Good City-Owned Muni Course, AMAZING Views!

Be warned, it's maintained about as well as you think that a city-owned muni course in the middle of a city with a handful of employees would be. As long as you go into your round with that in mind, it's a really fun course to play. And as with ANY walk that you might take through San Francisco, you're going to be going up and down hills!

I live in SF and play this course every 4-6 weeks (when Presidio is too busy), and it is a fun course to play. The city doesn't have the funding to keep this in tip top shape, so unfortunately there are some rough patches around the course. But what suffers in course maintenance is absolutely made up for with the views! (see pictures from the famous 17th tee).

The white tees are about 4950 yards with only one par-5 (VERY short), and it's a par 68. That being said, this course can be sneaky tricky. Not finding the fairway can be detrimental since there is some pretty long rough around the course. Trees also line almost every fairway, so you might find yourself having to shape shots to stay out of the woods.

Getting a cart here is a bit of a pain since they only have a handful of them, and it's ALWAYS cart path only. About 6 months ago they had a string of a**holes flip 4 carts in only a couple weeks, so they changed the rules and they are very strict about it.

Also be forewarned, they're VERY strict about bringing outside alcohol onto the course. I've even been "caught" when I was trying to put beers into my bag in the parking lot. So do this at home... They've also came by on the course and given me the "we don't sell that type of beer here, you need to get rid of that now or leave."

The course was first built in 1902 with 3 holes, and expanded to 18 holes in 1917. I would say that the clubhouse reflects this fact. The cafe is decent with some good breakfast options, hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, etc.

All in all, it's a good price for a round of golf in the city, and one that you probably need to make sure to do for the views.

Great course! Challenging, especially windy

I was excited to play Sea Ranch while visiting family in the area, and I was not disappointed!
This links-style course was in great shape with rain a few weeks ago, but had time to dry out just enough where the fairways and greens were nice and soft. However, be prepared to hit low shots that stay out of the wind, which will have you playing bump and runs instead of trying to throw darts at the pin location. The day I played, I was battling about 20+ mph winds. And in the summer, I was told these greens get really dried out and quick. The bunkers are kind of just dirt pits. I mistook one of them for a dirt cart path and drove right through it. Don't worry, I went back and raked...
I gave 5 stars for value since I got a GolfNow hot deal ($33), but I might have trouble paying the full $82 to play here.
The course layout is challenging but manageable. I played with 2 other guys, and thankfully one of them plays Sea Ranch a few times a year. If you're playing here for the first time without someone with local knowledge, be sure to grab the layout book from the pro shop. After I finished 18, I went back and played the front 9 again. After shooting +11 the first time on the front (ouch), I shot +2 on the second go-around. Course knowledge helps!!!

Not a ton of options for food in the pro shop, but I got a hot dog and 2 light beers for $10.
Oh, and you will definitely see more deer than people.
