Old Course at Ballybunion Golf Club
Played On 07/12/2019One of Ireland's best
Has played Ballybunion about 12 years ago and was eager to get back. I remembered nearly every hole, which to me, is the sign of a good golf course.
Now, we played it off the plane, as the first of five courses we'd play over the next four days. So we were tired and rusty. But caddies Brian and Brian made the day so much fun and surely helped us find many, many golf balls that we wouldn't have found on our own.
The par 3s are terrific and all the holes along the water are beautiful. Enjoyed it so much.
Hammock Beach Resort - The Conservatory Course
Played On 06/16/2019Don't overlook this one for the Ocean Course
The Ocean Course at Hammock Beach is terrific and there's a reason why it's a draw, but do not pass up a chance to play the Conservatory. It's terrific and frankly it's more playable than the Ocean, meaning you don't have to be quite as precise with all parts of your game.
It's challenging for sure, but playing it the day after the Ocean I realized what I was missing, having passed it up all these years.
The par 3s were great, the course was in terrific shape and overall it's a solid golf experience. Highly recommend it.
Arthur Hills Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort
Played On 07/31/2018Pleasantly surprised...
I've been to Hilton Head at least a dozen times and have played all over the island. Was looking for a round of golf sort of at the last minute and was lucky enough to score a tee time here with my son and uncle.
It was spectacular. I mean, there was not a blade of grass out of place anywhere on the property. Just beautiful. There are memorable holes everywhere, especially the par 3s and any of the holes that face toward the historic Leamington lighthouse.
A memorable morning with family. You can bet I'll be back as soon as I get the chance.
Monifieth Golf Links - The Medal Course
Played On 07/18/2018Neat vibe
Love the different experiences while playing golf in Scotland and this fits the bill.
There were three different clubs and one pro shop lined up down the 18th hole of the medal course. Those three clubs have privileges at this course and the adjacent Ashludie course.
There were so many people playing on this day that it was almost dangerous. Balls flying all over the place. But it made the experience more authentic and it was a good day.
The course was brown because of the dry Scottish summer but that didn't matter. The layout was neat, and most of the course was played along the railroad. We played with a crosswind the whole round that made it challenging, but again, that's what makes experiences like this so great.
Arbroath Links Golf Course
Played On 07/17/2018Golf as it was meant to be...
I absolutely loved this place. We walked up at 5:30PM and asked if we could play. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating and sent us right out at 6PM, we played in 3 hours, 20 minutes. Then we went into the restaurant and had a great dunner.
So much fun. Feel like this is a golf course that you could play every day and have fun each time. Can't say that about every golf course, but gladly think that about this place. You can change tees if you want, play different shots all over the place...just a lot of fun at a place that I stumbled upon at the last moment. Be careful of the burn that comes into play on several holes. It'll jump up and bite you.
Scotscraig Golf Club
Played On 07/15/2018Quaint and cool...
I was looking forward to playing here more than any place else on our trip. It didn't disappoint. For starters, the staff was terrific and lunch was great.
But it's an overall cool spot. You pull up, park, walk across the street and there you are. The course was brown because of the dry Scottish summer but that didn't matter. It's fun to hit golf shots that roll for miles because that never happens in the states.
I think it would benefit to play this course more than once. There were a few quirky spots where it would've been good to have more information, but it didn't happen so often that it was a problem.
A cool experience. Love golf in Scotland.
Fairmont St. Andrews - The Kittocks Course
Played On 07/15/2018A fun track
Have to admit, anytime you have to drive past the Old Course to play golf somewhere else, you're always going to feel disappointed.
But this place was sneaky good. For starters, it was in great shape despite that dry conditions in Scotland all summer. The pace of pay was great and the holes were strong. It was a bit of a difficult walk for Americans that don't often walk - long walks between holes and from the 18th green to the clubhouse. But that's nitpicking.
A day in St. Andrews with great weather can never be a bad thing.
Glasgow Gailes Golf Club
Played On 07/14/2018A beautiful day...
We played this off the plane, from an overnight flight from the states. The course was good but I'm having difficulty remembering many of the holes. I remember the first and last holes, and the par 3s, but I don't remember much more than that and I can't quite figure out the reason.
It also doesn't help that it's in the same area as Royal Troon, Prestwick and Western Gailes, more popular golf courses right there along the coast. Still, a day of golf in Scotland beats a day of golf just about anywhere else.
St. Andrews Links - Eden Course
Played On 04/16/2018Give it a look while in town
This was the perfect place to shake off the rust and yawns from flying all night. It's a course in St. Andrews, but it's not the Old, where you really want to make sure that you're well rested.
The walk was terrific, even on this somewhat chilly afternoon. The front nine was stronger than the back, but still, overall, it was a great experience. I'd play again in a heartbeat it if was off the plane, or if I wanted to get in a few holes at the end of the day chasing daylight.
The Club at Seven Canyons
Played On 03/02/2018Beautiful scenery...
In town for a buddy's wedding and was able to get out and play 18 on a perfect, beautiful March morning.
This is a terrific club, with beautiful views and scenery of the red rock mountains all over the place. Breathtaking.
The routing is a little out of sorts, it takes you awhile to figure out where the next hole is from time to time. But there are some good, memorable holes (especially the par 3s) that makes the whole experience worthwhile.
Lake Nona Golf & Country Club
Played On 01/22/2018Best course in Orlando...
The title of this piece says it all. This is the best golf course in Orlando and I don't think it's particularly close.
The layout is terrific, it's groomed to perfection and it's just a great, great overall golf experience. The par 3 holes have a great variety, as do the 4s and 5s.
It's impossible not to enjoy the whole round. Simply impossible.
Royal Blue Golf Course at Baha Mar
Played On 11/29/2017A splendid afternoon
In town to cover the Hero World Challenge and was able to take an afternoon to get over to Royal Blue. Thrilled that I did.
For starters, the place was absolutely pristine. Every blade of grass was manicured to perfection and the greens were fabulous.
The whole layout was fun, particularly the back nine. Everything was memorable and I particularly liked being able to hit a different club into each of the par-3 holes.
The Baha Mar area is great and we were able to have a few drinks afterward staring over a beautiful setting. Can't wait to get back there.
TPC Summerlin
Played On 11/14/2017A beautiful afternoon
The weather was absolutely perfect, which made the day even more terrific.
What was the most amazing was how great of shape the course was considering the PGA Tour event just came through town a week earlier. With so much traffic on the course during the tournament you'd think it'd be a little more worn, but it wasn't. The greens rolled nicely and the overall course was great.
I particularly likes the par 3s. And a par at the par-4 final hole with water all down the left topped off the round in fine fashion.
Hammock Beach Resort - The Ocean Course
Played On 11/02/2017A pure treat
Keep in mind, the Ocean Course was ravaged by two hurricanes in a 13-month span. Crazy. But with an aggressive gameplan to get the place put together properly, they knocked this one out of the ballpark.
Simply, the course is tremendous. The layout is fun with a smattering of both long and short holes and the ones alongside the ocean (6 in total that face the beach) are as breathtaking as anything you'll find in Florida. Hands down.
The staff was a joy to meet with and everything on the day, from beginning to end, was first class. It also helped that the day was a Perfect 10 as far as weather.
Can't wait to get back there.
ChampionsGate Golf Club - National
Played On 10/20/2017Good overall experience
ChampionsGate is a great facility with a friendly staff and a great atmosphere inside if you'd like to dine or have a drink.
On the course the greens were just redone and obviously need some time to mature but they're an upgrade over what they had before.
Fairways Country Club
Played On 10/13/2017Perfect for what I need
This is exactly what I need on a regular basis - a place that's close to my house, rarely busy and a short little layout that is perfect for my golf-crazed 11-year-old son.
Didn't know what to expect when I first went there (it's in the middle of a 55-over community) but I was pleasantly surprised. The people are friendly and, more importantly, the greens were decent, which is all I need to make me happy. I'll be back...a lot.
The Osprey at Haig Point Club
Played On 08/02/2017A terrific day on a terrific layout
This is the nine-hole layout that adjoins the Haig Point property and it's really, really great. I've visited Hilton Head often and always thought that it'd be difficult or time consuming to get over to Daufuskie Island, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
The ferry over to the island was only 30 minutes, and on a beautiful morning, it was peaceful boating across Calibogue Sound.
The course was fun and playable and I loved the variety of the holes, especially the par 3s. It may be easy to overlook this nine-hole stretch in favor of the signature course but if you get over there and have time, you won't be disappointed by taking the time to swat it around the Osprey.
Nefyn Golf Club - Yellow/Blue Course
Played On 07/16/2017You can see the Sea from everywhere...
We played 9 on the New and 9 on the Old. Both were terrific.
First, you can see the Irish Sea from every hole, including while standing on all 18 tee boxes. The views are breathtaking.
The New was probably the better layout of the two sides, but if you make it there you absolutely HAVE to play the Old. The locals don't much because it's a tough, tough walk, but the views are some of the best in the world. That side has a couple quirky, blind shots but they do nothing to take away from the whole experience.
The tee shot on the first and ninth holes of the Old will make you weak in the knees. With tons of people walking down the path adjacent to it (because it's the only way to get to the beach) you better not hit it left.
A great, great day there.
Aberdovey Golf Club
Played On 07/15/2017Loved it...
It was quite a haul to get there, with long-winding roads hardly wide enough for one car being considered a two-lane road.
After white-knuckling it behind the wheel for more than an hour from Harlech, Aberdovey was well worth the adventure.
First, it was crazy busy there. Booked solid. Still, pace of play was perfect.
The blend of holes was terrific as was the setting. Some elevation, a couple blind shots, great par 3s...it had a little bit of everything.
Truly enjoyed the afternoon.
Royal St. David's Golf Club
Played On 07/15/2017One of the best in Wales
Played 72 holes in Wales during the trip, and only 6 holes were played in rain, but it was the first 6 at Royal St. David's. Sideways. The locals had no use for the day, but us four Americans stood up to the task.
The course would be tough in perfect conditions so you can imagine what the wet, windy start was like. But it was a true, beautiful links test with some truly great holes.
The par 3s were particularly memorable, especially the closing 18th hole, which my partner birdied.
I'd love another crack at it in perfect conditions. Still, the rain didn't dampen my affinity for it.
