Weekend Golf, Not At Its Finest

I’ve played this course a few times in the last few years, and there are a few nice holes on this property to enjoy. While there is a lot of general tree trimming and removal work that needs to be done to make the course more playable, this visit has a handful of downed trees that hadn’t been cleaned up yet. Another big complaint of mine and everyone playing in my group was the length of the rough which is about an inch higher than it should be for a public golf course. The rough’s length makes it difficult for most golfers to advance the ball well, but even more problematic is that it eats up golf balls. I personally lost a few balls that were not too far off of fairways, and my group experienced the same issue as well on multiple holes. This results in a slower pace of play as people look for balls vs being able to readily find their shots and the unintentional consequence is a much slower pace of play.

I would like to see the rough height lowered to speed up the pace of play, and some money put into doing some much needed tree maintenance to produce a more playable course. Another fast upgrade would be switching out the little garden shovels in the divot mix containers for a “scoop” style of shovel that holds more material to better fill divots on tee boxes.

Still Disappointed with Bunkers

This was my first return visit in several years, but my memory of the poor bunker conditions remains intact. While I thought the practice green and greens were generally in good shape, the biggest playability issues during my visit were shaggy tee boxes that seemingly hadn’t been mowed recently and bunkers that continue to lack much if any sand. During my round I found myself in 3 bunkers and only one kind of had sand. Many of the bunkers I observed in the fairways or around the greens looked more like rock quarries than sand bunkers. Another golfer in my group commented that he would even attempt playing shots from those bunkers as damaging a $150 wedge wouldn’t be worth it.

To course management I suggest you fill in any bunkers that you are unable or unwilling to take care of as it would make more sense to reduce the number of bunkers to whatever quantity you can take care of as right now your bunkers make for a poor experience.

Poor Weekend Golf Experience

This course is a bit further than I typically like to venture for an early afternoon round, but I wanted to give it a shot for my second visit.

My arrival to the pro shop about 20 minutes before my tee time was met with an empty pro shop and it wasn’t until a cart boy noticed me waiting inside until he was able to get someone from the staff to come to the pro shop to check me in. The lady who checked me in asked for my golf now reservation number, something I’ve never been asked for in over 100 rounds of golf at various courses using Golfnow.

She got me my cart key and told me I could head over to the first tee as their starter had gone home for the day. I warmed up on the putting green for a few minutes before teeing off, only to realize there was another single ahead of me and then a foursome.

I ended up pairing up with the other single, but then we hit a roadblock of slow play by the foursome ahead of us, and when we tried to slow down a bit, there was then another group catching up to us and several other smaller groups behind them that jammed up the course. While slow weekend golf is the norm, they needed to have a starter to create pairings vs just letting people head out and then hit a roadblock with a slower group out there.

I only played 9 before calling it quits as the slow play and colder temps made it an unpleasant experience.

First Impressions of a Late Fall Visit

Today marks my 96th round of the year and needless to say, I've played a lot of different courses this year. Unfortunately, my experience at many other public golf courses means I look for certain aspects when visiting a course for the first time.

Since we're already late into the fall my expectations for conditions today were already set a bit lower than what I'd hope to experience in the spring - early fall. That being said, I thought the tee boxes around the course were quite shaggy (which should be an easy thing to fix coming from a former assistant superintendent). Also, the majority of the putting greens on the course still had a moderate to heavy dew on them despite the fact that I started my round after 10 am today. This lead to inconsistent putting speeds and should be a maintenance issue that is address by either knocking the dew off with a hose, whip, or a backpack blower. The golf cart I was given also had a loosely attached club rain hood (a nice perk to have in rainy conditions) which rattled around endlessly while driving around the course.

On the positive side, the lady in the pro shop was friendly, and there were some interesting holes on the course. I also commend the maintenance staff for doing a good job with the leaves, as I don't recall having any issues at all with leaves today which says a lot because there are a ton of trees around the property.

First Visit Thoughts on a Cold / Rainy Fall Day

I had heard about this course earlier this summer when I paired up with a golfer who was an employee at this course. He strongly suggested that I give it a shot, so today I finally made that happen even though it was later in the season than I had originally intended.

Overall, I enjoyed the layout and thought the tees, fairways, and rough were all in good condition given that it's late in the year. I was only in two bunkers, and both were in good condition despite the wet conditions that had started to pack down the sand.

My only mild complaint is that the greens had just recently been through the aerification process, so they were bumpy and somewhat inconsistent. Thanks to wet conditions and lots of residual sand still on most of the greens, putting speed was hard to gauge and breaks were much less prevalent than what I would expect in the summer.

I am certainly interested in returning and playing here again when the greens are healed up and rolling more consistently than what I encountered today.

Cooler and Windier Weather Arrives

With the cooler and windier fall weather arriving in the past week, I wanted to give myself a short course to play today. My previous visits here have usually been enjoyable so I was looking forward to another go on what I find to be an easy track. Since I was playing as a single, the starter was kind enough to let me jump out ahead of several foursomes that had teed off just a few minutes before I arrived. Thankfully this allowed me to play the front 9 rather quickly and when I encountered the group ahead of me, I just took the opportunity to practice chipping and putting while giving them space.

I thought the course was in decent condition especially the greens which were rolling well for a late season round. The tees and fairways were a bit shaggy compared to a number of the other courses that I play, but overall they were still in decent shape for the most part.

My only complaints about the course conditions would be: A) most of the bunkers I noticed around the course appeared to be washed out and/or in need of more sand, and B) there were a few hole locations cut on 2 or 3 greens that were in unfair / illegal locations. As a former assistant superintendent, I have cut countless tournament hole locations that are difficult, but that's not equivalent to the several illegal hole location that I encountered today.

End of Summer Review

This is a return visit for me and I was curious to see what type of condition the course would be in for an end of summer round. As a former golf course manager, I have an appreciation for the grounds crew that uses walk behind mowers on the greens. I thought most of the greens were in ok condition, but there are a few that have a fair amount of ball mark damage, likely the result of many golfers who lack general course etiquette.

Most of the fairways were in good condition, but I think my biggest complaint would be that the tee boxes that were quite shaggy. Since today was Labor Day, it is possible that maintenance skipped mowing the tees today, and I'm guessing (or at least hoping) the last day they had been mowed was Friday, but I thought they were a bit unkempt for a holiday weekend. While I personally didn't visit any bunkers today, most of the ones I looked at appeared to be in good shape from an appearance standpoint.

Overall, I still like the overall course layout and look forward to hopefully posting a lower score for my next visit as I had a sloppy back 9 today. If you haven't played this course yet, I would gladly recommend it as a good local course!

Wet and Windy!

Today marked my first visit to the course, and I knew today's conditions would be a bit iffy following heavy AM thunderstorms that dumped a ton of rain on the course.

While I didn't score as low as I would have liked for my first visit, the course left a good impression on me. There are some nice holes with subtle elevation changes for a course in the Chicagoland area. The most difficult aspect of the course today was the wind intensity that picked up after about 6 or 7 holes, and remained a challenging factor due to the wide open layout of the course. While I thought the greens were smooth and rolled fairly true, my two playing partners advised that most of their previous visits had experienced the greens rolling to a much faster degree.

I look forward to returning here in the future to post a number in the 70s rather than my disappointing performance today!

Heatwave Golf!

The weather for my first visit here was very hot and humid (friends suggested I was a bit crazy for venturing out with heat index levels above 105 *F), but thankfully the staff was very friendly and accommodating for all of the golfers out in the heat. There were several water coolers available on both the front & back 9, a range who came by with water & ice, and of course the beverage cart was making regular laps around the course.

I thought the course was generally in pretty good shape for a public course, but there were some diseased areas in a few fairways but that's not unexpected for a mid summer conditions. Two of the three bunkers I found were in decent condition, but the last bunker was one a few around the course that was labeled as ground under repair. Hopefully those few bunkers will be finished with their renovations and put back into normal service soon.

Weekend Blues

I've played here a number of times now, and have usually found this course to be in decent condition. Today was no exception as the greens, tees, and fairways all looked decent for the cost of the round.

My biggest complaints of the day came from the horrendously slow pace (5 hours, 5 minutes thanks to an outing and the general lack of a ranger which is needed to speed groups along) and about 3 or 4 different hole locations that were cut on the putting greens. Several of these flag locations were put on fairly severe slopes that are illegal hole locations (I know because I was formerly an assistant golf course superintendent) and were not fair locations.

Second Visit Thoughts

I last visited this course back in the fall when the tree dense course and plentiful leaves made finding golf balls nearly impossible if you were just off the fairways. Thankfully, this time most of the leaves were still up in the trees so finding tee shots was much easier.

While I think there are some interesting holes, this course has definitely been a victim of the wet spring weather. There were some areas of the golf course where standing water was an issue, and the par 5 18th hole was basically converted to a short uphill par 4 because almost the entire fairway was too wet to be maintained. While I think it was smart to shorten the hole to a par 4 based on the wet conditions, the temporary tee box was basically an area of the rough which had been mowed down. This was a good idea, but the teeing area was made too small for 4 different sets of tees and the result was a muddy mess. This area should have either been expanded, or multiple temporary teeing areas should be used to avoid having to tee off from a muddy tee box.

I want to like this course, but it feels like it's long past its prime and is no longer maintained to its potential. While conversing with one of my playing partners, I heard that the owners have decided to sell the property. Maybe this is why the golf course and facility seem very dated and poorly maintained, but I think it's safe to say I likely won't be returning to play this course again.

First Impressions

Thanks to GolfNow, I found a new local course that I will likely play again in the near future. I don't know if I was lucky with the timing of my round, but I was very content with finishing a weekend round in under 3 hours. Overall I thought the course had a decent layout, but there are certainly a few holes where fairways are rather tight with water hazards that come into play.

Pros:
- Tees, fairways, and greens were fairly well maintained, and the green rolled pretty true.
- Multiple water holes make a shorter course a bit more challenging for golfers trying to test the accuracy of their shot placement.

Cons:
- The bunkers around the course were in need of some attention and needed much more sand and less rocks and pebbles.

Overall, I appreciated the general layout of the course and look forward to playing again to beat today's score... Hopefully my next visit won't have another triple bogey on a par 4 where I hit two balls into the water!

Return visit

Weekend golf is usually painfully slow, but today’s visit was lucky timing as I began immediately after an outing which had just ended. I finished my round in under 2 hours behind another single who also zoomed through the course.

Positives:
- Short distance and extra par 3s give the shorter irons more action.
- Course fairways, greens, and tees were in acceptable condition.

Negatives:
- Fleet of golf carts are in need of being replaced.
- Only found two bunkers today, but both were crusty and in poor condition. Need more sand and some TLC.
- From a cosmetic standpoint things such as fence posts, signs, cart paths, and bridges could use some attention and updates.

Return Visit on Holiday Weekend

After playing here during the early spring in much cooler temperatures, I was ready to come back and experience this course again with warmer weather conditions. While this course isn't very long and I should likely be playing from the tips, I opted for the gold/black tee combination which plays just over 6200 yds.

The staff within the pro shop was very friendly, but unfortunately the pace of play was much slower than I prefer but about average for most weekend rounds at about 4.5 hours. I was allowed to play as a single, but unfortunately I knew I wasn't going anywhere quickly as there were multiple foursomes ahead of me. To make the most of the slow conditions, I spent about 5-10 minutes on each green just chipping, putting, and practicing bunker shots as I usually had a 1-2 hole gap between another foursome behind me.

I thought the greens were rolling quite well, and the bunkers were in good condition despite being a little packed down with some rain earlier in the day. Following lots of rain in the past week or two, there was still some standing water in some areas of the rough but most of the fairways were in reasonable. I think my only criticism was that fairways seemed to be a little shaggier than what I'd prefer, and the rough hadn't been recently cut. While the longer rough can make a shorter course more challenging, as a public course that gets a fair amount of play, I think this is unfavorable as it significantly slows down play. However, I think the main reason for the long rough was due to the wet conditions that likely prevented maintenance from mowing it earlier in the week.

All in all, this is a good option for golfers looking for a slightly shorter course, but one that offers a variety of well designed holes to enjoy. I'll be back again.

First visit thoughts

Thanks to Mother’s Day and some cooler weather, the course was wide open today so I was able to fly through in 2 hours 30 minutes. Due to recent rain the course was cart path only, but I thought it was in good shape in the vast majority of areas despite the recent rain. I thought the fairways were a bit shaggy, but overall in good condition. The carts seemed to be brand new and included one of the quietest motors I’ve recently experienced and had a built in ball washer and club cleaner that was a nice touch. I’m guessing this is supposed to make up for not having any ball washers at the tee boxes. I was a little disappointed that the course’s water coolers weren’t stocked today, as each of the water coolers I found was completely empty.

While this course is significant shorter than most courses I play, there are a few longer par 3s that can be challenging without a good tee shot. The typical par 4s are incredibly short and didn’t demand anything more than a mid to long iron layup or a 5 wood for a few of the slightly longer ones. I found myself hitting about 70 percent of the greens in regulation which is a bit higher than my usual average, but unfortunately I wasn’t putting well enough today to make any reasonable birdie opportunities I was faced with.

Overall, this was a respectable course that I would like to play again when I can find another good deal on the rates as I think their normally posted rates are higher than warranted. Hopefully my next visit will be made on another day when I can play quickly and hopefully make some birdie putts!

Cold, Wet, and Rainy May Golf

This is the third time I've played this course in 2019, and unfortunately this visit was my least favorite one thanks to the lousy weather conditions. While the temperatures were expected to be close to 50 and there was a chance of later afternoon rain, the weather never broke 50 degrees and the rain arrived early. I made a poor decision to leave my rain gear in the car, but I pushed through the round despite the conditions. I was paired up with 3 other guys, and two of those guys decided to call it quits after about 11 holes, but I stuck it out through the rain with my cart mate to finish the round.

The course conditions were still very saturated in many areas, and numerous bunkers had standing water that hadn't been removed. Bunker conditions were poor as the sand was packed and hadn't seemingly been raked in a few days.

Overall the course has a few nice holes, but I was still surprised that they haven't put out their true back tee markers yet. Instead of having tees back at the tips, they have a blue/white tee marker on all holes. I'm not sure if this is an attempt to save the back tees for later in the season, but I would like to see the real distance for a few of the longer holes where the back tee boxes weren't being utilized.

Returning for a Another Attempt After a Poor Performance

This review marks the 4th or 5th time that I've played this course, and I have largely enjoyed playing here during my past visits. My weekend visit had a few positives and negatives that I wanted to share.

The positives: 1) We had about 5" of rain in the past week, but the course was still open to cart paths only and most areas were tolerable with the exception of a few wet spots that were to be expected. 2) The staff was friendly in the pro shop, bag drop area, and in the halfway house. 3) I played one of my best rounds of the year thus far!

The negatives: 1) The warmer weather this weekend meant that the course was going to be busy and rounds longer than usual with many weekend golfers (especially with cart path only rules in effect), but the round took about 5 hours 15 minutes. We specifically had at least 2 groups ahead of us that were quite slow, but to my knowledge no ranger ever intervened to try and speed up play. 2) On the third hole, there is a driving range on the left side that has unsightly, ripped up nets that need to be either fixed or replaced as they are an eyesore and are there to keep people on the course safe from any stragglers using the range.

Overall, it's a decent course with some holes that can demand fairly accurate tee shots to avoid trouble.

First Impressions

Spring weather finally arrived today and I wasn’t the only golfer who had realized it. The East course was busy and I knew it would be at least a 4 hour round to make it around the course. From the start the conditions of the course were quite wet and saturated in some areas, maybe a result of some recent rain, but maybe a lack of sufficient drainage. Bunkers were raked but seemed inconsistent with the sand quality in the 3 I found during my round.

A disappointing part of my experience was all of the tree and shrub work that had likely been started the week prior to my visit, but hadn’t been cleaned up. There were piles of branches and derbies present in multiple areas of the rough and near some green surrounds that had been gathered but never picked up. It was a poor maintenance decision to go all out with trimming if a cleanup crew couldn’t remove the debris.
Also not a fan of greens lacking collars and formal approaches.

I got a good price for the round, which included very nice / brand new leased carts, but I can’t say I’m interested in returning.

First visit

I found a deal I couldn’t pass up on golf now, so I decided to give this course a visit on an afternoon in late March. The course has an interesting layout with a combination of some nice holes and some really narrow greens. While it’s been a few days since our last heavy rains, the course had a number of really wet and saturated areas which resulted in lots of plugged shots on fairways, rough, and a few greens. The 16th hole was shut for a renovation which was disappointing but it’s a reason to return later in the season to check out the course again when conditions are firmer and the grass is actively growing. Overall a decent track that I’d like to play again to improve my front 9 score.

Ready for spring!

I was pleasantly surprised by the nice layout of this golf course. While the the rough and fairways were still quite wet following some heavy rain during the past week and the ground thawing out after winter, the greens were in better shape than expected for the beginning of March. The bunkers around the course didn’t appear to have any issues with standing water, but none of the bunkers had been raked in quite some time and contained firmly packed sand.

Despite this course being quite short in length, I think it provides a great opportunity to leave the driver at home and work on mostly iron shots, a few fairway metals off the tees of the longer holes, and chipping/pitching if you’re unable to get onto the greens in regulation. Overall, I was pleased with the course and look forward to returning to firmer and drier conditions where I won’t lose any plugged balls in fairways or the rough immediately surrounding the fairways.
