Weird

This is an ideal place for the average amateur’s practice round of 18. Fairways are pretty much wide and straight. Few dog legs but overall the course is not very challenging with very little water (if any). Lots of 5-some groups on the course. Not that it matters because you’ll still finish in under 4 hours as the course is extremely short even from the tips. Fun little course to just knock the rust off or tackle specific parts of your game you struggle with for a cheap price.

Exceptional

This course is a must for anyone not familiar. It’s quite a drive up there past the White Tanks but it’s definitely worth the drive. The greens currently IN THE SUMMER are probably the absolute best greens in the valley right now. They’re extremely soft but very quick and true - don’t give your friends gimmies here because they will likely miss those 2-3 footers if they aren’t patient. Fairways are lovely with the typical few dry spots here and there. The rough is gorgeous. Thick, but not thick enough to lose a ball in it. The place is green, couple of solid water holes, plenty of drinking water stations, entertaining layout, enjoyable practice facility and good service. Just wish tee times were more available before 11am. I think the residents/members gobble all those tee times every day.

Careful when looking for a casual day of golf

This course is wildly despised for a few reasons. 1. The course seems to either have terrible drainage or a Super that waters WAY too much. No matter where your ball is, there’s a 60% chance it’s sitting in mud/water. 2. The course is the farthest thing from rewarding. Most tee shots will get you into trouble with a driver and even a 3 wood. Even if you hit one down the middle 250+ yards, the fairways will always funnel you to trouble. The greens are extremely protected and the slope rating doesn’t do the course any justice. Making putts outside of 4 feet become a chore as slopes are drastic and most greens won’t receive a check up from an approach shot nor a chip shot. Doesn’t matter what tees you play from or where your approach shot is, spend twice as much time thinking it through before you step up to shoot.

Another AZ course taking advantage

It’s late March, on the tail end of the whackiest pandemic in modern history. AZ golf courses have made more money in the past calendar year than ever before. Since golf’s popularity and participation has vastly grown, golf courses have jacked their prices up 20-30%. Why not? Good business management right there. But to charge all that extra money and then not use any of the profit to reinvest into the course itself is dishonorable. The course was in pathetic condition. Fairways are all patchy. They said the greens are a 10 on speed. They are much more like a 6. The greens are super fuzzy and slow. The driving range? Not a spot to stand without falling into a divot. Very poor maintenance all around. I paid $70 to play here. I played West then North. It took me and my group just under 3 hours to play the West course - backed up since the first tee box. When we finally make the turn coming to the North course, there were 3 groups waiting on the tee box. None of which were in front of us on the West... They were letting groups start their rounds in front of us on our turn. We waited about 30 minutes before teeing off on the North #1. At that point, I could have already finished 16 holes at any other course. So I walked off after my tee shot at #1. Such an unbelievable cash grab of a golf course. Go play anywhere else for less than $70 and get a much better experience. Although the staff in the pro shop were really nice, doesn’t mend such a pathetic golf experience.

No rain checks.

They had a tournament today. Late morning/early afternoon. Didn’t mention it on Golf Now or their website. Also didn’t mention it in the pro shop. The starter was the person to mention it. We played the front 9 in just under three hours. Went to go ask for a rain check and they declined.

I get it if normal pace of play was slow. That’s not the course/staff’s fault. But here’s my problem:

1. You have a tournament smack in the middle of the day. Why would you offer open tee times immediately following the tournament? Can’t be hurting for money that bad.

2. Why would you charge full price for a tee time following the tourney?

3. Why would you decline rain checks? The slow, congested play is YOUR fault at that point.

4. Why would you not have some sort of pre-booking notification of your tournament?

5. Despite all previous notations and having a fully packed tee sheet, you don’t schedule a cart girl? If you know you’re going have upset patrons, it should be a no-brainer to at least make sure they have some beers to keep them occupied.

Listen to me

This course is absolutely beautiful. Too bad it will be a private course in 2-3 years...Anyway, here’s my notes.

1. Odds are the average golfer (15+ handicap) will not play well here. If you do, bring golf balls and plenty of them. There is a gigantic amount of fairway to hit on these holes. But it’s also somehow very easy to put the ball out of play - on every shot.

2. The greens are no joke. Not only are they fast, but they’re undulating and that’s an understatement. There are hardly any even spots on any of the greens.

3. Knowing the greens are fast makes one think to lay up a little and let the ball climb the green. Good luck with that. The greens are not only heavily protected by luscious sand traps (with LOTS of real sand) but they’re also protected by elevated ridges at the front of the greens. Which means your approach shot has much higher odds of bouncing up and backwards or possibly shooting left or right rather than hitting firmly and creeping up the green.

4. Thus, flop shots are a savior from the golf gods!! If you can properly aim and control flop shots from a range of distances, then you will breeze through this course. The bump n run theory will likely do you no good here unless you’re a magician with your bump club.

5. Overall, the place is beautiful. The clubhouse is beautiful. Everything is new. The workers are awesome. The practice facility is nice. Just go play it and feel for yourself. Just be prepared for the challenge ahead of you. Drink plenty...Of beer.

Troon Course Quality

Went the very first day after over seed. Gotta say, this course was absolutely stunning. The pace of play was slow, obviously, as were the greens. For being freshly over seeded, the greens actually ran much faster than many other courses. The views and elevations were shocking. I play Quintero quite often so I can appreciate some good golf views when I see them. Practice facility is kind of a joke, though. Their driving range is only about 220 yards deep which meant no driver or 3 wood practice for me. All in all, very lovely course. Not sure I would pay $90+ to play here again. $60-$70 is more the range, in my opinion. Still, very impressed with my round.

Excellence

Another Troon course. And worthy. Beautiful sights, beautiful subdivisions, beautiful course. The only downers were that their practice amenities were nothing special and their bar and golf shop are extremely small. The place looks like a small water pump station. You would never expect such a magnificent course would be behind such a small bar and pro shop. If you’re with a group of buddies who like to sit around and drink at the end of the round, you might want to plan your 19th hole somewhere down in the valley afterwards. Other than that, this course is phenomenal. I will definitely play here more often.

True Review

I have played this course about 10 times now. Yes, the course does not have a solid cart path so you’re riding around on bumping dirt roads and the facility doesn’t offer anything fancy in regards to practice amenities. However, this is a truly amazing course to play for the price. I don’t care who owns it, I don’t care about cart paths. I don’t care about the aesthetics. I care about golf and that’s it. This course has a links feel to it with wide open fairways and minimal obstacles to punish you for good shots. Granted some bunkers are your typical rock traps but most of them are truly soft and allow for an honest bunker shot. The fairways are in tremendous shape and the greens are absolutely brutal in regards to speed. The greens make you consider every approach shot carefully because the slopes and speeds will throw any handicapper off. For the money, you just can’t beat such a pleasant course. The pace of play is the only downfall for me. It is always slow but I feel as though that’s due to the challenging greens. You sit for 5 minutes on your second shot wondering what the heck the guys in front of you are doing up there and then once you’re on the green for 5 minutes 3-putting, you understand why the pace of play slows. Your average golfer will not get up and down on half the holes. Worth the play and money despite it.

Yuck

I have played this course three times now. I generally try to give every course that I don’t like the first time a second chance. I have given Trilogy TWO second chances and I was miserably let down. I have played in September, November and now March. The course is known for it’s abysmal pace of play but when it’s cart path only, it only furthers the frustration in waiting. Took my group 5 hours and 20 minutes to play. The fairways and tee boxes were great which is the only good thing I can say. The greens were not green at all. Brown and not true whatsoever. The practice green was just as horrid. Our cart started dying after the 12th hole and we had to push it with what little juice it had left. Not worth the rate they charge. Ever. I have played many local courses for $40 in the past two weeks that are in much better shape and provide a much better experience than Trilogy. Sorry, but I will not be returning.

Worth it

It’s middle of July. 90% of the golf courses around are in tough condition. But Cimmaron, Cimmaron is in almost WINTER condition. Fairways are luscious and dark green, tee boxes are plush, sand traps actually have sand in them, greens were aerated few weeks ago but slowly recovering. Definitely a challenging course due to the constant water but if you’re a controlled swinger, you can easily avoid the drip. Beer is literally $1 a can, staff is awesome, carts are in better shape than most people’s cars. It’s $45 in the early morning. After 10am, it drops to $22. Either way, completely worth it to me. At least once.

One of my favorites

I have played this course about 20 times since November ‘18. It’s right by my house and is always a blast to play. The layout is unlike any other in the area. Challenging yet forgiving. FAIR WARNING if you are like me when I first started golfing, slicing to the right on your drives, this will be a frustrating place. Mainly because a lot of the holes have the right side of the fairway either blocked-off with brush or fencing or lined with homes. So bring extra balls because you will lose plenty. The entire course is brilliant in my opinion. No 5 stars though. They have a tiny putting green and a driving range where you can’t use a driver. That is just an absolute bummer. Nothing like going up to the first tee box and taking a breakfast ball because you can’t warm up. Also, I know the main complaint is the greens condition in the summer. They say that their water pump broke and it’s difficult to recover. But I am told by residents there that they say that every year so they don’t have to spend the money on keeping the place up to par. (Funny pun) They still try to charge you $25 in the months of April and May even when their greens start to slip. That’s ridiculous. If they made somewhat of an effort to keep their course in relevant shape in the summer as the rest of the local courses do, I would gladly pay $20-$25 to play this in the summer. Also, have fun on the par-3 number 12. The tee box is 5 feet from a dog park. Good luck hitting it over the water with chuahua’s barking at you.
