Harbor Links at Sagamore Resort
Played On 07/16/2017Pebble Beach on a Lake
Let me start of by saying Harbor Links at Sagamore Resort is a special design. P.B. Dye outdid himself when he laid out this track.
The greens are fairly big and have lots of hills and tiers. Starting with the 2nd hole, there are many dramatic views. The 2nd hole is an elevated tee shot that give you the option to hit as little as a 175 yard shot, all the way up to trying to drive the green. The tee shot goes over a huge crater.
The course is filled with what I termed micro-bunkers. Very small well placed bunkers that had nice sand as of yesterday. Making the bunkers more penal is the fact that the course lets the native grasses grow knee high around the edges of many of the bunkers. On the 18th hole I had to his out sideways from a fairway bunker because my ball was simply too close to the native grass.
The 4th and 5th holes are unusual back-to-back par 5's. The 4th has a fairway break and a huge drop off. Directly in front of the elevated green is a circular grass bunker with knee high fescue. The 5th is a dogleg right par 5 that provides the first clear view of Brookville Lake behind the green.
The 6th is a par 3 that is the equivalent of a Pebble Beach hole but on a lake instead of the Pacific Ocean. If you miss it right, you are in Brookville Lake.
The 7th is an island fairway with water on both sides and water surrounding the green except for in front.
Many of the greens are surrounded by shaved chipping areas which give the golfer the option to putt, chip, flop or hit any type of shot you prefer.
The 11th is reminiscent of the 9th at Shaker Run (or the inverse of the 18th at TPC Sawgrass at you prefer.) The hole is short giving you a choice off the tee. However, if you miss right you are in Brookville Lake. If you miss left you are in fairway bunkers. The green has water in front and on the right so hitting a fairway bunker shot to a half island green will be challenging for most golfers without my skill set.
14th is another gem of a hole that requires a precise tee shot in the range of 175-225 yards. If you are fortunate enough to find the fairway, the green has the nastiest false front I've ever seen. There is a creek to the left of the green, and the entire width of the green is about as wide as a big dining room table. A great short par 4 requiring two precise shots to find the green.
16th is a part three downhill with the lake in the background and a half hidden pin if on the left side of the green as it was yesterday.
17th is another short par 4 that is well protected by water all the way up the left side and a series of micro bunkers green side right and short that make placement, not power, the important element on the tee shot.
Overall, lots of choices off the tee, not penal for guys who don't hit the ball far and plenty of challenge on and around the greens.
Hueston Woods Golf Course
Played On 07/08/2017Awesome Greens, as usual
Hueston Woods is a classic tree lined golf course outside the college town of Oxford, Ohio. In the summer, the course is rarely crowded because most of the students are gone. For a state parks course, I have no idea how the greens staff consistently keep the greens running smooth and fast. The greens have lots of tiers and on a given day certain pin placements can be devilish. I don't know anyone who has ever played Hueston Woods who didn't like the course.
The off course amenities are slim, especially the food and beverage, but there is a driving range.
The Senator Course at Shula's Golf Club
Played On 03/16/2016You Won't Be Disappointed
The Senator Course at Shula's Golf Club is an above average course. Greens were in good condition when I played. Course has lots of water hazards, but nothing overly penal. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Front nine presents more scoring opportunities than the back nine in my opinion. Worth the trip from Miami.
Davie Golf & Country Club
Played On 03/15/2016Can you say water and undulation?
I enjoyed my round at the Davie Golf & Country Club. The course was in slightly better than average condition. The greens were possibly the most undulating I have ever experienced. I found them to be a bit on the slow side, but they may keep them that way because of the slopes. Besides the greens, every hole has multiple opportunities to hit the ball in the water. I would describe Davie as a fun place to play. It's not long, but you better be accurate or you will be in trouble. Staff were very nice.
Maketewah Country Club
Played On 05/11/2015Classic Golf Course
Fantastic old golf course that is kept in immaculate condition. The greens are as undulating as any you will ever play. Huge ravine runs through the course making nearly every hole uphill or downhill. If you have the opportunity to play at Maketewah don't pass up the chance.
Blue Ash Golf Course
Played On 08/17/2014Best Public Course in the Area
Blue Ash is in fantastic condition and there is not a more difficult layout in the Cincinnati area. Tight fairways, huge greens with lots of levels and slopes and they are fast. A must play if in the area.
Cherry Blossom Golf Course & Country Club
Played On 08/09/2014Slightly Above Average
Played Cherry Blossom for the first time today and I had previously seen the high reviews/ratings. There was nothing wrong with the course. It was in good shape but the front 9 in particular is unremarkable. I couldn't tell you about a single hole. Back 9 is a better layout with variety of holes. Overall a decent course, but nothing to rave about or travel far to play. Would rate 3 1/2 stars if possible.
Bel-Wood Country Club
Played On 08/05/2014Great Course. Always fun to play.
Do not let the overall yardage fool you. Course will force you to hit every club in your bag. Great variety of holes. Greens always fast and in great condition. A must play if given the opportunity.
Lakeside/Meadows at Shaker Run Golf Club
Played On 08/04/2014Best condition in recent years
Original 18 holes at Shaker Run is a fantastic layout. The course is finally back to good playing condition after an abysmal last few seasons. Holes #9 and #18 are as memorable as any in the area.
Lakeside/Meadows at Shaker Run Golf Club
Played On 9/2/2012Great Course Design, Greens in terrible condition
Shaker Run is a fantastic layout. However, the greens are so bad on the original 18 holes they should be played as an automatic two-putt. The worst greens I have ever seen, which is a shame for such a great course.
tylerwebb78,
Thank you for your review of Shula's Golf Club. We are glad that you enjoyed your experince with us. Most golfers agree with you in that the front 9 presents more scoring chances than the back 9. The course and greens are still in good condition. We hope to see you again real soon.
Sincerely,
Shula's Golf Club
