The Cape Breton Highlands Golf Course
Played On 09/14/2021Beautiful, Challenging Course
A beautiful, front nine out, back nine in, diversified in style course. A lot has been put into its design. It is a challenging course that is very fair but hard to score well on. Most greens were nicely undulating and well protected with bunkers. This a course where you would learn over time where to leave the ball because some pin placements can be very difficult. Overall a lot of fun.
However, for a course of this stature, I was surprised to find no driving range. There is a small putting green and a separate nice chipping green. The clubhouse was quite basic for a course like this. The course is worthy of an investment in a nice big clubhouse and restaurant.
Timberwolf Golf Club
Played On 07/19/2021Very nice, upper tier course
Overall a very nice course. The layout is very good, creative. Every holes has features, nice undulating fairways with fairway bunkers in good spots. Water in many places but in fair places. Greens were generally large with lots of slopes. I could play this courses over and over. Staff were very friendly, Claudio is a very nice, competent starter keeping everything on track.
Dunedin Golf Club
Played On 11/07/2019Great Course, But Has Temporary Issues
I've played this course a few times, mainly because I like the challenging layout and usually good conditions.
However, for the next month I would call the course before booking a round. Currently, there is a 90 degree cart rule in place, which I would say is not uncommon, but it slows play.
The more bothersome, avoidable issue is that on most of the holes (14-15 of them), the tees are all moved up to the front tee decks. If you like to play off the blues or whites, you're not going to like this. I felt I didn't get what I came/paid for.
I assume this is temporary, but I would recommend they rotate their tee decks over time so only 2-3 are moved at a time. If the plan is to move all the front tees to the back tee decks for a while next, there are going to some unhappy campers again, like my wife. This should be done so its not really noticeable to golfers.
Lansbrook Golf Club
Played On 11/01/2019Nice Course, With Tight Challenges
I have played this course a couple times and I find it to be a nice course that is fun to play. The course is in fairly good condition, greens are rolling good.
This said, there are 2-3 holes that are very narrow and tight, where you are probably going with irons all the way unless you are very, very straight with a driver.
Some holes are nicely designed such that if you are not straight off the tee, you will be okay but blocked by trees on your next shot to the green. You have to look at the whole hole carefully first, and plan.
Greensmere Golf & Country Club - Legacy Course
Played On 08/31/2018Good Challenging Layout
Course is a good, challenging layout with some big elevation changes on some of the holes.
The greens were generally very large to huge with good slopes. They were in very good condition too, rolling true.
The fairways were in good condition, and somewhat firm. On many holes you have fairway, rough, and then thick bush. They could consider more bush clearing so your punishment suits the deed, or red staking many of the areas..
Camelot Golf & Country Club
Played On 08/27/2018Top Tier Private Course
Camelot is a top tier course, the type of course that could host professional events and high end tournaments.
The layout is very good, well planned, on terrain that is especially undulating on the back nine with some big elevation changes. Bunkers are well placed with nice white pure sand. The greens are all challenging with undulations and they are fast.
The condition of the greens, fairways, bunkers, and rough cannot be better to be honest.
Clubhouse is huge and gorgeous.
A treat to play on.
Rebel Creek Golf Club
Played On 08/07/2018Upper Tier Course
This is an upper tier public course.
Overall, the layout is very nice. The fairways are nice, and I would say it is generally a driver friendly course with rough not too deep and while there are trees to get tangled up with, there is not a lot of bush. There are some big elevation changes to make it fun. There are water hazards and lots of bunkers.
The greens are challenging with most of them having multiple slopes and their speed was rather fast. I felt that to score well on this course, you'd have to be good at reading putts and putting. I had more three putts than usual.
Overall, a well designed course. Easy to recommend.
Greensmere Golf & Country Club - Premiere Course
Played On 07/13/2018Links Style Layout
The first nine on this course is a fairly open, generally flat, links style layout.
The second nine is different, more challenging, with some good elevation changes on some of the holes.
Canadian Golf and Country Club - East
Played On 06/17/2018Nice Course, Good Layout
A good course with a nice layout. Some good doglegs on the course. There are fair, well placed water hazards. Well designed greens.
The fairways, bunkers, and greens are good, and the rough is not too deep.
Only quibble is #12, a short par 4 with a 90 degree left dogleg. There must be a way to improve its layout.
The course can be busy, causing slower play. There are a good number of tournaments on this course every year, you might ask before booking.
Dunedin Golf Club
Played On 11/28/2017Demanding, Fun Layout
This course has many nice tree-lined fairways, at least half are doglegs. If you go a little wayward you find yourself in trees but easy to chip out or recover. The course is fair in that it has trees from which you can recover rather than bushed areas or swamp areas like some other courses. There is not much water in play on the course, none on the front nine, maybe 3-4 holes on the back. None the less I seem to find trees on this course more than I like to.
The greens are often protected with good quality bunkers, the greens are in very good condition. Putts roll true.
Overall, it is a challenging and fun course to play.
Rocky Point Golf Course
Played On 11/26/2017A Varied Layout, Fun to Play
The layout of the course varied from fairly forgiving fairways with narrow ditches on many holes, to some challenging fairways with water in play. In particular, all holes from 14 onward were holes with water in play, making course management on those holes very important.
The greens were nicely shaped like flat domes with gentle slopes. Their grass was in very good condition, putts were rolling true.
Fairways were in average condition, the greens were in much better condition.
Overall a fun course to play.
Bardmoor Golf & Tennis Club
Played On 11/13/2017Nice Layout, Good Condition, Very Nice Greens
This course is a nice layout, in good condition. Water and small tree groups come into play on several holes, and in many cases you do not see the water from the tee or fairway. It is a fair layout though, just pay attention to distances and hazards on a map if its your first time.
At this time, we found the greens to be the best greens in the area. They are in very good condition, zsome with challenging slopes, nice grass quality, probably medium to fast rolling speed. Putts roll true.
Clearwater Country Club
Played On 11/09/2017Nice Layout, Good Condition
The Clearwater Country Club is a nice layout, fun to play.
The fairways are in good shape, many of them are lightly tree-lined but forgiving for a driver. Bunkers are good, seemingly with beach sand. The greens have slopes, and are in pretty good condition compared to the other three courses we have played in the area. The greens have good grass but they also have weeds or another type of grass in spots that will throw a putt off line.
Watch out for men's league. Men's league allows groups of 5-6 players. The prior time we played this course, we played behind a six-some and it was not fun following, well over 5 hour round, with lots of waiting for 6 serious putt outs on each green. I see others have mentioned this in their reviews, so it is not a one-time thing that I thought it was.
Tides Golf Club
Played On 11/07/2017A Shorter, Fun Course
The Tides Golf course is a fun course to play. For the most part, the course is forgiving with the exception of 2-3 tight holes.
The condition of the fairways and bunkers was good. The greens had very good grass on most of them, but there is serious maintenance and sod laying on a few of them. They kept the actual holes away from the newly sodded areas though.
I noticed right away that the yardages on the card were not matching the yardages on my Garmin GPS. The white tees are listed as 6013 yards, but the course played at 5521 yards. An average difference of 27 yards on each hole. (Actuals were 454, 244, 315, 358, 420,165, 300, 160, 385, 467, 238, 91, 340, 121, 364, 404, 278, 417) The same was basically true for the yellow tees which my wife played from. Not a big deal, but the course is shorter than the card says.
Last thing to add, if you are playing the course for the very first time, I suggest you drive ahead and look at the whole hole layout of #7. It will probably save you 1-2 shots!
East Bay Golf Club
Played On 11/05/2017Fun to Play
East Bay is overall a fun course to play. Nice par 71 layout, a driver friendly course with a good amount of space on most holes, although there is also a fair amount of water hazards on the course too if you go wayward.
At the moment, the greens are not in great condition in that they are slow, and with more than one type of grass. Some putts were bouncing around.
Very good , light, consistent sand on the bunkers.
Course is now in the best shape I've seen it, greens included. Congrats to the staff.
Brookfield Country Club - Blue
Played On 08/18/2017Fun to Play
Fun to play, course is not that difficult with generous fairways and an easy layout.
A little shorter with less than standard par.
Grey Silo Golf Course
Played On 08/16/2017Very Nice Course
This is an upper tier course with very nice fairways and greens. It is a step up from most places for sure.
My only quibble that cannot be fixed, is that its layout is such that the 1st tee and 18th hole are a fair distance from the clubhouse, and the distance between 1 and 2, and 17 and 18 is large too. These aspects make it feel like a 22 hole course for a walker, which I was. If you are carting, this would not bother you.
Loch March Golf and Country Club
Played On 06/04/2017Upper tier public course, fun to play
Loch March is a really good layout, with many features, and with five sets of tees to make it enjoyable for everyone. This is an upper tier course, on par with upper tier private courses. A nice driving range and practice facility. The course conditions are excellent, nice soft fairways, and very well maintained greens. The pace seems to be always good, hardly a need for marshals. All the of the staff are very friendly, they do pay attention to customer service. A good restaurant on site too.
Thank you for your comments. I am the General Manager at the Club and I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your round here. We look forward to seeing you again in the future. Thank you for your feedback.
