Nobleton Lakes Golf Club - Lakes/View
Played On 09/10/2017If not for the pace of play on the front 9
We played Lakes and Views. Interesting mix of holes where course knowledge would help on some of the green approach shots. Greens rolled true, had good pace, and many breaks. Long putts are not friendly on these greens given the swales which can make being on the wrong side of the hole very punishing.
While we were a twosome, unfortunately the foursome ahead of us lost contact with the foursome in front of them by the 4th hole and were over a hole behind by the 6th which made for a long front 9. To be fair, the course marshal sent them to the Woods nine for their back such we played the back in a very respectable hour 45 minutes in spite of catching up to a foursome. But that is the risk of public courses.
Withington Golf Club
Played On 06/18/2017Classic Parkland Golf Course
This was a last minute decision after playing links seaside courses all week. Close to the Manchester airport was what brought it to our attention. This is a classic parkland style golf course with fairways well defined by trees, a few well placed bunkers, and limited water in play. What you see is what you get and that is not a bad thing. Course conditions were good and pace OK even though there was not heavy play that day what play there was slightly on the slow side for my liking.
Lakeview Golf Course
Played On 05/13/2017Great old style course
The course was in great shape and for a Saturday morning tee time was fairly quiet. As a result pace of play was great with no waiting nor having a group right behind us. While the course has a couple of quirky holes it is a great old parkland golf course that the city keeps well maintained.
Greens need help
Lack of rain has hurt this course which is extremely evident on the greens. These were the worse I saw in the region during my week of golf. Lots of sand due to dead patches. Which is a shame because it is a great layout and while firm and fast due to the weather very playable except for the greens. At this point it would appear more than just rain will be needed to get the greens back to what I have seen in the past.
Arrowhead Golf Course
Played On 03/20/2017A Nice Challenge
Course was playing firm and fast reflective of the recent weather. Such rough not very punishing but greens were in good shape, rolled smooth and fast, but approach shots held. The major challenge is navigating and avoiding the water that is in play on a majority of holes for any misplaced shots. Water will also influence approach shots on most of the par 5 where it pinches in as you get closer to the green so some course management is a definite must.
First time playing this course but I would return as an enjoyable layout.
Mirror Lakes Golf Club
Played On 01/26/2017A volume golf course
This course only survives with volume rounds given the low pricing. Conditions OK. Greens small but we're firm and fast. Fairways lacking TLC.
If looking for an inexpensive round on a forgiving golf course this may be your choice but keep in mind the low pricing attracts a lot of value I.e. Cheap golfers.
Rivers Edge Golf Club
Played On 09/06/2016Worth the drive to Shallotte
This is a great track with a wonderful variety of holes that will challenge all levels of golfers. The ninth will leave you muttering but the balance of the holes are a mix of holes where you can get selectively get aggressive and score well.
Willow Valley Golf Course
Played On 10/05/2014When the wind is up, look out!
It was extremely windy (2 to 3 clubs against the wind) and cold. As long as you kept the ball out of the fescue it can be somewhat forgiving. Anything into the fescue is gone as it is deep and thick. Despite a lot of rain in the prior 24 hours the course was playable and is a good test of golf with a lot of variety in holes.
Dragon's Fire Golf Club
Played On 10/01/2014Hit them straight
Long and straight always works on any course but especially true here where there is always trouble off the tee right and left. Course management is also important as there are different ways of playing many of the holes depending on the strengths in your game especially on the par 5's.
Hidden Lake Golf Club - Old Course
Played On 08/02/2014Straight forward
This is a straight forward course and while not overly difficult it is pleasant to play. The back 9 is more interesting than the front 9. It is an excellent "couples" course as it is very friendly for the short hitters playing from the correct tees.
Little River Golf & Resort
Played On 8/17/2013Nice variety of holes
On a wet and rainy day the course conditions held up very well. The opening 9 is fairly open and forgiving allowing you an opportunity to get your game in shape while the back 9 is much tighter and requires some good course management. A good husband and wife course with the men able to go,back and make it a good test while the ladies can move up and have an enjoyable day.
Carlisle Golf and Country Club - East/South
Played On 8/3/2013Fore is a common phrase
Played the north and east courses which are quite different in style. North much tighter but both courses not a lot of separation between holes so fore is heard on a regular basis from adjoining holes. Each of the nines have some quirky holes that take away from the overall experience. East plays much shorter than north but both courses emphasize accuracy versus length. Pace for a weekend round was very good but would not rush back to play.
Legends on the Niagara Golf Course - Battlefield
Played On 7/21/2013A Fair Test
The course is relatively flat and relies on fescue, strategically placed bunkers, and Usshers Creek to keep you honest. It is a good test with many holes offerring the long hitter rewards if up to the challenge of taking the short route from the tee while giving everyone else an alternative option. Greens have subtle breaks that can cause consternation. Course had taken a lot of rain recently and many bunkers were either unplayable or still ponds with no maintenance occurring which was somewhat surprising.
Indian Wells Golf Club
Played On 7/7/2013Opportunities to score well
This is a course that plays against the escarpment so you need to keep that in mind when on the greens. There are opportunities to score well on this course but you do need to choose wisely where to be aggressive and where to play wisely. Good mix of holes and topography makes for an enjoyable round.
Verde River Golf & Social Club
Played On 5/9/2013True desert course experience
If your definition of desert golf is just you, the golf course, and desert with nothing else around then this is your course. Interesting layout with topography changes, good mix of challenging holes, and you cannot beat the price. If you want the bells and whistles of a club house then do not come here as it does not exist. But if you are looking for a great day of golf then put this on your list.
Lowville Golf Club
Played On 4/7/2013Course wintered well but...
The course has wintered well and the greens were in great shape. Unfortunately, the course is still a work in progress from the construction of the reservoir such the 14th hole is under construction and 18 is now played as a par 3 from the 150 yd marker. The course is offering unlimited play in recognition of the above so for an early spring tune up where the goal is just to play it is not a bad option.
Oak Creek Golf Club
Played On 3/12/2013Not as easy as it looks
This is a very seductive golf course. While it looks quite open from the tee get in the wrong place and your approach to the green increases in difficulty. If you hit it straight and long no worries, otherwise danger lurks whether it is sand, water, or just plain yuck. Fairways were dry and firm reflective of lack of rain but greens were well maintained and rolled true and quick. This was a very enjoyable round of golf.
MetroWest Golf Club
Played On 2/23/2013Solid layout
Forgiving off the tee, not forgiving around the greens. Elevated greens well bunkered and generally small targets are the teeth of this course. Bring a solid short game and you can score.
