Potential, but definitely needs work

I played this course once they reopened a week before their grand reopening since redesigning the course.

The good: The course layout was great, definitely not one of those courses where you take driver out every hole. Dog legs left and right, some short, some long holes, elevated greens, and hitting down onto a green. Makes for a good challenge.

The bad: The course was a little soggy as it rained a bit the day before, but still largely playable. As they have redesigned the course any GPS range fingers you use are useless until updated.

The ugly: course maintenance, course maintenance, course maintenance. Some of the greens were unkempt it was like putting off fairway grass. A few holes in the fairways had little pebbles covering the fairways. If you took a divot you would definitely damage your club face.

Overall, the course has potential to be a good course if they maintained it better. Will return in a few months in the summer to see if they maintain it better. Until then I dont recommend playing here for now.

Pick your poison

Played in a foursome where I was the only one who has never played the course, where as the others played this course multiple times. Each one of them said you can play this course 20 times and you will play it different each time.

Off the tee it provides you with options on how to play the hole. Will you challenge the fairway bunker and risk putting water into play where it wouldn't be if you clubbed down short? Lay it up short for a long approach shot? Not many courses in the area provide you with the multitude of options off the tee; most are take driver/less than driver and pipe it down as far as you can. Not Great Blue. You've got some hard choices ahead of you.

Fairways are in decent condition when you factor in early season conditions, greens were in great shape without yet being aerated, a few tee boxes are a little uneven which is fairly annoying.

A few negatives about the course: I booked online via their website a few days prior to the day of play and they somehow lost my booking. They had to squeeze me in where I should have already had a tee time. Second is something they can't really do anything about and that's duck/goose poop lines much of the holes, so if that's an issue for you probably should wait for the summer months.

A local favorite

If you've played golf with a few random strangers in the Portland area and you start talking about favorite courses to play in the area, chances are they'll say Stonecreek. For good reason.

The front line plays very links style, the back nine plays very typical of PNW golf with tree-lined fairways and elevation changes. The greens are usually immaculate, some of the best in the area for public courses if not the best. Best way to describe the greens, ICY.

One of the only playable golf courses in Portland during the wet/cold months, drainage is excellent.

I keep coming back and each time I enjoy the course more and more.s
