Glacier Wood Golf Club
Played On 04/21/2024Cool Windy day, course is in great shape
It was a little cooler and windier than the weather people said it would be, but all in all not too bad for Wisconsin in late April.
Course is doing very well for this early in the season. Greens were cut a little tighter than they were last weekend. I believe within a few weeks they will be at full speed.
Didn't play well, but that's not the courses fault as it is in great shape and Andrew in the pro shop is always pleasant to the patrons.
The Ridges Golf Course
Played On 05/21/2023Great day and a wonderful spring round.
I was bummed that the bar and grill weren't open, but there's still too much free money being away. I think they were open when I started at 2PM, but were closed by 530 when I got done. The Ridges is always a good test of your golf game. Relatively wide open front 9, pretty tight back 9.
The Ridges Golf Course
Played On 04/21/2022First round of the year
Hacked it all over the place today being my first time out and my advanced age, LOL. Course was in very good shape especially considering the rain we had the past couple of days. Greens were in great shape for early in the season.
Glacier Wood Golf Club
Played On 05/31/2020Beautiful day, beautiful course, ugly round of golf played
As usual Glacier Woods was in excellent shape. Greens were perfect and as usual very difficult. As has sadly become the norm over the past year and a half my game remains non-existent. Still had a great time playing a round with a good friend and getting paired up with two very nice guys and we had a a great time. A nice mix of shot placement holes as well as grip it and rip it holes, something for everyone. If you get a chance to play this place by all means do so.
Lee's Hill Golf Club
Played On 01/28/2017Not bad for late January in Virginia
First off playing in 2.5 hours will always help with how I review a course. But with that said, the greens were worked on recently and were heavily sanded, they did a great job of spreading the sand evenly, so it was like a step back in time to the old school sand greens. They rolled fast and pretty true despite being sanded. From what I could tell the greens will be terrific once the sand is gone. Other than that, same ole Lee's Hill, I used to be a member when they first opened. A shot maker course for sure, length is not all that important, but keeping in the fairway is of the utmost importance if you want to score here. The rough can be from a little to quite thin causing your ball to continue bounding on into the bordering hazard which are present on the majority of the holes. If you have never played here give it a chance, I think their regular rates are a little steep, but probably in line with the other area courses.
Cannon Ridge Golf Club
Played On 10/01/2016Rainy Day, empty course, and a 2 hour and 45 minute round
Golfnow Hot Deal for $25 on a Saturday at noon, could not resist checking out to see where there are with having just reopened. Played as a 2 some in 2 hours and 45 minutes, that pace will always leaving me smiling, even if I threw a good number of strokes away. Some due to operator error and some due to a very saturated course, a few plugged balls by each of us, but we managed to find them all. Fairways were terrific, like carpet for the most part, greens were mostly good, a little spotty on a few of them. All in all, this is still a good test of golf, pro shop and grill people we very accommodating also. I will be back soon and probably often
The Links Course at Shenandoah Valley
Played On 08/21/2016Nothing special, but a good course for a good price
$35 for 18 holes and a cart is tough to argue with. Played here Sunday afternoon as twosome, had to wait a bit on the back nine, but still finished in just over 3 hours, tough to beat that pace. The course is in decent shape, nothing special, greens were full and true, maybe a little on the slow side, but it had rained earlier in the day. The greens will always be my main focus for a course as there is no rolling them on the green to get a fair lie. Fairways were the typical Bowling green fairways, decent shape, but a little spotty, this is to be expected with the hot weather we have had this year. The course is not too long, but the fairways are also not terribly wide and most have some slope to them, and the rough is thick and tough to play out of so club down where possible to keep it in the fairway as best you can. All in all for $35 I will continue to play it a few times a year, there are too many courses in the area for me to play most courses more than 3 times a year.
Thank you for your review! We're glad you enjoyed the pace of play and value! We can't wait to see you back!
Red/White at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club
Played On 08/19/2016Hidden gem, great Hot deal, course worth well more than I paid
Scored a $14 including fees "Hot Deal" on a Friday afternoon, the course is easily worth $40 with a cart, mostly considering the distance it is from my home, if closer I would be willing to pay more. I ended up playing as a single as I had car issues on my drive out and the two-some I was supposed to play with had already went our B4 I arrived. Monte at the pro shop was very understanding when I told him I was going to be a little late due to my car issues and got me right out when I arrived. The course is one of the best conditioned courses I have played recently as the heat wave we have been experiencing has made it tough on a lot of the VA/DC metro area courses. Fairways were full and plush, rough was moderately tough, but not unplayable. Greens were terrific other than being a little slower than I prefer, never had one putt bounce off line. I played the Blue and the Red nines, I am good with any combo of their three nines, but I truly like the Blue to be one of the two I play. It offers a little more length and truly makes for a more challenging round, IMHO. I say if you have the opportunity get out to SVCC and give it a shot.
Links at Challedon
Played On 07/16/2016Great staff, very nice layout, a little TLC would go a long way
The staff at the course was excellent, from the guy in the pro shop, to the starter, to the course marshal. The pro shop gave me a yardage book for free since I had never played there before, nice touch, and quite useful as there were a few blind shots. Starter was very pleasant and got us out right on time and offered a few tips. The greens had been punched somewhat recently and had not completely heeled, but still rolled reasonably well. Some of the tee boxes were really hurting, but hey at least I get to put on a tee there, a couple of the ladies' tee boxes seemed to be an after thought, not all, but a few of them. For the most part the fairways were good, nothing special, but very adequate. I will definitely play here again, I would like to see what the greens are like after fully healing and hopefully the tee boxes come back some. It plays thru a very nice housing community, some beautiful places were visible from the course, but the houses are never in play. Played for $47 on golfnow, that is probably all I would be willing to pay until I see improvements on the greens and tee boxes. If you have never played it, give it a shot.
Glade Valley Golf Club
Played On 06/26/2016GREAT DEAL
I played Glade Valley previously, it was a nice course with good conditions. It play a little slow, but hey, it was a weekend round last time and this past Sunday. Tee boxes are goof, fairways and greens are very good to excellent. Completed play in just over 4 1/2 hours, not terrible for a Sunday morning. Will definitely return to play again, left far too many shots out there both times I played it.
Looking forward to seeing you again soon! Thanks for your feedback!
Algonkian Golf Course
Played On 05/28/2016Same Old Algonkian, not a bad thing
Weather was a bit on the warm side, but all in all not a bad day. Typical Algonkian course conditions, tee boxes, fairways, and fairways were both plush and very good. Keep it in the fairway because the rough is very full and thick. Greens were plush also, and held shots well, but as is always the case here is they are a bit on the slow side, very true, just not fast. Not sure I would pay the $65ish they want as their posted rate, but if you can get it for $55 or less give it a chance.
Old Hickory Golf Club
Played On 03/25/2016In great shape for this time of year except......
The course was in great shape for this time of year except for the aeration of the greens, and sadly Golfnow did not mention this. Fortunately I understand it is a necessary evil at this time of year so I mostly just let it go. Been fighting health issues for the past 3 months so it was truly awesome to get out on the course, the three guys that I ended up playing with were great company. $38 is a great price for this track even with aerated greens. It offers you ample opportunity to succeed but you will pay for errant shots. I forgot my prescriptions in the cart in a plastic Safeway bag and never dreamed I would get them back this morning. Kudos to the young man working the carts last night, you saved me about $80 and much hassle. There was a little thank you left at the pro shop for him this morning when Troy brought me the bag much to my surprise.
Poolesville Golf Course
Played On 05/30/2015Course is in great shape
I usually play here once or twice a year, and let me tell you, right now the course is in absolutely terrific condition. Greens are fast and true, sometimes a bit tough to get them to hold approach shots, although being I was playing out of the rough most of the day might have had something to do with that. The course offers a nice variety of holes, some grip it rip it and some where a little more strategery is required. Got an awesome price, a $25 Hot Deal for an afternoon weekend round, even though it is just over an hour drive for me I would make the trip fairly often for this price.
Rattlewood Golf Course
Played On 11/08/2014Cool, well maybe even cold and breezy round, but a very nice course.
Temps hovered right about 50 with a medium breeze to make it feel even a bit cooler. I have read a number of negative reviews of Rattlewood, but to be perfectly honest I did not see much wrong at all, greens were fast, firm, true. They also insured you paid plenty of attention any time you were above the hole. My playing partner did not mention any issues with her teeing areas, but I did notice a few were a little uneven. Fairways were in very good shape and the rough was, well he rough, tough even to be penalizing without being totally demoralizing. Staff was terrific, the group in front of us was a little slow, but we still played in 4 hours. Maybe not as scenic as Little Bennett, but not by that much and all in all a much more fair golf course. Little Bennett has way too many blind shots, not saying I will not give that L.B. another go someday.
Lake Presidential Golf Club
Played On 05/25/2014Challenging track - some local knowledge required
Played it late on a Sunday afternoon, one relatively slow group was plugging up the course. The course itself was in good shape, some fairways might be a little thin, but the greens were solid. I played poorly for the most part and the course made sure I paid for all of my mistakes as should be the case. I will definitely get back for another go at this track. I got tricked on a few shots that could have been played differently if a guy knew how much room he had. Next time around I will know about these areas. Not sure I could justify the full price of $80ish, but for $60, it is worth the drive.
Augustine Golf Club
Played On 04/27/2014Course is coming around nicely
Absolutely wonderful weather on a Sunday morning, much better than my game was today. We played 18 holes in just over 4 hours, so nothing to complain about there. The greens are recovering quite nicely from the aeration that appeared to be done a few weeks ago. Rolled pretty true, but could have been a bit faster. Within a week or two they will completely heal and be even better and will most likely be rolling faster. The fairways are Bermuda, so with the lack of global warming this year they have not turned over yet, but if we can just get a few warm days in a row they should come around and the place will be back to the golf destination it once was. As always the people at the course were terrific.
Forest Greens Golf Club
Played On 10/26/2013Course in good shape
The wind was up so that even added to the challenges presented by Forest Greens. The course was in good shape, some of the fairways were a little thin, but all in all in good shape. The secondary rough was very unpredictable, including bare dirt and rock in some areas, but like I always say, if you don't like the conditions of the rough, hit it in the fairway. The greens were as good as I have ever played on at Forest Greens, quite fast and very true. As usual a few too many ball marks from the ignorant golfers left behind, but that is how it seems to be nowadays. I find those people as disgusting as the slow players. If you get a chance to play at Forest Greens any time soon, I would say go for it. We found a nice $50 hot deal on golfnow, but even at $60 it is a good deal.
South Riding Golf Club
Played On 10/6/2013Course is in great shape and found a $65 deal on a Sunday morning
Found a $65 deal on Golfnow.com and was a little worried the course might have some aeration or other maintenance going on, but that was not the case. The course offers relatively generous fairways for the most part and most of the greens are quite large, so you can find yourself with some substantially long putts even though you G.I.R. count might be up. The course was in great shape, fairways were full and firm, greens rolled true and fast enough to make you pay close attention when you were putting downhill, some areas in the rough were a bit on the dry side, but hey, it is the rough, you get whatever you get for not hitting it where you are supposed to hit it. A couple of the bunkers were a little rough, but again, what are we doing in there in the first place, I think the PGA should make their bunkers much less friendly so the guys are actually penalized for hitting into them. Chad in the pro shop was very friendly and helpful, the starter got us out right on time and we played in just a bit over 4 hours on a weekend morning. What more could you ask for.
Twin Lakes - Lakes Course
Played On 5/18/2013Course is in great shape, greens a little slow, but that is the only negative I experienced
It was a rainy day, but they were still allowing carts to go 90 degrees, which surprised me. The course was firm enough to take it as long as no clowns were out there slamming on the brakes and seeing how far they would skid. The fairways were nice and plush, the rough.............well maybe a little too plush, so keep it in the fairway, LOL. The greens were a little on the slow side, but they rolled very true, so it was just a matter of getting used to the slower than expected speed. All in all for a county course that takes the amount of play this place takes they are doing a great job of keeping it in shape thus far this year. Hit 'em straight!!!
Bristow Manor Golf Club
Played On 5/4/2013Course is coming along nicely this season
I have played there 3 times this year and every time it has been better. The pace was a little on the slow side today, but I do not get too bent out of shape about this in the DC area on weekend any more or I might lose my mind. The greens have pretty much fully healed from the Spring aeration and were rolling a little bit slow, but true. Fairways are in very nice shape too. The rough is well a little rough, but if I am in the rough I have no right to complain about the condition of it since I am not supposed to be there anyway. For around $50 on weekend mornings, there are not many other better deals out there.
Thanks for the great review kgk1958! We're glad you enjoyed your round and can't wait to have you back again!
