French Lick Resort - The Donald Ross Course
Played On 07/17/2017A true Test
Played 36 (thought about 54, but the heat was a little much after 36) in about 6-7 hours. Swallow your pride and play from the right tees. Played from the bronze and it was testing. Very few even lies, tons of elevation changes in the greens (you hit the wrong side and it's a two putt at best), and semi-blind shots abound here. But this is an old school golf course which I couldn't say enough great things about. Only a couple forced carries, but most of the fairways have a hill in them which you need to clear in order to have a <200 yard approach into. The par 3s are tough. 3 of the 4 are 210-230. And from the tips, depending on where the flag is on one of them, you might be hitting it 240. The 670 par 5 on the back is fun, too.. For $120 with free replays, this is a great way to spend a day. If you've got the extra cash, I'd get a forecaddie as having one would have helped a lot on a few shots the first time round. Facilities are great, the guys who were there could not have been nicer-- if you're around her,e go play it.
Kampen at Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex
Played On 07/09/2017Beast of a course from the back
At almost 6800 from the blues and 7400 from the blacks, this can be a beast, depending on how far you hit it and how safe you're keeping your drives. If you don't hit it over 250, 260...I'd say skip the blues.
The course is beautiful--it's got to be one of the best college courses in America..and one of the best courses in the MIdwest that I've played...I played on the way back from Chicago to Indianapolis on a Sunday afternoon when the course was relatively packed, and paid $50 and played in under three hours.
The par 3s on 2 and 17 were two of my favorites, but they favor a fade more than a draw. The few holes near the marsh on the back were fantastic. You'll use all your clubs in the bag...always one of the hallmarks to a great course. Easily my favorite Dye course in Indiana (though I haven't played French Lick)
River Bend Golf Course
Played On 07/08/2017A Nice Walk on a fair course
I'm with the last guy....snuck a six pack in my bag and walked nine on a Saturday afternoon. I was squeezed between a couple twosomes but enjoyed my nine holes. And for $22 for an out -of-towner, it was a great deal. The course itself has a few teeth here and there. Keep the ball in play is key...a fair amount of woods and fescue/marsh to eat up wayward hits.
I was visiting a friend nearby and know that the area is pretty wealthy...to find a weekend nine for $22 ($37 for 18) on a great walking course with an interesting enough layout and great conditions...what's not to like. Yeah, it's probably slow most times in the morning and there are a lot of guys who don't seem to know a lot about golf around, but whatever.. Ditch the cart, grab a few, and go for a nice walk.
The Trophy Club
Played On 06/25/2017One of my favorites in Indy
I've been coming to Indy every summer for a few years and always make sure to make the drive out and play Trophy Club a few times during my trip. It's my favorite track in Indy--along with Purgatory--and I've played most of them.. It's hard to beat for $32 at 3pm on a weekend, too. Fescue is dire during the summer, so keep it in play. Better to play short, than go long and through the fairway on a lot of the holes. But risk reward play abounds. Greens are pretty good and run smoothly and quickly enough to give you pause, especially with some of the tough pin locations that are often there . A lot of interesting holes--shortish par fives that beg you to go for it in two, but are incredibly tough. Great selection of par 3s. When the wind is up--and apparently that's pretty often, club selection can be 2-3 either way. I'd go back and play every day if it wasn't 40 mins from my place. $13 six packs of beer, too, has to be the cheapest I've ever seen on a golf course.. Can't recommend it enough.
Broad Run Golfer's Club
Played On 11/05/2016always a good round here
I've been playing Broad Run for a few years and have always considered it a treat to play--the only public course nearby that's more expensive is Glen Mills. But it's always in great condition. The greens are always medium-to-fast and I've never had a problem with the condition of the tee boxes, fairways, or greens. The bunkers are currently a little hard, but whatever, it's November. Compared to all the other public courses within a half hour of west chester, this is top notch. I'd say only glen mills has it beat. Stunning views of the countryside from a few tee boxes and fairways.
The only drawback here is rounds on the weekend can be pretty slow. But that's true everywhere here. I've liked it so much that I recently joined (their young professional prices are a steal).
It also has my favorite first and closing holes around...two par fives, one of them easily reachable, but both risk reward. Not to mention a diverse selection of par threes...one pin-seeking, hole-in-one type, one a hundred feet downhill, and two mid-range ones. There are a handful of par fours that if you walk away with par, you're happy. It's challenging through and through, but there are a lot of birdie holes, too. My kind of golf.
Wyncote Golf Club
Played On 10/12/2015Great course, as always
Yeah, the starter and guy inside are a bit surly, but whatever. This place is always great to play...fast greens (especially from above the hole) and thick rough. Keep it in bounds and below the hole to score. Aside from Glen Mills (2x as expensive) this is the best public course anywhere near West Chester.
EagleSticks Golf Club
Played On 06/17/2014great course with tough greens
I got out early on a cross-country trip...flew around in just under three hrs, so pace of play weekday early mornings no problem. Course is in a kind of dumpy part of town, but it was legit. Lots of different kinds of shots. ..good target up and down hillside golf...greens were at a 10 when i was there and immaculate. ..especially for $40 with a cart. I'd kill to have this place where i live at that price (easy $75 in eastern pa ). I'd definitely come back and play if in the area. Solid, tough course.
Downingtown Country Club
Played On 05/23/2014fast greens, well-maintained course
I got on the course on a friday for $25 on golfnow...which is a far cry from what the course itself charges. But nevertheless, the course is well-maintained and definitely a fun course to play. Fast greens, pretty wide fairways, (though there are trees on both ends, so you've got to keep it relatively straight), fair amount of bunkers (not in great condition). But the greens alone make the course worth it. Pretty short course...but it's a fun afternoon on a course which you can try and score low.
