Waikoloa Village Golf Club
Played On 08/21/2017Ho Hum
Course was very dried out...fairways sparse, and we had to move the ball around to find some grass, the bunkers are ground lava rock. The layout was pretty fun, and with a lot of TLC it could be a nice course. It seems that there are a lot of young local types that play here with a limited knowledge of golf etiquette. The really great courses on the Big Island are private, tied to the Four Seasons or $175 to play, so your choices are rather limited.
Gatlinburg Golf Course
Played On 03/20/2014Memorable
Have you ever played a course where all of the holes were were, for lack of a better word, generic. Well, that is definately not true of Gatlinburg! It is picturesque, challenging, & scenic, and every hole is an adventure. The par three with the 200 ft. drop just about gave me vertigo. But, if you have a hip or knee problem, you might want something a bit flatter. The day we play was "cart path only" and you need to be part billy goat to navigate it.
The course was immaculate, even though it was very early in the season. The greens are fair and true, the fairways friendly (not too narrow), but this course is not for the fainthearted or the 4X/year player. It is long and difficult, and the single digiter (Hubby) will surely play 4 to 6 shots over their handicap. As a 20, it ate my lunch. So, if your ego can't take it, at least enjoy the beauty of the setting.
