Royal Dornoch Golf Club - Championship Course
Played On 08/08/2019Royal Dornoch - Bucket List Course
My round at Royal Dornoch will always go down for me as an all time golf experience. The condition of the course is top notch. The coastal environment lends itself to very lush conditions. The tee boxes, fairways, greens and runoff areas were all outstanding. Soft bunker sand that’s just natural to the area. Greens are bent grass but totally natural and have good pace relative to U.S. greens probably around 10. Most of the caddies are actually part of the greens keeper staff so as they walk the course with you they are constantly taking note of course conditions hole by hole. They hold each other accountable during the round if they see something they don’t like they will mess with that guy until he gets it fixed. These caddies are local so there is a real pride there for the course to be top notch. When playing this course there are 2 keys: don’t try to be a hero... take conservative lines off the tee and be in the fairway, if you’re in the rough at most hit a 9 iron or wedge and stick to that! The second key, Is coming to terms with the fact that you are going to miss some greens because the greens are undulating, designed to drain water off of them and also you’re golf ball. Don’t panic, putting from off the green works well. Your caddy can help you a lot on and around the greens. They caddies are also pretty good players themselves and they can get a good handle on your game that day and get you back on track when you need it. The course and ocean views are awesome. You play along the coast for probably 80% of the course. The heather is pretty also, just keep it in the fairway...The clubhouse has plenty of souvenirs. The bar area was cool. It’s has a small pub feel to it. Cool tradition at the bar where most visitors leave a bag tag from their home course with Royal Dornoch. There were tags from all over the world in there. The food at the restaurant was really good, especially the sticky toffee dessert. There are some new apartments that the club built about 100ft from the bar and clubhouse which opened this Summer in 2019. That’s where my group stayed and they worked out great. Each suite has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room area, and kitchen with washer dryer. Overall it’s a great course with nice amenities and you can walk it with a caddy in 4 hours. It can fly by so take it in, take pictures.
