Stillwater Oaks Golf Course
Played On 06/09/2017Worth playing here 2-3X per Summer
Although Stillwater Oaks runs parallel to Loggers Trail at a few points it is a completely different course. Whereas Loggers is generally open, Stillwater Oaks utilizes more of the old growth trees. Course was in pretty decent condition, but seems to hold onto more standing water after a rain than many other local courses. I would say the layout is fairly easy to moderate, but a few holes can be challenging. A few doglegs are particularly interesting because of trees that block access to the green unless your approach shot is well placed. Greens and fairways were in good shape.
Bristol Ridge Golf Course
Played On 06/02/2017My Favorite Course in the Area
I've played a number of the courses in the Stillwater / Western WI area and this is my favorite. The combination of a well kept course, challenging layout, and great value bring me back here multiple times per season. Even the range / putting green area are well maintained. In addition, the best little brewery in the area (Oliphant) is only a few miles from the course in Somerset.
Kilkarney Hills Golf Course
Played On 05/12/2017Very average course
I booked this course as a last minute option on a beautiful Friday. It is easy to find in River Falls, and just about a mile off 35. Course layout was interesting, with a couple of severe doglegs. Glad the guy I was playing with had played there before because there are also a few blind shots. Generally the tee boxes and fairways were a little shaggy, and the rough was pretty overgrown. A couple of the greens were tiered, and generally the greens were in good shape. Given all of the better course choices in Western WI I can't imagine I'll be going back here anytime soon.
Pheasant Hills Golf Course
Played On 10/19/2015A 'Once in a While' Choice
This is a wide open course where you can easily recover from a poor tee shot. Overall it's a pretty nice course and we got to play in 70+ degree weather in mid October. Greens were a little shaggy yesterday, but it's tough to complain when you're paying <$15. It is a bit of a drive from the Twin Cities, and there are other decent WI courses that are closer, but I'll definitely keep this one on my list
River Falls Golf Club
Played On 08/07/2015Nice Course
The course is pretty accessible since it is less than a mile off of 35. I booked it as at the last minute and got an incredible rate through GolfNow. Some challenging holes, including a few with some blind hazards. Would definitely play here again
Loggers Trail Golf Club
Played On 05/31/2015Great course for the money
I've played this course several times over the last 3 years and it never disappoints. There are plenty of challenging holes and the course is always in good shape. Once they finalize the clubhouse I assume that prices will go up, but for now it is one of the best value courses in the East metro
Afton Alps Golf Course
Played On 8/7/2013Would Play Here Again
I played the front 9 as a single on a weekday afternoon and finished in about 1.5 hours, which included playing 2 tee shots all the way to the hole. The course is very nicely maintained and is in a beautiful location near Afton Alps ski area. Only the front 9 was open so my comments are based on that. This couse is geared to the mid-high handicapper. After an interesting opening hole near the ski lift most holes are pretty wide open. There is enough challenge (doglegs, water) to keep it interesting. Only complaint is that many of the greens were pretty small. I'd recommend this as a good course to work on your game.
Thank you for the kind words.
