Rancho Manana Golf Club
Played On 02/24/2018North Phoenix Gem
I was in town with a group of friends for a little spring training watching and golf. Rancho was our third round of the trip and it was a lot of fun. The layout is pretty straight forward; greens are small, fairways are tight but the distance is short so hit em straight off the tee and you'll have a lot of chances to score. Greens were tricky to read as a first time player there but they were in great shape and overall the course was very well maintained.
Talon at Grayhawk Golf Club
Played On 02/22/2018Phenomenal Desert Golf
Went out as the first time of the day on a Thursday - finished as a foursome in under four hours! Every green and every fairway were perfection. Some fun risk reward holes, some challenging par 3's - Grayhawk is my kind of track for sure. For what it's worth, practice facility was world class too.
Skylinks Golf Course
Played On 12/03/2017My Go-To Track
If you can learn to live with the pace - which is abysmal even on a weekday afternoon - this is a fun track. Back it up from the Black Tees and it's downright tough. The holes are straight forward, no tricks, bunkers that will hurt you, some patches of trees that will hurt you but overall a forgiving track that is always fun.
One of my favorite things about this track is that I routinely get paired with good folks. I typically play this place as a single or a twosome and I don't think I've ever went out with a group that wasn't fun. Go out, stock up on snacks, prepare for a slow round and have fun.
Sand Canyon Country Club
Played On 11/04/2017Angeles National Golf Club
Played On 10/18/2017Great Los Angeles Option
Angeles National is great option for LA folks. The greens were in really nice shape - fairways were pretty dry but they were fine to hit off of. Pace was super fast - played 18 from the blues as a twosome and finished in a little over 3 hours.
It's the kind of course where you can keep your driver in the bag for a lot of the par 4s. Greens have a lot of undulation so approach shots need to be accurate and putting will be a must if you want to post a low score.
Vellano Country Club
Played On 10/02/2017When It's Good - It's Great
When the conditions are good - Vellano is amazing. It's a fun mix of elevation changes, big greens and requires a nice variety of shot shapes. It's fun Greg Norman design with tee boxes that really allow for a variety of players to have fun.
When its bad though, its bad. Fairways can be green-paint-on-dirt. When the wind is howling its almost unplayable. I really want to give this course 5 stars, I'm hoping in 2018 it get's a lot of love and turns back into the gem that it has been over the years.
Pronghorn Club - Jack Nicklaus Signature Course
Played On 09/12/2017All Star Track
During a week-long trip to Oregon, a buddy and I played 7 rounds in 5 days. Pronghorn was round 1 and it was a blast. Course condition was impeccable. Pace of play was impeccable. Almost every hole was interesting.
One of my playing partners routinely found his drives off the fairway and was able to keep playing. Most of the holes were forgiving enough to allow for a pitch out vs. just losing a ball.
The only hole I didn't like was No. 11. The trap seemed oddly placed in the fairway. Overall though, an All Star track that I can't wait to get back to.
jimpic, Oregon resident here who has been to Bend for lots of golf over the years. I would recommend, Aspen Lakes, Crosswater, Pronghorn, as the top courses there. Second tier would be Sunriver meadows, Juniper, Widgi and Eagle Ridge. don't bother with Tetherow, too overpriced for what you get. If you have a connection for Bend CC, that is a must play.
cheers!
what other courses did you play through Oregon that you liked? we are doing a father-son Oregon golf trip soon.. we are from Southern CAL. thanks Jim
Hey there, I'll be in the area starting Dec. 27 and would love to get a round or two in. I'm a 5 hcp visiting from Alberta, Canada for a few weeks. Let me know!
