty bad shape. Much better condition. Greens, fairways, bunkers, everything was much better.
Salem Hills Golf Club
Played On 05/26/2018hope this was a fluke
I'd not been to Salem Hills in a few years. It's always been an old school course with a nice layout and some unique holes. The greens were in OK shape. However, there were grass clippings throughout the fairways and rough. Combined with the long and thick rough, it took forever to find a ball once it got off the fairway. Bunkers had barely any sand in them. It had been days since rain but there were several places with standing water in playable areas. This had always been a nice course and I hope I was just seeing a rough weekend because if I go back and the course condition isn't better, it will be the last time. I wouldn't recommend it to another golfer based on what I saw Saturday.
Fox Creek Golf Course
Played On 04/28/2018GPS
New for 2018, they’ve got new carts with GPS. a nice addition. They’ve also replaced all the flags and the cups in the holes. Course is the same as always, which is nice for a municipal course. Great staff.
Beacon Hill Golf Club
Played On 08/19/2017those houses are close
The course has elevation changes, water, lots of dog legs, varied length holes, some scoring opportunities, some really hard holes. It's a very nice course. Pace was so so. Only issue is that it's very residential. You could legitimately see someone teeing off and ending up in someone's yard (or worse, hitting a house) on about 6 holes. The course was in better shape over the weekend then it's been in awhile.
Whispering Willows
Played On 08/15/2017pretty good for a municipal course
I play this course a lot mostly because of convenience. It's near the freeway, it's easy to get a tee time, the staff is friendly, it's usually a quick round, especially during the week. But it's also a very nice course. The greens are almost always faster than they look, there are a handful of really challenging holes and there are some scoring opportunities. I wish it were longer or had another set of tees in back.
Huntmore Golf Club
Played On 08/09/2017nice course
It's a good course, very nicely maintained greens with some speed, interesting layout.
Eagle Nest Golf Club
Played On 07/21/2017wonderful, for what it is
This is not elite golf. If you want that, pay three times as much and go to Barefoot Resort. But after six straight days of playing top-ranked courses and paying top dollar, this was a nice break for the last round of our vacation. The greens were in great shape; through the green needed a lot of work. Overall, a nice enough course, and well worth the money.
Garland Lodge & Golf Resort - Monarch Course
Played On 08/10/2016long and challenging
Having played the much easier Reflection and Fountains courses the day before, this was a step up in terms of course length, difficulty and beauty. This and Swampfire are clearly the two best courses on the property.
Beacon Hill Golf Club
Played On 07/29/2015fun course
There's not a straight, flat hole on this course. There's an elevation change, a water hazard or a dog leg on almost every hole. The exceptions are a par 4 that's meant to be almost driveable and a par 3 with a pine tree that sits directly between the tee and green. Greens are challenging but get a little hacked up from the patrons. The course goes through back yards in a subdivision and the houses can seem a little close. Pace of play can be a problem from time to time.
Glen Oaks Golf Course
Played On 07/28/2015nice course, slow play
I'd play here more often if I could get the round in under 5 hours. The course is nice with some interesting holes, some challenges and some opportunities to score. There's no driving range and the practice green is located a long way from the first tee or the club house. Part of the slowdown comes from the slow service in the grill at the turn.
