Long Challenge by Arnie

Great course that plays very long. Tees, greens, and fairways were in excellent condition. The holes are fairly straight forward with few surprises. You'll see the challenges that await you from the tee. The par three holes are fairly similar in length and design. You'll enjoy the round and the experience.

Nick Challenges You!

This is a challenging but fun course to play in the Valley. Faldo has presented a visually intimidating collection of holes that will make you think. Don't worry however, unless you fly the ball into a bunker chances are it will run by or away since Sir Nick has sculpted the bunkers to not so much capture rolling balls as repel them. The tees, fairways and greens were all above average. Truly a beautiful course that you will enjoy playing.

Lovely Time, Lovely People, Lovely Course

Dove Valley is an excellent value for golf in the Valley. Staff is friendly and helpful. Practice area spacious and excellent. Course was in excellent condition, tees, fairways and greens. The front nine presents everything in front of you (even a water hazard) but the back nine features doglegs and carries. Think before you smash on the back nine. You will enjoy your time at this facility.

Super Layout - Needs Some Help

Great layout and great staff but the course is overcharging. The tees for the par 3 holes were very poor and while that is a hazard of these lily pad tees I expect more for the $ they are charging. All of the greens were very thin and sparse of grass. The roll was okay but once again hard to justify the price they are charging. People are outstanding, practice area outstanding, and the fairways superb! The design is great until the par three holes are considered. Three are drop shots from extremely high elevation, I mean extremely high, which results in massive ball marks that pock mark the greens. They should hire marshals whose job is to make sure people repair their ball marks on the par three holes. Love the setting and the design but overpriced at this moment in time.

The Eagle

This course is a good value course for the area. The greens were the best part of the course. Tees were thin and so were parts of the fairways. There are some fun and challenging holes and the GPS system is necessary and useful. The par 3's were all very similar in my opinion in terms of length and shape. 18 is very confusing no one told us they have two greens! The GPS measures to the second which is not visible from the fairway of the hole. We played to the short hole because we had no idea there was a second green and the GPS confusedus even more.

Try the Fox!

This course is the old private Cobblestone that you can now play. The tees were good, fairways good, thin and a few spots were "drowned/dead" from all the rain (picked up mud on every shot so not much roll) and the greens were above average. They are redoing the sand in the bunkers and they are challenging!
The front nine is tough and a little more challenging than the back. Hole 2 and 3 are excellent. Most holes will make you think before you tee off. The back nine is more "typical Florida" with water left and right of the drive or crossing in front of you. 18 is kinda gimicky with a par 5 around the lake. You need to add GPS in the carts to figure out yardages. shooting yardages takes awhile and it doesn't help that the practice area is so close to the dogleg making the optics confusing
All in al a great time and experience..

Always a Good Walk!

The Highlands course is always a good time for golfers. We have played it numerous times this fall. Easily affordable and accessible it's a little more interesting than its partner Anderson course. The front nine is an easy walk after the opening hill on hole 1. The holes are interesting and the greens in very good shape. The back nine starts with a strange combo of par 5, 3, 5, 3 and finishes with all par 4s. It is harder to walk with a bunch of up, then down, then up holes. The greens are very good and you do have think before just pulling driver every-time out. Some of the newer holes have more interesting bunkering than the older holes.

The Back Nine Can Be A Watery Grave

Tallwood is a great tract with a super back nine. The front has three par threes that require different clubs. The rest of the front nine has some interesting holes and requires you to think before just pulling driver every-time. Number 8 is a great strategy hole. The back nine is the real challenge with water on every hole except 18 and the lone par 3. Once again driver is not always the correct club and your approach shots must be precise. Not much movement in the greens but they are well protected. A ton of length was added a few years ago but really didn't make much of a difference.Improved bunkering in terms of line of sight and protection could make this one of the best courses east of the river. Right now the bunkers are just large instead of being true hazards. The back nine is definitely not for beginners.

It Is What It Is

This is what golf was like in the 1920s. Hit the ball hit it again to a postage stamp green. Putt and move on. Some of the holes are fun some are ok. The course should be played to appreciate the history of golf. Just check out the wall of sod on #6 as a hazard and think why nobody has the guts to do that today. Make sure to walk this course and enjoy the views and sounds.

The Greens are the Key!

Rolling Meadows is all about the greens. The greens are full of dead elephant humps and slopes as tough as Vail. The course is easily walkable but by the back you will be tired. The back is the real challenge, much longer than the front. Narrow and long tee shots are required on the back. Not any really memorable homes but still a major challenege. You must put the ball in the correct spot on many of the greens or you will three putt.

Yes It's Back

You can feel safe going to the "Ridge" again. This is not a waste of $. The holes are still extremely difficult but the horrendous conditions are gone. There are still some problem areas but the greens are back and the bunkers at least have sand. Some of the holes just need work. The design never really worked and people just found it too much of a mess. Hole #2 still has a ridiculously hard approach to a green that has no bail out area with a cliff on one side and water on the other three. #5 is a mess, the bunker on the back hill was removed but the hole needed it even though the shot was hard to get out of it on to the green. The back nine also has some holes that will perplex you and make you say what were they thinking, especially 17 and 18. Nonetheless it will make you think and work hard for a good score. Give it another chance.

Best in CT

In my opinion this is the best course in CT. Better than your private courses or tour tracks. A member once told me it is 17 great holes of golf followed by #18 and he was right. #18 will keep you perplexed for years. People tell me the smart play is to hit three 5 irons but I can't play it that way either. Another member told me they ran out of dynamite and that's why 18 is the way it is. Whatever, you will enjoy this course and wonder how to play it under all the conditions that New England can throw at you. Each hole is a delight, bunkering on #1 great, #2 stay to the right, #3 just a great tee shot with a blind 2nd, #4 is a beast, #5 and #9 spectacular par 3s. The back is just as good. You will remember every hole which to me is the test of a great golf course. The food and people after the round at Widdie's is also great.Do what you can to play this course and if you figure out #18 let us know with a post!

Classic

This is a course from the Golden Age of design. It is not very long. You will hit mostly wedges and 9 irons into the greens. There is room to miss off the tee and the greens are moderate in terms of slope, many have a ridge running through them. It is an easy walk accept the front nine ends as far away from the clubhouse as possible. The holes are interesting and the trademark is the back to back par 5s on both the front and back. They are three shots for most people. The par 3s could use some variety, 2 are downhill, one is up hill, one is level. The bunkering is not consistent from hole to hole and could stand a historical reexamination and restoration. They should look to Keney Park, an Emmet course that has undergone a superb renovation. You will enjoy the closing three holes, 16-18 are great (I miss the willow on 18) and 6 is probably the best par 4 in CT.

A Classic Comeback

Winnapaug is worth a trip now and hopefully in the future. This Donald Ross course has excellent greens but the rest is still shaggy. The question is are the owners putting the $ back into the course? Any course by the shore in RI beach turf charge a good sum in the summer. The competition in the area for your dollar is now steeper than ever. Winnapaug must improve the tees and fairways to compete. Way too many bare spots on the fairways. The greens are tiny and you can see that over time they have gotten smaller as the distance between greens and supposed greenside bunkers has increased. Ross laidout a fine tract and the fact you get to see the water on holes 10-13 is still a treat. Please give the greenskeeper and staff the funds they need to keep bringing it back!

Solid

There is nothing spectacular about Hickory Ridge but the course is fair and fun to play. Greens are in very good shape and the fairways and tees are fine. Nothing super memorable about any of the holes. Drive it, no fairway bunkers to really scare you, chase it, hit it again. If you can work the ball off the tee the course will be a little easier for you. This course is always crowded with college golf teams, members and the public. It moves along but be warned some people say it can be rather slow at certain times.

NO

It's a disaster. It is mostly dirt and sand. What was once a private course in superb condition is a disaster. Without funds it won't get better but why would you pay anything to putt on sand and drive from dirt. The layout was never great, many back and forth holes, and now there is really nothing to bring you there.

All About Restoration

If you want to play a really successful restoration look no farther than the front nine at Keney. The front nine was built first by Emmet and the holes are fun and interesting. Maintenance has been consistent since the restoration and the greens were great. Greens are fairly flat but also true and fast when I played. Yes the holes go back and forth at the end of the front nine and the church pews and road hole bunkering are copies but they fit in well and are true hazards. It was windy when we played and two of our foursome ended up in the road hole bunker on 9 presenting a great challenge. The back nine was in excellent condition but the layout is more modern than classic. The holes that close out this nine are back and forth like the front and finishing with the par 3 18th is really a let down. Still, they have done a great job providing golf for people on what use to be a natural disaster. The restored clubhouse is a treat. The fairway/green of number one is just like Pinehurst #2 and much chaper than $450. it costs to play that tract. Keney is an enjoyable time, not the most challenging or interesting but nothing to denigrate unless your're some private country club snob.

What Once Was

This was once an 18 hole course that delivered in all areas, especially fun. Since it has gone to 9 holes it has been a roller-coaster. Some days good, some days bad. The greens are furry most of the time and the delineation between rough and fairway hard to determine. I'm sure they do the best they can with what they have but it does suffer. Hole 1 remains unchanged but the netting down the right side is unattractive. The second hole has as many homes down the right but no netting. Why? Hole 4 makes no sense at all while #5 is pretty much a remaining stalwart from the original. The island green at 8 remains but is such a large target now from such a short range that the hole is really uninteresting which is pretty hard to do for an island green. The tees are very poor. Even for a quick 9 in the area there are better options.

Better Than What They Say

I don't know why people bad mouth this course. It has some interesting parts and some boring parts. The conditions are always good (sometimes in the spring flooding can be a problem) and the greens are usually smooth and true. I like the new nine the most. Hazards are few but the style is more prairie like than anything around the area. I think it is a good deal and the it is easily walkable if you want to save some $

Just Boring

I find Topstone to be slog that produces no memorable holes that really stand out. The conditions are always good and the greens fair, if fairly flat. It just that besides #9 none of the holes capture my imagination or respect. I'm talking about a lot of down and back holes that are all fairly straight with uninteresting bunkers. It's not horrible, it's just not memorable. The price is also out of whack for what you are getting. It's really no better than any other muni in the area.
