Panther Run Golf Club
Played On 02/06/2019Enjoyable
We've been playing this course for years and always enjoyed it. It has always been well run and the staff has always been courteous and helpful. But we have not been here for nearly 4 years. Pace of play was a bit slow at 4.5 hours but acceptable. The greens and tee boxes were fine to us. They used to offer large buckets of range balls but now guests get a small bag and members get unlimited balls. I don't want to stand at the range and beat balls. I came to play golf. But a small bag is a bit too limiting. Our biggest disappointment is with the condition of the fairways. One thing we used to absolutely love about this course was the hitting surfaces. Currently the fairways are very thin. On many drives, my golf ball had mud on it. More often than not, I was hitting from hard pan surface instead of nice grass like it used to be. Not sure what happened here but it's nowhere close to the way it used to be. The bottom line is we'll return.
The Bayonet at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
Played On 05/23/2014Nice layout but very challenging
My wife and I played Black Horse for the first time. It was a bit cold and breezy day which made play less enjoyable. We liked the course overall. But for us, too much undulation of the fairways and greens. We also don't care for so much sand that comes into play. I consider many of the fairways narrow so putting sand traps in the middle of narrow fairways makes play difficult. Not sure if it's the type of grass or if the course has been reworked but every fairway is a tight lie making ball striking difficult for the average recreational golfer.

My wife and I enjoyed this course. Hitting surfaces a bit rough but the greens are good. Pace of play was fine. Lots of wildlife to enjoy. Even with so-so conditions, it's a great course to play with ocean views and it won't break the bank. We did that yesterday at Pebble Beach!! Yowza!!
Black Mesa Golf Club
Played On 04/25/2014No Gimme
My wife and I are on a cross country bucket list trip and stopped for a few days in Santa Fe. We played Towa and then Black Mesa. Black Mesa is pure desert golf. Plenty of rough terrain and elevation changes. The cart paths are dirt/gravel. This course is difficult. Not many flat spots. You've got to play the slopes well to score decently. I'm a 15 handicap and managed to shoot 90. A lot of the grass on the course is still dormant so the hitting surfaces were not good. The starting hole is one of the most difficult tee shots I know. I appreciate a course that lets you start and end well. This course won't do that. We had a blast though. A challenge and a lot of fun. NOT a course for the older/elderly. We're told that in 30-45 days the course will green up and be a completely different experience. So plan your tee time to the best course conditions. We booked on Golf Now and got a nice discount. I wouldn't pay full price to play in the current conditions. There are only a couple of water hazards but plenty of carry. I managed to only lose 1 ball. An enjoyable day for us. Not a course I'd want to play often but check it out.
Boulder at Towa Golf Resort
Played On 04/24/2014Drought taking it's toll
My wife and I stayed at the Hilton Buffalo Thunder Resort/Casino. The course and the clubhouse are on the property. Easy to get to. There are 27 holes open. The pro shop told me that they abandoned 9 holes nearly 8 years ago shortly after the course opened due to lack of water. Sad. However, they turned that 9 into a very nice walking path which we enjoyed. Just keep your eyes open for snakes sunning themselves on the cart path. We very much enjoyed the course design/layout. Cart's w/GPS are nice. Lots of elevated tee boxes, great views and elevation changes. It's 7,000 feet above sea level here so the ball carries nicely. You'll be disappointed once you get back home to the real world. Unfortunately, many of the greens, tee boxes and fairways are in poor condition due to the drought. I would not pay full price for these conditions. Find a discount on Golf Now. The pro shop told us $69 but we booked on Golf Now for half of that. At a steep discount, I would play the course again. But if you're looking for that pristine desert golf, this isn't it.
TPC Treviso Bay
Played On 12/17/2013Excellent condition
I've read many of the reviews about the difficulty of this course. My wife and I found it very fair for recreational golfers IF you pick the right tees for your game. I only hit it about 200 yards off the tee and when using the Bridge tees, had no problem with a couple of holes that have some carry off the tee. I'm an 18 handicap and shot 89. I suggest you get real and move up a set of tees and enjoy the beautiful layout and great conditions. I lost a couple of balls but only because I hit a couple of really bad shots. At $100 per round however, this is a one and done for us. We simply won't pay this kind of money for golf. The fairways, greens, bunkers and tee boxes are in excellent condition. We didn't go there for the clubhouse or the food. We went for the golf. So, while it's kind of ugly, the incomplete clubhouse that has been sitting there for 5 years doesn't bother us. It's just a reminder of how deep the Great Recession hurt SW Florida and it's still recovering. At the end of the day, while we had a great day, we'd return to Panther Run, which is an excellent golf course, and save the $100+ to play another day.
Valencia Golf & Country Club
Played On 10/18/2013Excellent condition
My wife and I hadn't played here for a couple of years. We've played it a couple of times the past week. We really like it. The course is in great condition right now as they prepare for season. The course plays very fair for the recreational golfer. The greens will challenge your putting ability and are getting fast. Tee boxes and fairways are in good shape. It's nice to have what I'd considered an easy opening hole to get your round started and a fairly easy hole to finish on. We like that. Staff has always been very nice. You should try this course.
Arrowhead Golf Course
Played On 10/12/2013Great Value in the off season
My wife and I play here often. You can get a great value in the off season. Not sure I would pay a lot to play here in season. Starters always seem nice. Attention at the bag drop a bit hit/miss. The layout is fair to recreational golfers. Fairways a bit thin. Tee boxes need some work. Pace of play on the front for this round was pretty good. Starting on #10 several groups got backed up behind some boneheads that had no clue how to play ready golf and how to NOT take 3-4 practice swings, how NOT to give others a golf lesson on the course, how NOT to ball hunt and how NOT to take forever on the greens lining up putts to win the US Open. Slow play is is one of the biggest reasons people drop out of golf. Put a ranger on the course and be willing to nicely kick someone in the pants if they're slow and causing a back up and not letting people play through. More than anything else, golfers will appreciate that you spend the time/money to keep play moving.
Fair condition; value priced
My wife and I have played this course many times, even though it's a 35-40 minute drive each way. The staff is always great. Course conditions are normally fair. Most holes are reasonable for recreational golfers and the course plays very fair for the ladies. Worth the drive as long as I'm paying in the $15-$20 range per player. Above that, I won't go.
Stoneybrook Golf Club
Played On 9/21/2013Nice course in the off season. WAY too expensive in season.
The course is decently maintained. Love the GPS on the carts. Hitting surfaces a bit thin and need work. Greens are nice. Bunkers fair for recreational golfers. Bag drop & Pro Shop staff very helpful & friendly. Starters often grumpy. Lighten up commander. People came there to have fun and enjoy a nice round of golf in paradise. Send them to the #1 tee with a "thanks for choosing to play here....enjoy your round in four hours or less".
Panther Run Golf Club
Played On 11/16/2012Excellent condition; fair set up; good pace of play
My wife and have been making the 45 minute drive to this course from Estero whenever we're in SW Florida. We've always enjoyed it; the staff is nice; the course always in very good condition; pace of play has always been good. And it's a good value. A bit hard for people not wanting to drive very far but you should at least try it.
