My favorite course south of Tucson

It has been a while since I made the trek down 19 to this gem of a course. The views are spectacular. Love the elevated tees on numerous holes. I think 13 is their signature hole. Definitely worth some quick pictures as it oversees the valley. The course was in great shape. Fairways were the best I’ve seen in a really long time. The greens are coming along nicely! Even the sand traps were quite nice and very few rocks! It was cart path only for us. I was fine with that. It bugs some people, but I view it as getting in some good walking and enjoying more of the day. The only thing I didn’t understand was that there was no food and beverage cart going around the course. Besides that, I truly enjoyed the round.

The prettiest course in the area

I have played this one a handful of times since moving to Tucson a couple of years ago. The views are sensational. The signature hole, number 18, is stunning. It’s worth it to tee it up on the black tees just for the view itself.

Pros - Tee boxes and fairways are in great shape. The staff are exceptional and treat everyone wonderfully.

Cons - Unfortunately, they just aerated the greens, so they’re bumpy and sandy. The sand traps have some rocks in them and are very firm, so they’re really dirt traps. This seems to be the norm in Tucson.

Overall, I love this course and love playing it!

Still a great course

I’ve played this one a number of times and it never ceases to challenge. Unfortunately, some of the greens are already showing some signs that the summer could be a brutal one for them. Usually, this time of year, the greens are fast and very nice. Sadly, whoever is taking care of the greens has got a job of front of him this year as a few of them are already getting some bad spots to them (some rather large). The fairways are in decent shape, but they need to work on the areas where golf carts enter the fairways. Don’t know if I have an answer for that really, but the grass is basically gone from wear. Tee boxes are in great shape.

I love this course. I just hope that this isn’t a bad sign of things to come.

Great local course and layout

I arrived for my early morning tee time. I asked about hitting some range balls, but there is no practice range?? I found out later that an apartment complex was built in its place. Sadly, that makes the first couple to three holes a little challenging. That aside, I really loved the layout. I got to play with three great guys who knew the course well. The pin placements were challenging to say the least. Really made you plan out play around and on the greens. Tee boxes were all in great shape as well as the greens. The “sand” traps were more like compact wet dirt. But, that’s a Tucson thing, so I gotta give this place props that there weren’t many rocks in the traps like a lot of courses in and around Tucson.

The biggest challenge is that the greens really don’t hold at all, so plan on a lot of roll even with higher hit shots. Some of the greens are easier to read than others, make sure to read from both sides of the pin.

The back nine is beautiful with a out of scenic views, elevated tees and remnants of the quarry. It’s a must play for the back none for sure. The short par 3 on the back 9 is deceptively challenging if the pin is in the back. The drop off is intense and a brutal uphill putt. Conversely, if you go long and end up in the rough back of the green it’s a fast downhill, so an incredibly hard second shot to stick above the crest of the ridge. Escaping with a par is boast worthy. Two guys I played with four putted this green and one was a single digit handicap who broke 80.

All in all, great experience. Wish they had a driving range!

A lot of fun

Had a great time playing this course. I decided to have a little fun and play from the blues. Made it more challenging for sure. Tee boxes were mostly in good shape minus 3 or 4 of them. Fairways were in good shape as well. They were just opened back up from overseeding, so in another couple weeks, they’ll be great! The greens were slow…again…overseeding. Overall, had a fabulous time and was paired with two gentleman who play the course all of the time, so it was like playing with a couple of caddies!

Brutally Hot but Awesome Course

Had a great time on this course. Beautiful views. Greens in solid shape. Traps are so so. It’s Tucson, so this seems to be a thing out here which I have NEVER understood since moving here. Sand traps at almost every course I have played are awful. It’s more like packed dirt mixed with rocks. Not good on a golf club.

Besides that, this course is a must play. Love playing it in the summer because the green fees are half of what they are in the fall/spring.

I got paired with a really nice guy and we had a great time chasing the little white ball.

It’s a must play course if you’re in Tucson.

Great New Course with some hesitation

Okay - had a wonderful time playing this small and short brand new Par 3 nine hole course. Great layout! Excellent condition. Greens are pristine as are the traps, rough, etc. Fantastic small clubhouse, solid putting green and practice area. My only negative take is it cost $80 for two of us to play a 9 hole par three course. Most par three courses are either less money when only 9 holes or you get 18 holes for that price. You can walk this course in an hour or so. So, it’s fast! The longest hole is 18 which was about 168 yards. Most of the others were between 100-140. We had a great time. It’s a great little nine hole course. Just a little high for 9 holes and a par three course. Loved it though!!

Monsoon Season

Monsoon season has arrived in the high desert which means afternoon golf is both entertaining and risky. Del Lago is nestled in a neighborhood in Vail and has some good views of the Rincon Mountains nearby and Mt Lemmon in the distance. There are some fun elevated tees, challenging blind dog legs, and frequent winds which makes you think about what club to hit whether it’s a head, tail or cross wind. I learned that again as I hit my 7 iron on #7. I hit it solid and watched the head wind grab it and drop it 5 yards shy of the green with the pin in the back. Of course the opposite is quite fun when I hit my tee shot on #10 with a tail wind 335 yards when I usually average around 260-280 depending on how solidify I hit it. It’s an elevated tee shot with a downhill landing, so on a tailwind day, you get both aids! On this day, I played the front nine and a monsoon started to threaten which brought lightning. I don’t do lightning. So, at the turn, I came inside and waited it out. Once the lightning finished, I ended up playing the back 9 in an hour and 15 minutes because most had left!

The positives: Greens are green. Fairways are green. Tees are green. The course is in great shape. It’s a course that brings some good challenges and has something for every level of player in my opinion. If you’re advanced then hit from the tips and test that experience. If you’re not a long ball hitter then hit from the second tees. It takes a lot of the desert out and allows for a nice round. I split the difference and play from the gold tees. The people here are nice. I’ve interacted with multiple people in the golf shop, marshalls, and cart gals. They’ve all been fantastic.

The negatives: The sand traps are awful. And I mean awful. They’re more like compacted mud with rocks to chip your irons traps. What is it with Tucson and sand traps with dirt and rocks instead of actual sand??? Honestly, I take a drop every time I get in one. I don’t want to chip my clubs. It’s a pretty big negative because I like the challenge of sand play, but I refuse to play out of these. Seems to be a thing in the high desert at other courses as well. The only other negative is picky and that is that the greens were really slow. That being said, I get it. It’s summertime here and cutting them to the point it takes to make them fast would probably kill them with the desert heat. I’ve played this course in the fall, winter and spring and the greens are quicker those times of year.

All in all, this course is well worth it especially for a hot rate!

Wonderful time and views!

I had an opportunity to play this course at around $80. This is about $40 less than what a normal teatime cost for this course. When I arrived, I was greeted very nicely from the gentleman in the pro shop. He pointed me to the carts as well as to the range. They are set my card outside with my last name on it. I thought that was a pretty cool touch. The layout and views of this golf course are absolutely gorgeous. At one point, I turned around and I could see the entire city of Tucson with the backdrop of Mount Lemmon. I love the elevated teas, heading up to Greene, heading down to a green, and the different challenges of a not so flat surface even in the fairway. The only negative that I can think of for this place is it the greens were not in the greatest of shape. Even after all of the rain that we’ve had this summer, I would’ve thought that the greens would’ve been immaculate. There is no way I would pay $120 for a round of golf with greens that we had patches, poorly mowed bald spots, and brown patch in areas. Everything else was wonderful. I will definitely come back and enjoy another round.

Always a good day to play Tour 18

Second time to play here. The only hit today was that they pace was brutal. The course was stacked and there was no where to go. I played through 4 groups and was still stacked. That being said, I still love this place and will continue to go back because the course is fantastic. Could have really used a cart person out there today with water. With no water coolers due to Covid, I ran out of water and had no way of getting any with 5 holes to play and 100 degree heat index temps. I think Tour 18 needs to re-think the cart refreshment policy or put the coolers back out there. It's August for heaven's sake.

Tour 18 - Great Experience

I've wanting to play this course for years. I finally took advantage of a Hot Deal and couldn't wait to play it. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were gorgeous. The fairways are immaculate. I loved getting to play some of the iconic holes and man is it challenging. If you haven't played this before then it needs to be on your bucket list here in Houston.

Tin Cup...A lot of fun!

I grew up on the courses in Houston where the US Open scenes of the movie Tin Cup were filmed, so I have played those before and they are some of the best courses I've ever stepped foot on. I recently learned of the Tubac Golf Resort course being the location for the scenes that were shot of the charity tournament and the qualifying rounds. This course is a lot of fun. The Tin Cup locations are marked with signs and you can even try to make the 240 yard 3 wood shot that Costner made in the bet right before he was fired by Don Johnson's character. I highly recommend this course if you're a Tin Cup fan and like a well-groomed course. The staff are very nice in the shop as well. I'm definitely coming back.

Love this course!

What can I say. The views are gorgeous. The course is well-maintained. The folks in the golf shop are very kind and professional. The starter and marshall keep things moving along. I absolutely love the elevated tees. I played the white tees the first time I played here and then played the blues this past Sunday. I liked the blue tees better. Some of the pin placements were really challenging. Make sure to look at some of your putts from both sides as I definitely misread a few by only looking at them from one vantage point. Plenty of wildlife to see and of course the mountains. If you're a long ball hitter off the tee there are a couple of par 4's you can drive the green depending on how accurate you are with the big dog. I'll be back for sure.
