Jacksonville Beach Golf Club
Played On 03/04/2019Slow pace of play & Fivesomes
When I review a course, I try to take into account the overall experience. Jacksonville Beach hit the mark with the re-model, good conditioning, and excellent greens. If reviews were solely based on the the course itself, this would be a four star review.
However, the pace of play ruined the experience and in my opinion is what is wrong with the game of golf right now. Tee time was 11a on a Monday. 5 hour round of golf, and it was the group in front of us, which was a fivesome, holding up the course.
After waiting for many minutes for each shot, we finally made the turn at 2.5 hours. We asked if we could play through on #10, and the group denied our request. We asked the ranger if he could help us out, and he would not and mentioned they were on pace.
We finally finished the round at 4p. A five hour round, and the course staff not willing to help enforce a decent pace of play.
It's difficult to recommend a good course when the staff doesn't recognize that a 5 hour round isn't acceptable.
Really like the course remodel though!
Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines Resort
Played On 01/02/2017Stern Test of Golf
The course was excellent with amazing conditioning. It is one of Pete Dye's first designs. It will test every aspect of your game, placing a premium on ball striking, accuracy, and short game. The fairways are narrow, surround by beautiful low-country trees. The greens are small typically surrounded by very strategic bunkering.
Probably the best collection of par 3's I've ever played. One of the arguments I've read is that all the par 3s play about the same distance. Not on the day I played. I hit wedge, 9 iron, 7 iron, and 6 iron into each par 3. Absolutely spectacular.
To me, the only drawback is that the course plays through a condo/housing development with several intersecting roads. The houses really don't come into play, but in my opinion, the layout would feel much more spectacular.
Highly recommend the course to test your game and experience a course with great PGA Tour history.
The new clubhouse is magnificent and some of the best staff I've experienced. If you go here, it is much better to walk as it is flat.
Sweetens Cove Golf Club
Played On 10/17/2016The most fun you will have on a golf course
This is the most fun you will ever have on the golf course!
The course conditioning was perfect, playing firm and fast similar to Irish links. And what can I say about the greens beside WOW! The strategic contouring allows for many creative shots to be played into, and on the greens. The greens are wildly entertaining, similar to the famous Tom Doak designed green complexes at Ballyneal. An absolute design genius by Rob Collins...kudos! This is the most fun you will ever have putting.
The course is perfectly conditioned, with fabulous scenery. It's almost like your playing an ocean side course, but better and at the foothills of the mountains.
Great layout, fair course, amazing scenery, and just a pleasure to play. If I lived local, Sweetens Cove would instantaneously have one more member. Please do yourself a favor and play this course as soon as possible, it is a once in a lifetime experience. Also an enjoyable walk.
TPC Myrtle Beach
Played On 04/05/2016Amazing staff paired with a fantastic course
The staff friendliness made the entire experience. From the time you pull up, the gentlemen who take your bags welcomes you with open arms. The gentlemen working the pro shop was super friendly. Lastly, the starters and on-course staff were amazing. I have played over 200 courses, and this is the best staff experience I have ever had. They make the experience special.
The course is scenic with very little housing. The holes are challenging enough to make it fun, but not overly difficult. I will definitely be back to play here, tops in Myrtle beach. Great work on keeping perfect conditioning .
The Amelia River Club
Played On 10/28/2015Tops in Amelia Island
The course is beautiful with no homes! A low country layout with a strong mix of tight tree lined fairways and open links style holes. We played from the tips, and the course was deceptively difficult. Not too difficult, but a fun challenge of golf. With the exception of Long Point, I have played every course on Amelia Island, and this is my favorite. Reminds me of the Private Golf Club of Amelia Island, but better at 30% the cost.
Conditioning was top notch with fast greens, and well manicured fairways and tee boxes.
Highly recommend the course. Amelia River and Oak Marsh are my favorites on the island.
Thank you Anthony for your review of Amelia River Golf Club. We appreciate you taking the time and are so glad you had such an enjoyable experience with usl Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you while you are here and please come back and visit us again soon!
Dormie Club
Played On 09/07/2015Amazing Round of Golf
Could it get any better? Being the first tee time at the Dormie Club, and walking 18 secluded holes of golf. Amazing! We felt like we were there only ones on the the course in the wilderness. The summer rate was $80, and the experience was so good, anything up to $200 would be a good value.
The greens were in pristine condition and rolled true and fast. There was some reviews from a few months ago that mentioned the greens were in not such good condition. They have since recovered.
The course itself reminded me of a slightly less diabolical version of Streamsong. I have played several courses in the Pinehurst Area (I have never played No. 2). I would recommend the following as must plays:
1. The Dormie Club
2. Tobacco Road
3. Pinehurst No. 8
4. Pinehurst No. 4
Great experience, conditioning, and staff. A must play...be sure to get here before the place goes private as planned.
Secession Golf Club
Played On 05/24/2015Stunning Low Country Course
Talk about a pristine course in a beautiful setting. The most spectacular low country layout I have ever seen. It is truly something special to have the opportunity to play here. Golf as it was meant to be played: no houses, peaceful, natural and walking only.
If you have the opportunity to ever play this course, do not pass it up!
Indian Wells Golf Resort - Celebrity Course
Played On 05/09/2015Great Golf Course
This course was amazing. Played the Celebrity in the morning then Mission Hills Gary Player in the afternoon. The two should not even be mentioned in the same sentence. Celebrity is head and shoulders better. Perhaps the best scenery you'll get in the Valley. If you're visiting Palm Springs this needs to be a must play on your list!
Mission Hills - Gary Player Course
Played On 05/09/2015Boring Layout, but good conditioning
Let me start by saying everything is excellent at this course except the layout. I have no idea this course gets such high ratings. First, the good:
Staff Friendliness: Awesome and welcoming, very attentive consistent with Troon facilities
Course Conditioning: Good, the tee boxes were good, the fairways were firm and fast, and the greens were true and smooth. Bunkers were also in good condition.
Here's the deal on the course. Every hole feels like the same over and over again. Straight away par 4 about 400yds in length without hardly any doglegs or challenge. Very very monotonous and boring. It's built in a residential community with houses borderline infringing on the golf course. Several holes also play along a highway. There is no solicitude or character to the course. Very bland. The par 3's are pretty good and scenic, but it ends there. The greens have zero undulation, but are small which adds some challenge.
I would recommend this course to beginners, or someone who wants to score well on an excellent conditioned course with fantastic staff. If you are looking for beautiful scenery, solicitude, or even a remotely challenging round, this course is nor for you. Feels like a typical Florida course built in a community.
Dear Anthony9184196,
I first want to thank you for your kind review of our staff and course conditioning. We do work hard to accomplish high standards.
As far as the course layout, you might give our Pete Dye track a try next time. It will definitely test you a little more than the Gary Player.
Again, thank you for playing and we look forward to seeing you again!

Bear Creek Golf Club
Played On 03/05/2015Nice Reese Jones Layout
First, the course is private, but has recently opened up a few public tee times to raise funds. If you like Reese Jones designs, the course is spectacular. Mostly tight fairways with dog legs in both directions including strategic fairway bunkering. Now to the greens....absolutely outstanding. Roll true and fast . Some of the best I've seen on the island.
Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I showed up an hour before my tee time, and the starter got me out immediately with two members. Both members were great guys and I thoroughly enjoyed my round. Excellent scenery with most of the housing set off in the background behind the tall trees. Would highly recommend if you're in the area.
Bella Collina Golf Club
Played On 03/03/2015Great course, extremely slow play
First, there is only on negative thing I have to say. The pace of play was extremely slow. 5 hours on a late Tuesday morning. To be fair, the starter warned us that it was slow.
On to the course. Perfect conditioning, fast greens, and an absolute challenge. I loved the course. It makes you think and plan out your game.
Atypical of Florida courses, there is quite a bit of elevation change and no homes! Amazing! With the atmosphere you truly feel like you're in the middle of the Italian country side. reminds me of vinaterra in eastern Virginia. Highly recommend playing. Bring your A game.
Clubhouse is great, staff is great!
We thank you for joining us out here at Bella Collina! We apologize for the slower pace of play on the day, and we will strive to make that better for the future if you come to play with us again!
Crooked Cat at Orange County National
Played On 01/15/2015Rare Heatland style gem in Florida
What a rare heathland style design in Florida! Large fairways with quite a bit of elevation change. Great course, meticulously conditioned. You feel like you are in the middle of Scottland while on the course. Can't wait to try the Panther course. Highly recommend.
Bay Hill Club & Lodge - Championship Course
Played On 01/13/2015Great test of golf
Truly a great test of golf. Once you play the course, it easy to see why the PGA tour stops here year after year. Tee to green, the conditioning was absolute perfection including greens that run fast and true.
There's nothing tricked up about the course, what you see is what you get. The design will make you think. Strategic bunker placements coupled with water on many of the holes makes the course challenging.
Every staff member pleasantly greeted us as if we were long time members. If you have the chance to Bay Hill, do not pass it up. Your game and strategy will be challenged in every way.
Omni Amelia Island Resort - Oak Marsh
Played On 11/28/2014Beautiful, Classic Pete Dye
This course is amazing! Classic early Pete Dye at his finest. He designed this course shortly after Harbour Town, and there are strikingly similar characteristics.
Design is phenomenal. Conditioning is fantastic. If you're at the resort, unless you're dead set on playing golf with an ocean view, this course is far superior. Scenery just as good as the Ocean Course. Mush better test of golf and design.
The Club at Savannah Harbor
Played On 11/13/2014Perfectly manicured scenic course
What a golf course! I've been playing here about twice a year for the past five years, and every year it gets better and better. Course was cart path only today due to over seeding, but I actually enjoyed it more because I slowed down to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Great views of the historic city, bridge, and marsh.
Greens were perfect, true, and rolled fast (10-12 is my estimation). Beautiful winding fairways through the marsh and trees. Course is fairly wide open off the tees. Hands down the best public access course in Savannah. If you have the chance, this is a must play.
St. Johns Golf & Country Club
Played On 10/09/2014Wow the greens!
The course is immaculate. One of the few public courses you get the superb conditioning of a private course. Greens are perfect and roll fast and true year round. I've played this course many of times, and the marshals do an excellent job keeping the play moving. I've never had a round longer than 4hrs 15min. Most rounds take less than 4 hours. The course gets lots of play, so be sure to book your tee times early.
Omni Amelia Island Resort - Ocean Links
Played On 06/21/2014Tricked up Ocean Course
I played here last year, and came to the conclusion that once was enough. I had a family member from the North visit, and he was eager to play Ocean front holes. So, I made another trip to the Ocean course thinking it would be better. Here's my assessment:
Design: Tricked up. Small, elevated greens. Very tight fairways. To me, the ocean holes have great views, but seem unnatural and fabricated. I can say the views are outstanding though.
Conditioning: Barely average, not what you would expect for paying this high of a greens fee.
In my opinion, if you want to see the ocean play this course. If you want a good true test of golf with better conditions play Oak Marsh. The scenery at Oak Marsh is just as good (marsh views as opposed to Ocean). The ocean course is poorly designed, and awkwardly routed.
Magnolia Point Golf & Country Club
Played On 03/03/2014Excellent conditioning
The course was a surprisingly great value at $25 for lunch, range, and golf. The course conditioning was excellent. I enjoyed the layout, especially the elevation change. Although the course is in a residential community, it is not surrounded by houses which was nice. Many of the holes feel secluded. I consider this one of the best values in Jacksonville.
Course:
Fairways: in great shape especially given all the recent rain
Greens: excellent condition, very green and hardly any ball marks
Bunkers: meticulously maintained
Tee boxes: good
I teed off at 730a on a Monday morning as a single and finished in 3hrs. Beware on Mondays at 9a there is a shot gun start league. I played the first 15 holes in 2hrs then got caught behind the league the last 3 holes (took an hour to play the last 3 holes).
The Golf Club at North Hampton
Played On 11/30/2013Great layout
Fantastic, challenging layout. You will use every club in your bag. Conditioning is always great. In my opinion best public course in greater Jacksonville area.
I feel like you're my long lost twin. Same problems on the Austin munis and drives me nuts. They allow fivesomes and I don't know what the rangers are doing out there. Unreal. Glad the reno went well though.
