Farmstead Golf Links
Played On 12/28/2020Excellent Track
I played here on a nice winter day and had as much fun playing golf as I've had in a long, long time. The course was so much fun. It was challenging but VERY fair. As long as you didn't spray the ball too far off line you weren't going to lose a ball. There was some water, but it was avoidable and the design allowed to play away from the water without additional penalty. We played the blue tees and even with the wet, overseeded fairways the course wasn't overly long. Even the 18th hole which was a 700+ yard par 6, was very fair. It wasn't tricked up, it was just a long hole that, for most golfers, would require 4 shots to get to the green in regulation.
My only gripe would be the hole locations. Of the 18 holes, I'd say about 14 were on the top of a little knob or ridge, which made holing putts of any length quite difficult. The frustrating part is the green complexes were very fair and allowed for much better hole locations than were being used.
Nevertheless, the course itself is really good. Very, very fun design. Some great holes. Excellent condition from tee-to-green. I'll definitely be coming back next time I'm in the area.
UNC Finley Golf Course
Played On 05/21/2017Solid Course
The Finley Course is a solid golf course. The layout is really good and challenges all level of players. The collection of par 3s are especially good. #6 & #14 are the two best, but the others are very good as well.
I will say that choosing the correct tees is important here. We played from the Blue tees and it was a little too short. There are some holes that are pretty awkward from that length if you are a longer player.
My only real critique is that the fairway bunkers have A LOT of sand in them, which makes them very difficult to hit out of, especially because many of them are quite deep.
Whiskey Creek Golf Club
Played On 04/09/2017Too Many Uphill Holes
Golf course was in decent shape. The greens had been punched about a week or so before and they were terribly bumpy and very unreliable. The rest of the course was alright though wet in some spots.
What really turned me off was the layout. There were two really good holes. The par 3 11th is a great par 3 and the par5 18th (with the exception of the building ruins in the middle of the fairway) is a really solid risk/reward par 5, especially as a finishing hole. However, I counted 13(!!) holes that either take an uphill shot into the green or you can't see the surface of the green. Not to mention a couple of the holes are almost identical in the way they play (3 & 17). For an $80 golf course, I expect a lot more out of the course design and layout.
Also, the staff was less than friendly. The cart person brought our bags to the cart and then set them on the ground behind the cart without strapping them in. It says a lot when the Starter is the nicest staff member you encounter all day.
The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort
Played On 01/15/2017Hardest Course I've Ever Played
This is hands down the hardest course I've ever played. That said, it's a tremendous golf course. The greens are fantastic. Not too fast and not a ton of break, so you can make some putts. The hardest part is off the tee. Pete Dye is so deceptive with sight lines, that you really have to trust the line and be aggressive. Everything about this place is first class. The views are amazing. The caddies are tremendous. I can't wait to go back.
Patriots Point Golf Links
Played On 01/14/2017Last 3 Holes are Tremendous
We played here in mid-January and the weather was fantastic. Caught a great day with only a slight breeze. The first 15 holes are pretty good, but nothing to get too excited about. The last 3 holes along the harbor are really what you pay for. A really good par 4, a great short par 3, and a really solid tough par 5. I had read that the course conditions can be very hit-or-miss, but the day we played the course was in great shape. Course is close to downtown (10 min drive) and has great views of the harbor and Ft. Sumter when you get to the last 3. Highly recommend if you're looking for a course near downtown.
Bryan Park Champions Course
Played On 12/24/2016Fast Greens
Bryan Park is a solid golf course all the way around. The Champion Bermuda greens are very fast. Have to be cautious on the greens because they're very fast. It's also a pretty difficult driving course. That said, the rough wasn't too long. Overall, it's quite challenging mostly because the greens are so firm and fast.
Maple Chase Golf & Country Club
Played On 12/23/2016Solid Track
Maple Chase has 16 good holes. The other 2 you just try and make a par and get the heck away from them.
11-12 are the two holes that really aren't very good. 12 especially is pretty sketchy.
The other 16 holes are pretty solid. Lots of scoring holes. Course is in solid shape, though there were a couple greens that hadn't fully recovered from the brutal summer heat.
Tot Hill Farm Golf Club
Played On 12/10/2016Have Fun
I had read a lot of conflicting things about Tot Hill before I went and played. I had made up my mind before playing that I was just going to try and have as much fun as possible and embrace the quirks.
This not your typical golf course. There are blind shots, deceiving yardages, and abnormal holes. However, if you play the golf course with an open mind and try to embrace the quirkiness and have as much fun as you can, the course is a blast. If you try and "shoot a number" and take it really seriously, you're probably going to hate the course.
Just embrace the course being different because it's a really fun golf course.
Birdwood Golf Course
Played On 08/26/2016Not worth the time
I was really excited to play Birdwood. I've played quite a few other college golf courses throughout the country and always enjoy myself. Birdwood was the exception.
The staff was less than friendly. The price is WAY too high for the golf course you get. It's a decent course, but no where near worth what they're charging. The course was in pretty good shape, although the greens were really beat up. The layout is a bit wonky in spots too. The back 9 has a few holes that are just downright bad. #11, #13, #15, & #17 are all bad designs, with #11 & #17 being the worst of the bunch.
If I was going to play golf in the area again, I'd find somewhere else to play.
Old Trail Golf Club
Played On 08/26/2016A Must Play
Old Trail is a phenomenal golf course. The course is always in great shape and it's tough to find another course with better course conditions.
The layout is fantastic too. A great mix of challenging holes and easier holes. Lots of variety. If you're playing well you can post a really good score. If you're not playing well, you could have a tough day.
If I lived in the area, I would strongly consider joining this course. I think it's that good!
Harbor at Wild Dunes Golf Links
Played On 03/26/2016Smallest Greens Ever
The Harbor Course at Wild Dunes has some of the smallest greens I've ever seen. It's very narrow too. If you have a tendency to spray the ball, bring a lot of balls. Staff was less than friendly too (the nicest people we talked to all day were the Starter & Ranger). For what you pay, I would much rather play somewhere else.
Asheboro Municipal Golf Course
Played On 10/16/2014Great Old Course
Asheboro Municpal is probably the best value I've found since moving to NC. I may be biased because I'm a huge Donald Ross fan, but I think it's a great track. You can't beat $10 to walk all you can play!!
The course isn't long but the greens are very small which make it challenging. The course also requires the player to work the ball both ways off the tee. Don't need driver much, but you'd better be accurate.
Oak Valley Golf Club
Played On 09/30/2014Top 5 Public in the Triad
Oak Valley is a great track. The practice facility is one of the best that I've experienced so far in the Triad area. Lots of targets to aim at, as well as a large short game area.
Course was really nice. Great layout. Good mix of easy holes to make birdie and challenging holes where par is a good score. Even though the tips said 7000 yards, it didn't feel like it played that long. Lots of elevation changes, with very few uphill shots.
Salem Glen Country Club
Played On 09/25/2014Better Courses in the area
The best thing Salem Glen has going for it is the practice facility. Very large range with an excellent short game area and practice green. Could still use some more targets on the range, but overall one of the better practice facilities in the area.
Course is ok. Not a big fan of the layout. First hole is a pretty bad starting hole and #10 is no better. There are much better courses in the area, both in course condition and layout.
The Highland Course At Primland Resort
Played On 08/21/2014Amazing Course
Primland is a phenomenal place. Everything from the service at the valet, to the service from the golf staff is top notch. They make everyone feel like a VIP guest.
The course is unreal. Be sure to hit the fairway though because there isn't much room between lush fairway and knee high grass.
Only downside, and it's not really a downside, is that you are so caught up in your surroundings that you don't realize how slow you're playing until you finish. We had 3 players, all of whom are under 10 handicap, and it took us almost 5 hours.
No question, this is one of the best courses I've ever played.
Pudding Ridge Golf Club
Played On 08/08/2014Great Value
I played last week and was very impressed. In my opinion, the first three holes aren't real great, but 4-18 are great holes with a great mix of birdie holes and challenging holes.
Pace of play was a little slow, which I've been told can be a problem there.
No driving range to warm up on was a bummer. They do have a decent short game area, however, the green in the short game area isn't mowed any shorter than the fairway, which is always a pet peeve of mine.
Staff was great. The guy in the shop even gave me a yardage book when I checked in and told him it was my first time playing there. Although the yardage book wasn't entirely accurate, some holes had been changed and the depictions were a little off scale, it was nice to have as a reference guide.
Tanglewood Golf Club - Championship Course
Played On 08/04/2014Good value
Played the back tees and it's definitely a challenging track. Good mix of birdie holes and challenging holes. Biggest reason I didn't give it 5-stars is because the bunkers were a disaster. There are lots of them and for the most part they were just hard red clay/dirt and not much sand at all.
Not a great practice area. Range was really beat up and there really isn't anywhere to practice your short game, as the putting green doesn't allow chipping. Overall, it was definitely a good value and I'd play there again. Course definitely has a lot of potential should they find the budget to make some changes.
Fact is, it's not a good golf course? Wow, I can wrap my head around liking other courses better, but not a good layout? I just don't get that. I also do get comparing #2 to #17. I'm not sure what tees you are playing. I see that you are a good player, as am I. I play the tips. and #2 is typically a driver and a wedge to a green layed out lengthwise. #17 is a much tighter and tougher tee shot and is a driver 7-9 iron depending on where the pin is on the extremely deep two tiered green. The bunkering, greenside and fairway is completely different on both holes.
I meant #2 & #17. I'm sorry you were so offended by my being a hole off.
Fact is, it's not a very good golf course. End of story.
You are free to not like a course but have some legitimate reasons for not liking it.
For one, #3 and #17 are entirely different holes. One is a par three while the other is a par four. The greens on those holes are entirely different. I don't know how anyone in their right minds could think those two holes play the same.
Bottom line is your assessment on the course it self is inaccurate at best.
