Darrington Golf Club
Played On 11/10/2022Course playing well
Despite early winter weather conditions, course was playing well. Winter mats and normal greens. Slow pace on my visit, waited at least 5 minutes at every tee box.
One new experience: after my tee shot into par 3 18th, groundsman nipped in and moved position of the hole!!! Anyome have a r&a ruling kn that one!!??
Waterton Park Golf Club
Played On 11/04/2022Positive first visit
Finally found a slot to play Waterton and it was a positive experience. Winter tee boxes and fairway mats in play - this significantly reduced length of course and affected gameplay for me personally. Some nicely designed holes. Overall impressed and will return next spring/summer. One quibble, there were several holes where signposting to tees could be much better... Followed 'next tee' sign twice to find ourselves at wrong tee box!
Scarborough North Cliff Golf Club
Played On 07/23/2022Engaging course and fine club house
First time playing NCGC. Stunning coastal views from clubhouse, first tee and practice area. Course lays out inward from coast but good variety of holes. Trees aplenty to punish errant tee shots, greens in fair condition. Enjoyed the round, will return, and vfm throguh golfnow.
Penrith Golf Club
Played On 04/17/2022Greens not yet ready for season
Overall enjoyable experience - Pro shop and members friendly and allowed me to play throguh. Pace of play was good, surprised that I completed my round in under 2.75hours despite competition groups still on the course.
There was a strong breeze that made for some challenging club/shot selection which I expect is normal for such an elevated course.
The big let down was the condition of the greens. Preferred lies were still on but the greens preparation must be behind schedule. All the greens had recently been aerated and the grass was long and rolled so it was nigh impossible to get a true roll on the surface. Even putts of 3 feet would deflect off line.
All in all, I would play again given the opportunity but in my opinion there are better alternatives in the area.
KP Club
Played On 05/31/2021KP Nuts about this course
Played KP several times. Course and weather conditions were perfect on this visit. Outside area of Clubhouse extended and excellent for food and drink in the sun.
Scarborough South Cliff Golf Club
Played On 05/30/2021Pleasure to play
Wonderful variety of holes, visually stunning, potential for a good score but pitfalls at every turn. Will be returning for South cliff Open.
Drax Golf Club
Played On 04/03/2021Layout doesn't work
There is a 5 min walk aside a busy road between car park and course.
First few holes are pleasant, later there 6 holes that have shared tee boxes and greens which makes for congestion and confusion amongst players.
Greens were not good when I played but should improve.
Lots of waste ground adjoining course and rubble across the course which isn't a desirable feature!
Overall enjoyed the visit and may play again, reasonable VFM.
Windermere Golf Club
Played On 08/30/2021Scenic course with quirky layout
I havw to start with my lasting impression of my experience at Windermere GC: some of the slowest playing members i have ever encountered, who deliberately contravene the rules of general play to rile visitors. I found the majority of members to be rude and arrogant.
That aside, the course layout os quirky with more blind shots than a practice ove round with stevie wonder. Course was in good condition and was enjoyable.
Clubhouse food and drink were very good.
Low Laithes Golf Club
Played On 04/25/2021Course is disrepair
First time playining the course.
Some nice holes, trees and slopes make the course a true test.
Unfortunately the play ahead was very slow and groups didn't seem to understand pace of play or the impact of slow play on groups behind.
The greens have become diseased and were very patchy and the roll was as poor as I have encountered.
Significant areas of the course under repair and flooding in patches.
Course layout is a bit criss-cross in places.
I doubt I will play the course again.
Normanby Hall Country Park
Played On 04/10/2021Great course but pace of play is awful
Pro allowed me to head out early so I too the opportunity. Now I appreciate a single golfer has no standing on the course, but there were two groups ahead from a golf society who never got close to the group in front. Groups behind me abandoned their tree ounds or switched to other holes. I waited over a 1h15m on fee boxes!
Course is a lovely layout, greens were so-so, faorways average to slow, course generally in good condition.
Wouldn't book again if the society policy stands, but the course itself is one I could play regularly.
Todmorden Golf Club
Played On 10/07/2020Hills are alive with the sound of golf balla
First time visitor to Todmorden. Situated high above the town, there are panoramic views of the pennines from every hole. It's a physically exerting course and most holes play up or down hill. Thisbalso makes for some tricky lies and club choice is a constant test. Greens in good condition despite recent winter treatment and ground maintenance team was on course working bunkers and greens.
The Clubhouse was locked on the day I played and I relied on the hospitality of a member to dig out a score card and direct me to the first tee.
I played at my pace front 9 but encountered some holds up on second loop - that's the nature of 9 hole courses.
Amazing views and a constant wind factor even on a calm pleasant day. Would like to return when the club house is open.
Leeds Golf Club
Played On 09/30/2020Natural contours make for a complete challenge
First time playing 'Cobble Hall'. Despite the rain, the fairways were firm and a good tee shot was rewarded....however there were too few in our game. The course is framed by nature trees and combined with a long first cut penalise wayward shots. The deep rise and fall of the later holes present an unusual challenge and knowing how to play different lies is a must. Greens had recently been aerated so there was an occasional bobble on putts, which didn't detract from our appreciation of some fine McAlistair designed greens. Beyond the first half dozen pipe openers, the holes are varied and in particular a couple of steep uphill greens are a test. The final three holes offer a chance to bolster the stableford score but only if you play them well!
Clubhouse hospitality was good, considering current restrictions. Hope to return again next Spring.
Bingley St. Ives Golf Club
Played On 07/20/2020Hidden Gem
I have played Bingley (St Ives) several times - but not in the last decade. The course is as good now as it was then - plus there has been some noticable investment in landscaping, tee boxes, greens. The course was in first-rate condition.
The course has plenty of variety and - whether it trees, OOB, wispy long grass borders or moorland heather - the coruse rewards the accurate player and is punitive for the errant tee shot. I scored well by keeping my driver in the bag and favouring the accuracy of woods off the tees.
Loved the course and experience. Clubhouse bar wasn't open (Monday) but otherwise everything was perfect. Recommended.
Pike Hills Golf Club
Played On 07/13/2020Drive. Pitch. Putt. Repeat.
Perhaps my cool review is reflective of my poor performance on the course. I would rather play Pike Hills as a club member than say a challenging links course week in, week out... however the first-time (perhaps one-time) visitor is seeking to be wow-ed, a special experience. For most of the round, you're cognisant of being adjacent to the A64 - in fact several drive lines run perilously close to the road.
PHGC was in good nick, well maintained, greens mostly receptive and running quick despite recent rain.
The layout is mostly up and down - mix of open and narrow fairways. There's nothing visually dramatic and pulse-racing, but it's a nice track netherless. The fine three holes involve criss-crossing of fairways, which is like finding a parking space in a busy multi-storey car park. The 15th (i think) PAR 3 has the car park on the left - just where i'd parked my vehicle in splendid isolation (now I know why!)
Clubhouse is nice and the drinks and cakes were first rate. I would return.
Halifax Golf Club
Played On 07/06/2020The Essence of Golf
Having researched the course before play, I had high expectations for the day - and I wasn't disappointed. Three days after the round and I still have a buzz.
Halifax is a gen of a course - as you'd expect from a James Braid / Alistair McKensie creation.
It's fair to say if I had been asked for an opinion of the course after four holes, it might have been unfavourable: my partner had lost two balls and I had started 6,4,6,8. I recovered to shoot 84 on a moderately windy day.
The course is lovingly scuplted from the natural valley in such a way that the course enhances the beautiful landscape. If you thrive on traditional golf - or simply enjoy a break from the modern flat park/tree/manmade hazard model - then Halifax is a joy to behold.
The local members must be golfer/mountain-goat half breeds to play on a routine baiss - it leaves you aching in a rewarding way. A member showed me his wrist monitor that indicated the aggregate vertical climb was over 80 storeys! The views from low and high in the valley are worth the effort.
There are a couple of very short Par 3s but otherwise the moorland course meaders up the slopes of the valley criss-crossing the broolks and streams. It's a punitive course if you miss fairways or mis-club, which is easily done as the wind direction changes every few holes. The 17th is fun - but I loved every hole from 8 through 18.
Minor grumbles - orientation is difficult for the first-timer, we needed the help of a member to locate the 6th green; the practice net was still closed (probably as a result of Covid); the target marker on 18th fairway stands adjacent to the first tee - that might be a good line from the teebox, but from the fairway it's a trap for the newbie.
Greens were in very good condition and running true and fast-ish considering recent weather.
I will be back to play ASAP - hoping the weather is as kind, as I can imagine a strong wind would make the course even longer.
Forest of Galtres Golf Club
Played On 06/18/2020Nice Parkland Course
First time playing at FoG. Unfortunately, the weather was heavy rain for 3/4 of the round. The course was a decent test, mostly flat course with some water features but as always hitting the fairways was the way to a good score. Greens moderate-to-slow (unsuprising after several days of rain) but rolling well and well maintained. Will return - in the hope of drier conditions,
Scalm Park Golf Club
Played On 06/01/2020Great value
Scalm Park was first recommended to me by an Angler and Cricketer - who happened to play golf. Scalm Park is a caravaning.camping leisure complex with on-site fishing and golf. It's a tidy short course - there are some close parallel fairways and a higher-than-average number of casual golfers so you need to exercise extra caution as the odd errant ball lands on your fairway. Overall the course is fun - there is a water course on one side and the odd fishing lake doubling as a water hazard. he fairways are mostly narrow but without penalty for straying onto the next fairway. The course is suited to walking and keeps the better golfer alert too.
(When Covid-19 is behind us), the clubhouse offers great pub food and a good choice of beer. There's also a driving range.
Good value for money - played three times to date.
