Golf Club at Cinco Ranch
Played On 03/20/2024Sanded greens
Took a while to adjust putting on the sanded greens.
Also it appeared that mowing of the fairways was a couple days overdue. There was a noticeable lack of roll. Traps were in rough shape with mud and some standing water. On a positive note, the Marshall does an outstanding job as does the crew in the cart barn.

This course shows its teeth when it gets breezy. Lost golf balls and higher scores…many water hazards. That said..,better greens you’ll never see…smooth and consistent.
Golf Club at Cinco Ranch
Played On 03/01/2024Late tee time
410 pm, I knew there would be no chance of finishing 18. That said, I still managed 11 holes on until dark. Greens were the best I’ve ever seen them…smooth and lightning fast. Glad I practiced some downhill putts. Marshall gets everyone organized despite some arriving late.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're glad to hear that you enjoyed the condition of the greens and that our marshal was able to keep things running smoothly. We appreciate your feedback and hope to see you again soon!

A nice stretch of weather drew me out to my favorite course. I’m partial to the links style and the way the two finishing holes are designed around the creek is just amazing. Greens were in surprisingly good shape considering the hard freezes the area went through. Fairways have a ways to go considering the clay soil and San Augustine grass being in hibernation. Preferred lies are the way to go around the clumps. The guys in the cart barn are cheerfully friendly. Number seven par 3 white tee into the wind was a bit too far for this 73 year old but that’s a me problem and I was enjoying teeing off with Justin my playing partner.

Six long months since playing my favorite course, I just had to get out there and break in my golf shoes.
My hot deal paired me up with another single and a pair…all younger golfers who could hit it a mile. It was a good group, I actually played better than I expected after a long layoff…I tend to elevate my game when playing along with better golfers. Didn’t lose a single ball. The greens were fast. Fairways in good shape. Only negative was the club house was closed but the Sterling clubhouse was more than adequate.
Greatwood Golf Club
Played On 11/16/2023Bumpy
First time playing Greatwood in a month and what jumps out at me is the condition of the greens. Very bumpy. If they can, the greens crew needs to roll them. Fairways are also bumpy but I can live with it.
Very little roll on the fairways. Area courses continue to recover from one of the worst droughts since 2011. I do like the layout…quite interesting and challenging. Especially the finishing two holes. Hole number 10 remains a personal puzzle…getting across in two for a 73 year old is quite the challenge. I almost made it this time.

Played On 11/08/2023Thanks Marshals!
The Marshall came out multiple times. Play speeded up noticeably each time, allowing me to finish in four hours and avoid the encroaching darkness at 525 pm. Course was in remarkable shape considering the continuing drought. Greens were true, no bare patches, consistently fast. Rough was fair, cut two inches and thick enough not to allow a ball to settle..

Played On 11/02/2023Spread the word
Imagine my surprise as a 23 year Air Force vet when my foursome discussed how much we paid for our round…that one of us got a veterans discount…and it wasn’t me. Most of use golf now to arrange tee times. Well I’m spreading the word…veterans, you’ll need to call instead of using golf now to get a significant discount. Similarly, Ive been told to call Tour 18 to get a nice senior discount. Hey golf now, how about some transparency on discounts?
About the course, my foursome finished in the dark about 7pm daylight time on a 224 pm tee time. Had to double up as they ran out of carts (on a Thursday). The two in the other cart were having a tough time keeping up. We had some women play through.

Need to work on my game after seldom playing this summer. Pace of play was too slow starting out. A foursome ahead of me was taking over five minutes on the green ahead of me on number four. So I skipped it after noticing the group ahead was already finishing number five. Saved that hole for later after my round. Another slow group on number 11 put me in a sandwich on the tee so I joined up with two fellas coming up behind (not same as the earlier slow pokes). We played at a good pace the rest of the way. Lots of bare patches in the fairways and the late afternoon greens were crunchy. This drought has been bad. Obvious that the grounds crew are hand watering around the greens when they can. My approach on nine plugged near the green from the runoff.

This course…like all the others I’ve played lately, shows signs of the excessive drought. Clay soil in the rough are cracked. That said, the traps were consistent, very playable.

Columbus Day yet good tee times were available at affordable prices. Course was not crowded until we went up against two slow foursomes beginning on # 14. Conditions were variable…good greens, fairways with bare patches and invasive grass patches. Evidence of watering restrictions during a severe drought.
BlackHorse Golf Club - North Course
Played On 09/26/2023Cart path only
Cart path for any senior not recommended on a day with light winds and a heat index (Hooks airport) touching 100. Obviously the excessive drought is effecting this course. I’m guessing watering fairways has been cut back due to county restrictions. This has produced a lack of good roll in the fairways. It was exhausting for this 73 year old having to locate and walk to balls across the fairways from cart paths. An ordeal I was glad was over. Not helping was the lack of refreshment carts. Thank God I had taken a couple of bottled waters with me. Ran out by the 16th after 5 pm and the auxiliary refreshment stand by the driving range had already closed. Avoid this course until cooler weather arrives!

It had been over three months since playing this course due to the extreme heat. Fairways are still recovering, greens are just as good as always.

I took a chance that the wind would mitigate the heat. Unfortunately, the wind died. Making matters worse…many fairways had automatic limiters on the carts despite ninety degree rule posted…making it cartpath only. Despite taking an extended break at the turn, the heat and fatigue sapped my strength and any control in the short game. Seniors should not play this course during heat advisories! You will be required to walk on many of the fairways…which appeared to be in good shape. See you in late September.
Grove/Plantation at Pecan Grove Plantation Country Club
Played On 07/27/2023Heat advisories over…game on!
Retired meteorologist here, did my homework and found some better rain chances to the south with the cooler temps thanks to the sea breeze. Greens were lush like they need to be due to recently dry conditions. Indeed on nine at Plantation after 7 pm a groundskeeper was busy watering the green, allowed me to play through. The clubhouse was a needed oasis…I advise everyone to take a. 10 minute break at the turn to cool down and refresh. Bare patches are forming…as they are most fairways in the area, but thanks to some Saharan dust, temps are closer to normal…golfers will return.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us, u8860059. We are going to pass on your feedback to the team. Thanks for visiting Grove/Plantation at Pecan Grove Plantation Country Club, and we hope to see you again in the future.

The clubhouse has been refurbished and looks great. The greens were understandably slow as they need protection from the searing summer heat…but rolled true and I sank a 25 footer on 14 for a birdie off the fringe. The fairway on 2 has been stressed so it’s cart path only on the long par five dog leg. This makes it tough on senior players in the heat walking to and from the ball to the cart…also slow.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We appreciate your feedback on the refurbished clubhouse and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the slow greens and the stressed fairway. We will take your comments into consideration to continuously improve the experience for all players.
Southwyck Golf Club
Played On 05/19/2023A good choice on a Friday
The best thing about playing Southwyck? The people you meet and the staff. This course identifies with the by your bootstraps clientele of achievers who are down to earth good people. They embraced the challenge of maintaining a course that’s affordable by sodding over bunkers and mowing down to create a hard and fast links style course. Yes the greens are bumpy, challenging to read….but imagine yourself playing a links course in Scotland. This is how golf started, courses like this one. By the way, the grill is a great way to enjoy a break while watching big screen sports with friends. Friendly staff too.
Thank you so much for leaving us with your feedback. We value our customer experience, so your review is important to us. We hope to see you back soon!

I started out having a hilarious conversation with the young lady at the snack bar. Having no change on me and wanting to take a cup of ice for a quarter tip, I handed her a one and she heard me say how about three Coors for a dollar? A guy behind me was bursting out laughing…calling it a classic who’s on first. Then I met two guys from Pearland on the tee, Chis and Aaron. Chris ended up shooting a personal best 81 from the whites., I met my goal of shooting an 88 from the mids. Lost two balls to water on #5 and another off the tee on 7 into a good wind. A birdie on 16 saved the day for me. I had adjusted to closing the club head into that wind. I’ll likely never see these guys again but we all thought it lucky we had that 318 tee time.
El Dorado at Quail Valley Golf Course
Played On 05/02/2023Week day
I was forewarned…greens were sanded and punched. That said, I did sink an 80 footer. Fairways were surprisingly not conducive to good roll outs. I had to move up to the red tees by the 5th hole. Layout is a problem on the 17th, 15th,, 6th and 5th with no safe ways to get around. Marshall’s are great.
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We appreciate your insights on the course conditions and will address these concerns with our maintenance team. We're glad to hear you had a positive experience with our staff members! We hope to see you back on the greens soon.
