Used to be so good…. But

Used to be so good….

Played many rounds here over the years and this is the first time I was genuinely concerned for the shape the course is in. I get we had some rain the past couple of weeks, but other courses I played were fine so I assumed as such.

But a huge reason why I’m giving this a one star is because I had wrote about my experience in a Facebook group for golfers in CT.

Apparently the manager didn’t take that feedback very well and decided to call me. Sure he was giving me an explanation as to why the conditions were the way they were but then he proceeded on telling me that I can’t write things like that.

Didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to post honest feedback where others can see it.

Where it gets funnier is he assumed because I’m “young” that’s why I did that… but I’m 40 so there goes that.

Honestly, to be hounded like that and told that I can’t write reviews about them where others can see is actually quite ridiculous.

It was also extremely condescending on his part which I don’t appreciate and quite frankly, just inappropriate.

The real kicker is me paying $38 dollars for a “championship course”. Yes the layout is great but if the conditions were near championship level, I would happily pay more than that,

But thankfully between the course being in rough shape and the manager inappropriately calling me to complain about a review I wrote where others agreed with me.

Makes it a lot easier for me never to want to go back.

This surely deserves no stars. In his words “ we don’t need your business” … well feeling is mutual.

Look elsewhere

Played here years ago..

Didn’t remember what I thought about the course so I decided to deal time it.

Thank goodness it was a deal time.

Greens were surprisingly good. Furry but good with lots of potential.

Staff was great and very accommodating even though I was late.

The course itself is in disarray. The stretch of three holes by the water after 2 have more dirt than grass on fairways.

Tees were mostly dirt boxes. Was near impossible to get a flat hitting area.

Lots of bumps on holes that had grass on fairways.

The layout is really odd and really punitive.

Narrow fairways, blind after blind and a s curved 605 yd par 5 and god knows how many elevated greens.

The whopper was hole 2 that’s built next to a massive hill and has a fairway thinner than a pencil.

Wondering what’s gone through the minds of the people that designed this place.

Avoiding at all costs, even if they do ever get their conditions right.

We’re very disappointed to learn that we did not live up to your expectations. The course conditions are a direct impact of the drought conditions we’ve experienced recently. It is not due to the lack of attention of the maintenance staff. We're still waiting on that much needed rain. At Somers National, we heavily rely on mother nature to generate enough natural water to feed the ponds situated throughout the course. Again, we are sorry we did not provide a positive experience. We are looking forward to better weather conditions in a few weeks. We hope you will give us another opportunity. At any time, please feel free to contact us at info@somersnational.com or 914-342-3273

Only if

There are a couple of positives.

First, the staff is great.

Ended up running a little late for a deal time, but they got me out no problem..

The other redeeming quality is the greens. Little furry, but once they cut, they will be quite good and true.

As for the ugly.

- fairways are virtually non existent throughout the course.
Could be because I played after a rainy night, but it’s mostly lumps and bumps all over as you can all see.

- the layout of the course is a bit strange. So many areas play extremely tight and other wider fairways all have blinds or crazy elevated greens.

- tee boxes in most holes don’t have a flat hitting area. Some were even straight up dirt. Yes, dirt.

Again, greens were amazing and the staff was wonderful.

But doubt I’m ever going back.

Windy weather

Good Course but could be better.

Pros
- Pete Dye design
- Lots of holes are forgiving if tee shots aren't great.
- Some blind shots make up for a bit of a challenge.
- Greens are quite good with lots of sloping.
- Staff is very friendly
- Pace of play was right on point at 4 hours

Cons
- This probably was because of the time I played, but the fairways where rather dry.
- Because of the driy fairways the bounces were crazy at times.
- Greens rolled well but speed was inconsistent.

Overall, I would come back when conditions are top notch, it has been a dry summer so I completely understand why the course was playing the way it was. Layout is wide and open and not the most difficult course I played.

Wow

-PROS
- Tough course layout with lots of blind shots.
- Not for the faint of heart (literally) when walking which I did with a stand bag.
- Plenty of shot shaping opportunity.
- Strategic play required.
- Soooooo much bang for the buck.

-CONS ( mostly nit picky but not enough to deter me)
- Green speed is rather inconsistent.
- Lots of ant mounds on numerous greens.
- Strangely there was a group of two that jumped in front of us since they went to get food. (Not a big deal but maybe something to think about)

Overall I would definitely go back knowing the course now. Excellent value and with that understandably comes longer rounds.

Great day at Willow Creek.

- Staff is super friendly.
- The course was in great impeccable shape.
- The fairways were nice and soft.
- The layout gets more challenging in the back 9.
- Pace of play was above decent with 4.5 hours to complete a round.

- The only downside were the greens were quite bumpy, but that could have alot been since we played in the afternoon.

- Not sure why others this year were hemming and hawing. But excellent round of golf overall.
