great views

wonderful looking course from the tees.
lots of tee choices for all level of ability.
very poorly conditioned traps. a mixture of dirt and sand. suggests that the course is having financial
trouble when it cannot maintain the bunkers.
extremely challenging course and the beginner, poor
player or someone used to flat lies is going to suffer.
anyone with a disability or problems reaching tees
and greens is also going to have a very hard time
with darkhorse. if you are skilled enough to place the ball and can play your appropriate tees and remain patient on severely sloped greens you will love this course.

fun house

another del webb development course which
allows players to have a god time with tee selection
for their ability. some very challenging greens
with lots of slope and a fair amount of speed.
course will not wear you out, but allow you to make
some pars, maybe even a birdie or so. will continue
to take advantage of the local del webb development
courses

once great public course

a fun place to play, that remains slow as it was
when this area offered few courses to play. fairways
were in poor condition, but the rest was as good as
i've seen it in the past 30 years. offers several tees
for players of all levels.
they need to be more aware that they are not the only
choice these days. the location alone might be enough
to keep ancil hoffman busy. can see some visible
improvements in cart paths and interestingly they
have the best flags of any course around. maybe because of the new gps.

never say anything bad if that's all you have to say

given the title the best thing about the course was the staff, who did the best they can given the course condition.
whoever is in charge of irrigation at the Roseville city
courses needs to look at their neighbors to see how
a golf course should be maintained.
it is terrible to go to either city course during this
brutally hot summer and find mud on the ball shot
after shot hole after hole.

much improved facility

very pleased to find the course in so much better condition than a year ago. all the work on the tee
boxes, traps and greens has paid off with a much
more pleasing facility. lots of care to bring this course
up to the standard of it competition. will continue to patronize as long as they keep it in good condition.

challenging greens

excellent golf course with at least 5 tee choices
for any caliber player. greens with lots of slope
and break. back nine is much more exposed to the wind that the front. if you use a cart gps gives nice description of where you should place the ball
off the tee and into the green. nice practice area.
over a 2 hour drive for me so it will not be a regular
place for me, but for players in the san jose area this is a wonderful place to play golf. both courses offer a lot of fun trying to make your record number of pars.

strawberry fields

a wonderful golf course in the general area of Monterey. the course has some of the most challenging greens you will find anywhere.
greens speeds are similar to murfield village
outside of Columbus ohio. very true and well conditioned greens, and fairways where you will find good lies that make you fell comfortable hitting to the small greens. lots of elevation changes especially on the front nine. anyone in that area for a visit or people who live nearby need to give this golf course a try. surrounded by strawberry fields as far as you can see.

great greens

had been quite some time since I had played wildhawk.
just beginning to play a lot after years of illness. greens were in
super shape with decent speed. the traps were being worked on in some places, but those that were playable were in good shape with a deep cushion of sand. pace of play was excellent
as we were 1st out and virtually had the course to ourselves.

quirky set up

rancho canada is a carmel valley golf course with an excellent practice area and 36 holes. this is a long established facility
that is quite narrow and cramped on some holes. greens seemed soft and spongy, but kept a decent speed. biggest attraction is the carmel area which almost always has beautiful
weather to play golf

course with character

nice course which is offering blended scorecards for
tee selection nearer to a players ability. recent work on the traps
has upgraded that part of the course significantly. greens with
gentle slopes that run much faster than they appear. a good challenge for anyone who loves some variety in their golf courses. need to hit a lot of different clubs. cannot reasonably expect to just hit driver after driver. very nice practice area.
one can actually practice all kinds of sand shots for example.

foothill setting

a course with many different teeing grounds for all levels
of play. challenges include water, sand, sloping fariways, and undulating greens. only problem i found was the pace of play
was furnereal. as the 3rd group out on a friday morning i would
expect to take no longer than 4 hours. ran 45 minutes longer.
gps system was the best i've seen. only reason for this slow a pace must be the cart policy which greatly restricts where the carts are permitted. anyone who likes golf will enjoy the challenge of the ridge if they can put up with the slow pace.

interesting layout

very unusual golf course with lots of mounds throughtout.
makes for some uneven lies, and undulating greens.
found the course to be in lesser condition than the last time
i played. not as well maintained, but still worth your time, just because it is a course unique to this area. demands a player
use all their clubs and imagination around the greens.
will be back again and again.

top five

this was my first opportunity to play black horse, and i would
put it in my all time top 5 with murfield village, pebble beach
and cypress point. just an excellent facility in every way a golfer
can want. the course is visually appealing and very challenging.
has some short par 4's and various size 3's and 5's. lots of sand
and elevation changes to add to the challenge. an absolute must
play for those visiting the monterey area. also has an excellent
practice area and a very helpful staff.

senior tees

This course has new ownership and is being better
tended. great to see most tees moved forward for
ordinary play, as this is a step up in difficulty from it's competition. was disappointed in the pace of play, as
the course proved difficult for two of our foursome.
all golf courses place demands on the player to control
their golf ball to some extent. whitney oaks requires players
to have a bit more ability.

changes to provide a challenge. lots of birds, especially
geese and some new egrets to see. some traps and trees

great green speed

Had as great time playing this course.
am from out of the area so i won't play there
more than once a year or so, but it is a nice
place, well maintained with greens that have
very subtle breaks and are quite fast. you better
bring all your putting skills.
