Fun course. Short but challenging. Good for walking.

This was a fun course with an old-school golf feel. It’s a shortish course (under 6300 from the back tees) with many narrow holes that require you to think about which club to hit (driver off the tee is not a good idea on many of the holes). Not a lot of water or bunkers on the course... the challenge is mostly in how tight the course is and how small the greens are.

We did not get a true representation of how the greens usually are today as they had recently been aerated (we had been given fair warning).

It is a very walking-friendly course. Unfortunately golfnow pricing did not offer a rate for walking; it includes the cart. We walked anyway but did feel like we overpaid at $74 because of that.

Great weekend morning on the links

The course is in great shape. We played the Meadow and Lake 9s on a Saturday morning in under 4 hours. The course was in great shape - greens rolled true, fairways were healthy, green, and well maintained. We played the gold tees which play at 6,645 yards. A very challenging course but not overly punishing. Many tee shots are fairly open which helps inspire confidence when needing a big drive on a long hole. Overall it was a great day of golf.

Unforgiving

The course was in very nice condition and the staff were all very friendly. The rate was reasonable for a Friday afternoon. But I just didn't love the course. It's a tight, tree-lined course with OB everywhere and a few silly holes (like the first - a drive to the right half of the fairway gives you no chance of going at the tiny, well-protected green). There were also a few overgrown trees that definitely block the ideal ball flight off the tee.

I did not like the greens at all; I like quick greens that roll true and I don't mind undulating greens but fast greens that are also severely undulating is a combination I do not like... seemingly good putts can end up 10 feet below the hole because the ball just won't stop on the slope.

I wanted to like the course but I won't rush back.

Fungus - no fairways

I used to play Cranbury often (late 1990s) and it was always a fun round. I hadn't played there in at least 18 years and learned that this year their fairways and tee boxes were hit by some fungus that basically resulted in almost no grass... these areas were mostly dirt/mud. Hopefully they can get it back under control for next season.

We found ourselves freely moving the ball in the fairway to find the nearest patch of grass to hit off of. The rough was also in pretty bad shape on many holes - the entire areas of rough were covered in crab grass (not on every hole but on too many of them).

The greens seemed healthy but didn't all roll true and were VERY slow and soft.

I don't plan to return this season but we only paid $30 including cart for 18 holes so I certainly have no complaints about the cost. Pace of play was surprisingly good, considering there had been an outing on the course before us (it finished up while we were on about the 4th hole).

If they can get the conditions of the fairways, tee boxes and rough under control again, it is a fine course with an interesting layout.

Thank you for your feedback. We take your opinion seriously, and are working everyday to improve the customer experience. The fairways have recently suffered but we expect them to be back in better shape in the coming weeks. We hope you'll come play us again soon and appreciate your patronage over the years. Have a great day!

Lack of maintenance

I have been curious about this course for years just because I live fairly close by. I already knew it was an executive course with mostly par 3s, so that did not impact my review rating.

I will not return to this course simply because it was in such terrible shape. The tee boxes were horrible, with very little grass and a lot of mud or clover. The fairways were soaking wet (there was a light rain the day before so I would have understood mildly damp fairways, but there was standing water all over the place so obviously the course does not drain well).

The only positive about the course was that the pace of play was lightning fast because there was almost nobody there.
