Could be a Great Course - But not today!

Played this course shortly after it reopened from over-seeding, so keep that in mind. BUT, it would have been nice to know the limitations of the course before shelling out $120 for a round.
Biggest Issues: The rough was just too long and unfair. I lost 5 balls that were slightly off the fairway (within 10 yards) because they buried down in the rough. I know that sounds stupid, but in the bright morning sun, we'd lose the view of the ball on drives before it landed and so it was not that easy to know exactly where to look. But really, it should not be THAT hard.
Also, the greens were not in good shape. Lots of spaces without grass and then bumpy from the manner in which they were mowed.
Also, where the rough was mowed, the clippings were left behind makin additional mess. The same was true for many fairways.
Smaller beefs: we had the 7:18 tee time and there was little to no help around. The starter was not there yet and one guy was getting carts and clubs and balls and he was having trouble getting folks out. NOTE: Range balls NOT included in the $120 price, and the $6 i paid for 30 balls got me the saddest looking range balls i have ever seen - one was even cut clear through.
SO, we liked the layout, it is pleasing to the eye, fun to pay (if not in the rough) but just not ready for play on November 6, and definitely not worth $120.

Dated and Dying

I had very fond memories of this course having played it many times, but all more than 20 years ago. Was in the area for a Friday night so decided to stay over and play here rather than pay the big bucks for Chambers Bay. Like I said, I recall liking the track and I remember it being a good value as well.

Well, it's not a good value anymore. And its not in good shape. And I swear they have not spent a dime on it since I played it 20 years ago. The clubhouse is a tiny little building from many years ago with small rooms, very small restrooms, and what you might expect from a run down Muni course - no towels, tp dispenser broken, etc. And the two bathroom houses out on the course - even worse shape.

The tee boxes are small and are not level. many have a mounding effect in the middle so that its hard to find a spot where the ball is level with your feet. And they were mostly chewed up, like there was not consistency or pattern to where they put the tee markers each day.

The groundskeeping was not great either. This course was once extremely pretty, with ponds and fountains and nice contrast from the edge of the fairway, the rough, and the natural. Now, the fairways are not bad, but the rough was very inconsistent, and the natural is sort of overtaking parts that were once manicured - especially around the water.

The greens were the best part of the course: large, irregular and with plenty of movement. And they were in reasonable shape.

But I found 3 or 4 bunkers during the round and I was in a footprint in 2 of those. And when I stood and looked around in the bunkers, I could not believe how many people had been in there and not raked. Who does that?!

I saved the worst for last. Of course there is no marshall - and this was a Saturday - but worse yet, they sent out a 5-some and a 6-some 3 groups ahead of us. And as you might imagine, it made for a 5 hour round. We had to pick up after 16 because we were going to be late getting to a dinner.

So... maybe they have really good twilight rates and no big groups, but, man, way to wreck what should have been an enjoyable Saturday round. Too much money for too little product. We will not be back.
