Don't be fooled by the "Executive" course rating

It's a treat to play a mountain course versus the desert courses I am used to in Tucson. Most "executive" courses I've played in the past in California for example, had lots of par 3's with holes under 100 yards each. Not here. Most of the par 3's were near 200 yards from the white tees. Our hybrids, mid and long irons got used a lot today. The best part is there are at least 4 or 5 holes where you can still let the big dog fly! If you can work the ball around the tall pines, you'll have an advantage. The course was in immaculate shape, and the views were breathtaking.

Accuracy and local knowledge is key

This is a pretty nice course. The layout is tough as there are a few forced carries, and holes that will sucker you into pulling out a driver when all you need is an iron off the tee. 18 is a great example, as there are several spots where the creek crosses the fairway, but you won't see that from the tee box.

Summer is a little too hard on the bermuda at this course

I have stayed away from Forty Niner the last four years because of the terrible conditions at the course when IRI (Mis)Management was in charge. I had heard that the course was making a comeback so I decided to give it a shot. The greens had just been aerated so I expected a rough day on the putting surfaces. What I found disappointing is how sparse the grass was along the fairways. The staff were exceptionally nice and apologetic about the conditions, assuring me that when fall/winter hits and the winter rye grass comes in, the course will once again be lush and green. The problem is that's also true about every other course in town so there's really no reason to golf here anymore. That's really a shame because it once was a very fun course to play.

Nearly six hour round.....ugh

I used to enjoy playing the Pines, but now I only play if I have at least six hours to play, because this course plays slooooooooow. There were no marshalls on the course trying to speed things up. It is what it is I guess. just know unless you are one of the first groups to tee off for the day, your round will take at least five hours, likely more.

The pace of play on our round was excellent and the marshal came round about every 4 holes to check on pace of play, we finished our fourball round in under 4 hours. There was a slight hold up on the signature par 3 hole on the back nine as it's quite tricky - 175 yards from seniors tees over the canyon to an island green !!

Hi – Donn Hess here – GM at Quarry Pines Golf Course. Thank you for your comments – we are always trying to improve our service and quality – and your feedback helps us stay on course. We have experienced a few problems that have caused us some slow play issues in the last week. I want to assure you that what you experienced is not the norm, and we have already addressed most of the issues that created the problems. Quarry Pines is a unique layout – and the terrain causes us some challenges with pace of play. We have a team that cares – and we continue to strive to provide all our guests with a great golf experience. Thanks again for your comments. Donn

Fun to play, but takes a LOOOONNNG time to play

I like Cherry Island, but it seems the course is always overcrowded and the average golfer (who showed up the day we were there) really didn't care much for proper golf etiquette. Basic stuff like playing ready golf, raking bunkers after hitting seven or eight shots to try and get out..stuff like that. The marshalls talked to them but didn't really enforce the rule. When we finally made it to the turn, rather than keep us playing behind the slow pokes we played the front 9 a second time. Even with that, it took over 5 hours to finish 18 holes. I haven't been back since.
